The air pressure at a glance with a tire pressure control system

While most new cars are factory-fitted with a tire pressure monitoring system, many owners of older cars would also like to use this function. But what advantages does such a system offer? In order to avoid accidents or unsafe driving behavior of the car caused by incorrect tire pressure, the tire pressure can be checked with a so-called Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) The tire is one of the most important aspects of safety at all. Too little tire pressure leads to a longer braking distance and a much more unstable driving behavior, especially in corners. A safety-related pressure drop can then be detected quickly and easily with tire pressure monitoring.

also the tire temperature is measurable

Correct tire pressure also contributes to driving comfort and optimal consumption behavior: even a tire pressure that is only slightly too low can significantly increase the vehicle's consumption. Continuous monitoring of tire pressure is not only useful, it is also a cost factor and can help to reduce consumption and save money at the same time. In addition, unnecessarily high consumption also means a higher environmental impact. In the case of off-road vehicles, the tire pressure monitoring system can also be combined with a tire pressure control system; However, this means a considerable additional technical effort. However, if the tire is not damaged, the air can be raised to the correct level again at the push of a button. There is also the possibility to measure the temperature of the tire. This can also be an advantage, depending on the area of application. There are systems here that contain both functions or only one. In the end, the decisive factor is almost always the price.

What options for retrofitting are there?

The air pressure at a glance with a tire pressure control system

On the one hand, the ABS / ESP system can be used to check the tire pressure. The system measures the speed of all wheels individually. Minimal speed differences then indicate a different wheel circumference. The wheel circumference can be reduced on a tire with a lower pressure, so the system then detects a lower tire pressure without measuring the pressure directly. This system can be retrofitted electronically, but access to the ABS or ESP sensors must be possible. The disadvantage is that this system cannot detect a loss of pressure in all four tires at the same time. On the other hand, there is the possibility of direct measurement. To do this, external sensors for pressure measurement are screwed onto the valve caps. The pressure of each individual wheel can then be measured and transmitted to a display in the cockpit. Depending on the quality of the device used, this measurement is very precise, very reliable and radio-based, for example via Bluetooth. By the way, there is more information about retrofitting the tire pressure monitor HERE.

the price often determines the accuracy of the measurement

The measurement accuracy is once again a question of price. The advantage of the external sensors is the simple, quick and uncomplicated installation on the valve. There are also the variants of the internal sensors (Here exist different types, among other things as pressure sensor in the rim tape), but these can only be safely installed by qualified personnel. It goes without saying that you must always proceed in a competent manner during assembly and avoid interfering with the safety of the tire. A disadvantage of radio-based systems is that the radio signals from the sensors are unencrypted and can therefore also be read by third parties and, in the worst case, even manipulated. Although this is not a real security hole, it should not go unmentioned.

Retrofitting also possible for the layman

A very interesting report, but I would like to mention that it always makes sense to prefer built-in sensors to the solution with the valve caps.
    Why?
As far as the temperature is concerned, the sensors are more accurate because they are not cooled in the airstream, or has someone burned their fingers when unscrewing the valve cap?
In order to function, the sensors have to operate the valve insert, which bypasses its function of keeping the air in the tire, i.e. only the seal in the valve cap keeps the air in the tire, which makes the system more dangerous.
When used with rubber valves, this is pressed outwards as the wheel speed increases (centrifugal force), which puts excessive strain on it and, in extreme cases, can tear, the consequences can be fatal!

With internal sensors you do not have these disadvantages, there is only a higher assembly effort, which should not cost more than 50 EUR, in the course of a tire assembly it should be significantly cheaper, because then only a little additional effort arises, the valve is removed from every conscientious fitter renewed anyway.

The TPMS is a great device. This can be very beneficial, especially for people who go on vacation by car with a lot of luggage. Because the tire pressure usually has to be increased. Having a device that does this automatically is great.
