Not just a compliment - hardware store tuning at the car

From hardware store tuning (also called lint tuning) occasionally the beginners talk about tuning. The term is self-explanatory in principle. There are parts from the hardware store or vehicle market used for tuning, which is of course always cheap, but often no longer delivers as dummies.

Where did the term "hardware store tuning" come from?

Construction or vehicle markets also carry so-called tuning parts in their range of accessories. The same parts are available at a well-known, inexpensive workshop chain or even at filling stations, which is why synonymous sometimes synonymous of the "gas station tuning" or even "cheap tuning" is spoken. These parts are right next to the classic car accessories. Hard-core tuning fans with some experience, however, usually refrain from this and prefer to go to the tuning workshop. The reason: These components are very often functionless imitations or cheap dummies of known tuning parts. Examples include racing gas cap and air scoop for sticking, as well as there are exhaust baffles for a seemingly larger tailpipe diameter.

Popular hardware store tuning parts

Tribal stickers and model names of sports versions are popular. So-called “M” stickers were found on many vehicles for a long time, some of them even came from other brands. However, the trend is downward. This could be due to falling demand or legal difficulties. Hardware store rims are also used again and again, but most of the time they don't come close to the look and quality of real tuning rims. However, there are a few notable exceptions in this area. Extreme DIY store tuning relies on PU foam & Co., so building materials are misused to individualize the vehicle. The result of the tinkering with PU foam, wooden strips or silicone can of course be clearly recognized as such.

nothing that does not exist

It looks ugly to ridiculous, and the hobbyists may endanger their own safety or that of other road users because the glued parts no longer hold on to the vehicle at higher speeds or vibrations. It is a very amateurish tuning, which one can only advise against. The hobbyists would like to spice up their car, but they lack the money for proper tuning. After experimenting in this way for a while, they usually see the futility of the endeavor and go to a tuning workshop. Still, we don't want to completely condemn hardware store tuning. Some parts, for example from the area of maintenance & repair, interior fittings or even car electrics, definitely serve their purpose. You can also buy a brake caliper paint from the brand manufacturer. Stay away from the Turbo Whistler (see video) who likes to have a sound tailpipe or exhaust pipe scolds and other scrap.

However, we would like to delimit the term "Fusseltuning". Because that means creating individual cars with as little money as possible. Not necessarily perfect in the finish, but skilfully and cheaply implementing a very own idea. An individual painting of the rims using spray film could also be referred to as lint tuning. You can say the car is fuzzy and that can drag on for years.

Of course that had not happened yet!
