Resetting the electronic parking brake (EPB): this is how it works!

The electronic parking brake was introduced in 2001 and has since found its way into a constantly growing number of vehicle models. Service: Close EPB

After replacing pads and/or discs, the service position of the EPB must be restored disabled and the parking brake via the diagnostics menu getting closed. The procedure here is analogous to the opening process of the EPB:

  • Switch on ignition

Via the menu item "Maintenance/work in progress etc." choose the braking system, then via "Close electronic parking brake or similar." move the servomotor back to the starting position on the brake calliper. Then the parking brake recalibrate – i.e. adjust the brake pistons to the new pads and/or discs so that the EPB works properly.

Finalize, recalibrate and exit EPB maintenance

With a diagnostic tool, the electronic parking brake can be quickly and easily (re)calibrated, opened and closed will. To do this, the "Maintenance/Service etc." menu is opened again in the diagnosis menu and the corresponding braking system is selected. Then via the sub-item "calibrate electronic parking brake“ start the automatic calibration. The system check then starts and, if necessary, information and/or possible errors are displayed. Again, an activated ignition is usually required for the duration of the calibration, but under no circumstances a running engine!

With a click on "next/continue etc.", the recalibration started. The parking brake servomotor can then be heard briefly and a few seconds later the calibration is complete. Clicking on "OK/complete etc." completes the process and the brakes have been serviced. As a final check, a new system check should be started. For this purpose, a new, last automatic diagnosis is carried out and attention is paid to error codes. If this final diagnosis runs smoothly, the diagnosis cable can be disconnected and the ignition turned off. The wheels are then remounted and the vehicle can be lowered.
