Because every gram counts - Makrolon discs for the car

In motorsport, every gram counts. And glass is heavy. For this reason, the side and rear windows of a race car are replaced by Makrolon. Makrolon is a thermoplastic, called polycarbonate. They have a high breaking strength and are around 40 percent lighter than the classic glass panes. In addition, Makrolon offers good dimensional stability even at high temperatures. A great way to give your car a touch of racing.

How do you proceed?

First you should find out what the consequences of changing the standard glass panes with Makrolon are. After installing the Makrolon windows, the window regulator can usually no longer be used - the window must remain closed forever. A small sliding window is therefore often built into the driver's window to let some fresh air into the car. Some providers offer pre-cut Makrolon windows for your vehicle. If not, you should order Makrolon sheets online that are at least three millimeters thick. You can cut these according to your own wishes and ideas. You might even find templates and dimensions for your vehicle. In general, however, replacing all panes with Makrolon is not cheap. Also important: The windscreen should be made of glass! This is prescribed both in the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) as well as in all regulations from racing. There are exceptions, but they cost a lot of money.

What should you pay attention to?

Macrolone discs are more sensitive than glass. Especially when cleaning you should be careful not to use aggressive cleaning agents. You can attack the plastic and make it milky. In addition, Makrolon scratched easier than glass. In the daily use of the car, you should make sure that the Makrolon discs are not a disadvantage. Especially with the rear window, you should make sure to be able to dissipate a possible overpressure in the vehicle through small holes. Because the sliding window on the driver's side is open when driving, air flows into the interior. This dynamic pressure can even push out the lightweight Makrolon disc in extreme cases. You find that installing and using Makrolon discs is not easy. If you follow the tips and pay attention to every detail, the use of these polycarbonate lenses is a great and effective eye-catcher for your car. So you ensure a real racing look!

I want to tune my car and, above all, make it lighter. During my research, I came across Makrolon windows. Good to know that the windshield has to be made of normal glass. I found further information here: kunststoff-pries.de
