Energized: 1972er Type 2 Bus from EV West & VW

Volkswagen of America shows with an 1972er Type 2 bus, in cooperation with the company EV West (Specialists in converting to electric vehicles), which possibilities exist to use the e-Golf drivetrain for the conversion of classic VW models. And the result is impressive! After all, almost 200 kilometers far, the E-type 2 bus is to come with a single charge. This is made possible by a 35,8 kWh battery system that comes from the 2017er e-Golf (MK7). EV West has installed the drivetrain from the e-Golf at the rear of the e-bus, retiring the air-cooled 60-PS four-cylinder engine. And the position is optimal for the conversion. Thanks to independent suspension, the transverse drive of the drivetrain can be perfectly integrated. It is a unit that includes both the synchronous 100 kW AC permanent magnet electric motor, the single-step transmission and the charging system.

Visually, the conversion is almost standard. All the important features of the E-Bus remain unchanged and the connoisseur probably only the missing tailpipe of the exhaust system and the E-port under the fuel filler flap. And also in the cabin remains almost Everything is the same. The battery packs are packaged in reinforced and fireproof housings under the seats in front and in place of the fuel tank. And even the long classic shift lever is still visible, but now he controls the automatic with Park, reverse, neutral, and driving function. And even the regenerative braking modes (PRNDB) from the VW e-Golf have been installed in the bus. On the dashboard sits a classically designed digital EVGauge and to the right of the speedometer you have one Sun Super Tach Round Instrument installed.

Incidentally, the Type 2 Bus is not the first electrified Volkswagen. At the IAA 2019 (Thu, 12. Sept. 2019 - Sun., 22. Sept. 2019) you already had the VW E-Beetle with 82 PS E-UP drive presented to the world public. It was then built with the partner company eClassics from Renningen near Stuttgart and with 60 kW electric motor and 36,8 kWh lithium-ion battery similar strength. After other manufacturers like Jaguar (with the E-type Zero) Volkswagen has come up with Volkswagen Group Components (VWGC) to make the subsequent electrification of classic cars possible. Certainly a promising business! If we receive timely information on further changes to the Bulli-Bus, there is of course an update for this report.
