Exhaust manifold from the car leaking / defective? The info!

The exhaust manifold is part of the exhaust system of the combustion engine. The exhaust manifold is located directly on the engine and has the task of directing the exhaust gases flowing out of the cylinder via other components. This is done using components like the Exhaust gas turbocharger and Flexible pipe, which lead the exhaust gases to the front, middle and rear silencers. The exhaust manifold can leak as a result of overheating, design errors, age-related wear or incorrect assembly. This can lead to exhaust gases escaping. And that causes this unfiltered before Catalyst escape, which represents an increased burden on the environment and which can also cause health hazards for the vehicle occupants. The reason for this is that the sucked-in exhaust gases may get into the interior via the ventilation.

Danger from hot exhaust gases!

If there is a larger leak, there is also a risk that the hot exhaust gases can cause major damage to hoses, wiring and lines. A vehicle fire worst case scenario can be the result. If there is only a minimal leak in the exhaust manifold, it is up to the TÜV inspector to decide whether the vehicle Main inspection exists or not. If this is the case, there may only be an indication of the leak. In the case of larger leaks, however, the vehicle fails.

Exhaust manifold of great importance

Many do not know what the task of the exhaust manifold is and how important it is for the correct functioning of the vehicle. The task of the exhaust manifold is to bring together the exhaust gases flowing out of the engine cylinders and forward them to the downstream components of the exhaust system. The exhaust manifold is usually combined with the exhaust turbocharger. In terms of stress, an exhaust manifold with an exhaust gas turbocharger must be able to withstand temperatures of over 900 °C as well as high loads and speeds. That's why it makes sense to drive a few kilometers in the partial load range after longer journeys under full load. This allows the components to cool down.

Repair Options and Effort

As part of car maintenance, a so-called visual inspection of the exhaust manifold takes place. If the specialist notices black spots, then this is an indication of a leak. Other causes must first be ruled out before the exhaust manifold is replaced. If you cannot avoid replacing the exhaust manifold, new parts and used parts can be used. With the used parts, however, it must be ensured that they are tight. Steel exhaust manifolds can also be post-welded under certain circumstances. However, this option is out of the question for exhaust manifolds made of gray cast iron.

The cost of repairing or replacing the exhaust manifold depends on the vehicle model. Depending on the design, the removal and installation of the exhaust manifold vary enormously. Sometimes the whole engine has to come out for the change. Between 2 and 25 hours can easily come together. Unforeseeable problems not included. Gaskets and nuts as well as the studs should also be replaced when replacing the exhaust manifold. A certain sequence and a certain torque must also be observed when tightening during installation. In some cases, special tools are even required.

The following note is essential: For safety reasons, tuningblog recommends all repair, inspection and maintenance work exclusively to be carried out in a specialist workshop! Although our information is summarized to the best of our knowledge and belief, we cannot assume any liability for the content. All information is therefore "without guarantee".

Of course, that wasn't the end of it!

In this tuningblog category there are guides and instructions for common defects/repairs on the vehicle and for installing accessories/tuning parts. Our articles explain in a simple way common defects and the corresponding repairs and they also explain how the first signs of a defect become noticeable. In most cases, we also have initial clues to the repair instructions in our repair instructions approximate costs listed. The goal of ourAuto Repair Guide“ is to create a head start in knowledge for the next visit to the workshop with initial tips. This may save you from tedious troubleshooting and you may even be able to do small things yourself. The same applies, of course, to the installation of accessories/tuning parts. Here, too, we would like to help with the implementation with instructions and tips. There are many other posts on this as well. Below is an excerpt of the last and HERE there are all previous instructions.
