[English version]

[Display] Switching from four to two wheels one day a week can cut your traffic emissions by 67%. And as if that wasn't reason enough, studies have shown that e-bike riders get just as much physical activity as people who ride a regular bike. So if you're looking for an e-bike that gives you a smooth and effortless ride, but also makes a welcome change to your commute, then read on.

The e-bike that perfects the art of commuting: The VanMoof S5 & A5!

VanMoof is a Dutch company founded in 2009 by brothers Taco and Ties Carlier with the aim of creating the perfect e-bike for the city. And 13 years later, their latest generation is - the VanMoof S5 & A5 - a combination of unique VanMoof tech features that focus on the needs of the driver

let's dive in

The VanMoof S5 and A5 come in two sleek colors, Light Gray and Dark Gray. At first glance the S5 is a continuation of the classic VanMoof straight frame design, the standover height is measured at 820mm and is best suited for riders who are between 165 and 210cm, while the A5 is 622mm and is best suited for riders who are 155cm-200cm. Both bikes have integrated batteries. The charging time is 6 ½ hours for a 100% charge and 2 ½ hours for a 50% charge. Although they differ in frame shape, both bikes are outfitted with the same tech that will have you finding any excuse to run an errand on the bike.

Let's start with what interests everyone the most. The range. Both the S5 and A5 have a long-range battery. The S5 has a range of 150km, while the A5 has a range of 140km (depending on which Power Assist level you're driving). That means you'll have enough juice to drive the long way home - and then a little more.

The VanMoof The S5 and A5 feature a 250W motor and four levels of assistance, allowing the rider to decide which is best for him/her. The top speed of the VanMoof S5 and A5 is limited to 25 km in the EU and UK, 32 km in the US and 24 km in Japan to comply with local regulations.

Halo rings on both sides of the handlebar

Unlike the previous model, VanMoof has replaced the matrix display with halo rings placed on either side of the handlebars. The left halo ring shows how much battery is left, while the right ring shows speed and assist level.

An VanMoof is 80% designed and manufactured in-house, with the 5 Series alone incorporating 231 new, purpose designed parts. The favorite among VanMoof drivers? The Turbo Boost button. When the Turbo Boost is pressed, the maximum torque of the engine is achieved. This gives you an instant burst of acceleration, which comes in handy when negotiating hills, crossing intersections and passing traffic lights. And to be honest - it's quite addicting.

We've already talked about our favorite button on one side of the handlebar - but what's on the other side? Well, that's where you'll find the button for the electric bell. You can choose from three ringtones via the VanMoof app to ensure you can alert pedestrians and other road users when needed.

In terms of shifting, both bikes are equipped with a custom-built Gen 5 E-Shifter, which consists of three gears and works in harmony with the motor and torque sensor to give the rider a smooth and quiet ride. The only thing you need to focus on is where you're going next. And if you're one of those riders who puts safety first, VanMoof has developed a custom Kick Lock. The Gen 5 Kick Lock is a button that sits in the rear wheel - once pushed, it locks the bike and turns on the bike alarm. You don't want to be a bike thief anywhere near a VanMoof bike.

Known for integrated front and rear lights

VanMoof bikes are known for their integrated front and rear lights, and the 5 Series is also equipped so you don't have to worry about forgetting your bike light. The integrated lights of the Gen 5 series are ISO 6742-1 certified for the EU and the UK and are additionally certified with the K mark for Germany.

VanMoof has set the standard when it comes to e-bike testing. The bikes are held in custom built test chambers to ensure they stand up to any urban landscape they might be ridden in. But what about the app features that accompany your ride? Well, you can unlock your bike via the app, change motor support, adjust your gear settings and track your rides via the "My Rides" feature. If you want to see your stats in real time, you can attach your phone to the handlebars using the phone holder. All you need is an SP Connect phone case.

  1. Tuning / or repair blog seems to be suitable for the VanMoof, which if you can trust users (very, very numerous) should better be called NoMove. Your report almost encouraged me to get a VM... thank God I found out about it somewhere else.
You should also do this before you hype things

    • Hi Harry

we didn't "hype" anything because, as you can see from the article, it's an "advertisement". So a paid article.
