The standard EN 1522 applies, it defines the classes B1 to B7. The bulletproof glass according to EN 1063 has the classes BR1 to BR 7. The entire vehicle receives certification between VR1 and VR10, where VR stands for "Vehicle Resistance". The vehicles should withstand bombardment and attacks with explosives, crowbars, axes and incendiary bombs.
Who drives armored vehicles?
Above all, the highest resistance classes VR7 to VR10 use politicians, but increasingly private individuals - primarily entrepreneurs - order armored vehicles. Such a vehicle can, contrary to rumors contrary to anyone purchase, it is also needed. The manufacturers keep the production figures and the details of the armor secret. There are certainly armored vehicles that are stronger than the standard highest resistance class, including the official car of the US president. It should exceed the protection class VR10, its discs are according to expert estimates 14 cm thick.
The most represented brands among the armored vehicles are Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Audi and Land Rover. The prices on the used car market start at around 20.000 Euro, but larger and newer vehicles with a very high resistance class can easily cost around 600.000 Euro and more. Incidentally, politicians have very different preferences regarding the brand of their armored vehicle, as the example of the last German Chancellor shows. Helmut Kohl swore by the Mercedes S-Class, his successor Gerhard Schröder and his successor Angela Merkel, however, on the armored Audi A8 and in the case of Angela Merkel on the VW Phaeton.
