Volkswagen completes the range of its flagship Touareg with a new top model: the Touareg R. The 340 kW (462 hp) plug-in hybrid drive of the all-rounder offers an innovative symbiosis of superior performance and electrical efficiency. With a sufficiently charged battery, the new SUV always starts in purely electrical “E-mode” and is therefore emission-free. The battery capacity is designed so that the Touareg R can be driven electrically over the average daily distances of commuters. Like all Touaregs, the new R version is equipped with permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard. Thanks to 4MOTION and the powerful drive system (700 Nm torque), the Touareg R is also approved for maximum trailer loads of up to 3,5 tons. The high-end model also copes with this high trailer load in “e-mode”. As the world's first SUV plug-in hybrid model, the Touareg can also use the Trailer shunting assistants "Trailer Assist" can be equipped. Another novelty: For the first time there will be the Touareg with "Travel Assist"; the first-class Volkswagen can be driven at speeds of up to 250 km / h (automatic longitudinal and lateral guidance) as the first Volkswagen.

The new flagship was designed by the performance brand Volkswagen R - it traditionally develops the sportiest models in the Volkswagen portfolio. The Touareg R represents a paradigm shift: it is the first Volkswagen R model with a plug-in hybrid drive; At the same time, a hybrid model is taking over the position of the strongest Volkswagen for the first time. The exceptionally well-equipped Touareg R with the exterior design package "Black Style" as well as 20-inch alloy wheels ("Braga") and the "R-Line" interior world (including leather "Vienna" with crystal gray stitching) will be launched in 2020 in the second half of the year.

Intelligent e-performance.

With the Touareg R, the plug-in drive has entered the third European Volkswagen series after the Golf and Passat. The Touareg R is not only the first all-wheel drive model in the Volkswagen PHEV range, but also another milestone in the course of the reorganization of Volkswagen R that started in 2019. Jost Capito, Managing Director of the Group's own performance brand: “We are building the range of Volkswagen Rs currently with emphasis. After the compact CUV models T-Roc R1 and T-Roc Cabriolet R-Line2, Volkswagen R is introducing the Touareg R in a very short time, another sport utility vehicle that offers its own positioning and incomparable charisma. “The Touareg R stands for new, intelligent e-performance in the large travel SUV segment.

Authentic, avant-garde, suitable for everyday use.

Volkswagen R is responsible for the optical and technical configuration and thus also for the conceptual alignment of the new model. The Touareg R itself is based on the third generation of the series first introduced in 2018, which was presented in 2002. All current Touaregs offer a dynamic and elegant design, maximum safety and long-distance comfort, state-of-the-art connectivity and an extensively digitized cockpit. The overall concept is also designed for a high level of suitability for everyday use. Around 60 percent of all Touareg owners in Germany and 40 percent in Europe also use the SUV as a towing vehicle - strikingly high figures.

The Touareg is driven particularly often by people who are active in sport and who value maximum safety, the best driving comfort, intuitive operation and optimal connectivity. The new Touareg R was designed for the technically particularly affine group of this clientele. For the first time, you will receive a performance model that can be temporarily driven electrically and therefore locally without any emissions. The new Touareg R meets the Euro 6d-TEMP-EVAP-ISC emissions standard.

Drive range expanded.

The SUV series is currently available with one turbo gasoline (TSI) and three turbo diesel engines (TDI). The V6 TSI develops an output of 250 kW (340 hp) 3. As the V6 TDI, the Touareg is available in two power levels: 170 kW (231 hp) 4 and 210 kW (286 hp) 5. The currently most powerful Touareg is a V8 TDI with 310 kW (421 hp) 6. With the new Touareg R, Volkswagen is expanding this range upwards.

Maximum R dynamics.

As a typical Volkswagen R model, the Touareg R offers maximum dynamism. The driver can call up the full power of the electric motor (100 kW / 136 hp) and the V6 turbo gasoline engine (250 kW / 340 hp) and a boost function almost at the push of a button - can be called up using the electric or accelerator pedal unite in order to bundle the vehicle's dynamic reserves - for example when overtaking quickly and thus safely - and to utilize the maximum system output of 340 kW (462 hp); the maximum system torque is 700 Nm.

Hybrid plus all-wheel drive.

The hybrid drive of the Touareg R essentially consists of a 2.995 cm3 V6 turbo engine, the electric motor and a lithium-ion battery integrated in the underbody of the trunk. Page 5 © Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft Touareg R / Geneva / Volkswagen / March 2020 (14,1, 8 kWh energy content). Power electronics convert the direct current of the battery into alternating current for the electric machine. Power is transmitted via an 4-speed automatic transmission (with Tiptronic) and a transfer case to the front and rear axles (70MOTION permanent all-wheel drive). A self-locking center differential with asymmetrical dynamic torque distribution (torsion) acts as a transfer case for the power flow between the front and rear axles. A maximum of 80 percent of the drive power reaches the front axle, up to XNUMX percent to the rear axle.

Up to 140 km / h purely electric.

When the Touareg R is started, it initially only accesses the electric motor when the battery is sufficiently charged. This ensures that the SUV is as emission-free as possible, especially on short journeys. This hybrid strategy also offers the greatest savings potential. The Touareg R can be driven purely electrically at a speed of up to 140 km / h; Above - or at any time via kickdown - the V6 TSI is automatically activated. The top speed of the SUV is electronically limited at 250 km / h.

Quick change between "E-Mode" and "Hybrid".

The driver can access the hybrid functions and drive profile selection using the "Menu" button on the 4MOTION Active Control in the center console or the corresponding menu in the infotainment system. Both are clearly arranged side by side on a common screen. The “E-Mode” for purely electric driving and the “Hybrid” mode are available as hybrid functions for the optimal and automatic interaction of the E and V6 engines. If the driver taps the "E-Mode" field in "Hybrid" mode, the Touareg R changes to pure electric drive at speeds of up to 140 km / h and a sufficiently charged battery. If, however, he touches the "Hybrid" field from "E-Mode", the SUV switches to this operating mode.

Control the battery in hybrid mode.

2020 VW Touareg R: strong Wolfsburg with 462 PS & 700 NM

Under the two screen fields "E-Mode" and "Hybrid" a battery scaled in ten levels is displayed; The driver can use this to intuitively read the respective charge level from the corresponding number of light blue battery segments (0 to 100 percent). For example, if the charge level were 40 percent, four segments would glow light blue. In the "Hybrid" mode, the driver can also use three symbols next to the battery to keep the charge level (via the equal sign "=") or increase it in 20 percent increments or let it decrease to a defined level. If he taps the arrow upwards and increases, for example, to 80 percent (eight segments), the battery is charged via V6 TSI and recuperation according to the level set on the scale; If, however, he taps on the down arrow and, for example, only marks two segments, the energy can be used up to the set minimum of 20 percent. In order to secure the desired energy content in the battery at the destination, the battery manager also takes into account the road and topography data predictively - with foresight - when route guidance is active. Based on the route data, the battery usage is adjusted in order to achieve an optimal electrical range.

Fast change of driving profiles.

The driver also controls the driving profile selection of the Touareg R via 4MOTION Active Control as shown. If he presses the "Menu" button, he is shown in the driving profile selection via the infotainment system. The “Eco”, “Comfort”, “Normal”, “Sport” and “Individual” street profiles as well as the “Offroad” and “Snow” off-road profiles are available as standard. However, the driver can also control these modes directly using the driving experience switch in the center console: If he turns the round switch to the left, he gets into the road profiles. If the switch is turned to the right, the off-road profiles open. If the Touareg R is equipped with the optional off-road package (including engine underbody protection), it can also activate the additional off-road profiles "gravel" and "sand".

Hybrid displays in the "Innovision Cockpit".

The Touareg R is equipped as standard with the "Innovision Cockpit". It consists of the digital instruments ("Digital Cockpit", 12-inch screen) and the screen of the infotainment system ("Discover Premium", 15-inch TFT touchscreen). The driver receives information specially designed for the Touareg R and the hybrid functions in the infotainment system via the displays "Energy flow" (display of the energy reserve of the battery and the energy supply of the drive and charging the battery) and "e-range monitor (display of the electrical range, the Driving profile and the potential to increase the range by switching off consumers). The current status of the hybrid system can be read in the "Powermeter / tachometer" combination display on the left in the "Digital Cockpit"; The display shows (when accelerating) or feeding (when decelerating) electrical energy and the hybrid mode. The remaining electrical distance and fuel range are also displayed.

The only SUV plug-in hybrid with "Trailer Assist".

The new Touareg R is the world's only SUV plug-in hybrid model with optional "Trailer Assist". The SUV maneuvers a trailer almost automatically backwards into a parking space or courtyard entrance via "Trailer Assist". In "e-mode" this also happens silently. To maneuver the Touareg R with the trailer backwards, the driver stops behind the indentation to the parking space for the trailer and engages in reverse gear. The system is activated by pressing the "Park Assist" button. The exterior mirror switch is now shown in the display. The driver receives information on how to set the desired steering angle using the mirror switch - which becomes a joystick here. As soon as he moves the switch, a symbol with a trailer appears in the display; the current and the trailer's newly set articulation angle are displayed here. With the help of the exterior mirror switch, the driver sets the desired direction of travel for his team. The "Trailer Assist" takes over the specified steering angle. The team is automatically aligned via the "Park Assist" control unit and the electromechanical power steering. In the first maneuvering phase, the driver chooses the articulation angle (up to 75 °) in order to turn backwards in a certain direction or to take a curve. When the trailer is straight in the direction of the destination, the driver simply pulls the mirror adjustment switch backwards. Now the trailer moves exactly backwards in the direction of the trailer without having to be manually corrected again.

"Travel Assist" up to 250 km / h.

The optional "Travel Assist" is new in the Touareg. So far, this system has enabled assisted driving at up to 210 km / h. In the Touareg, this support is available for the first time on German motorways up to a speed of 250 km / h. The "Travel Assist" accesses the automatic distance control "ACC" (longitudinal guidance) and the lane keeping assistant "Lane Assist" (lateral guidance). "Travel Assist" is activated via the new multifunction steering wheel. For legal and safety-related reasons, the driver should constantly monitor the system - for this he must have at least one hand on the steering wheel. Thanks to a new capacitive sensor system on the Touareg steering wheel, it is sufficient that the driver simply touches the valance.

Extended standard equipment.

The new top model of the series and the brand will come onto the market with an expanded and individualized standard equipment. The otherwise optional “R-Line” equipment world and the “Black Style” exterior design package, which is also subject to a surcharge for other models, form the basic matrix of the standard configuration.

"R" exteriors equipment.

The exterior package includes bumpers in "R" styling, bumper and door lower parts in body color, air intakes with slats in black, black trim strips on the side windows and black exterior mirror housings. Particularly elegant: the grille with its black trim. In the case of the Touareg R, there is a black trim in the lower part of the front bumper, the "R" logo (in the radiator grille, on the tailgate and the signets on the front fenders and doors) as well as darkened LED taillights. Also standard are the 20-inch “Braga” alloy wheels (black inside / outside with a high-sheen finish; alternatively in matt gray inside / outside with a high-sheen finish), wheel arch extensions in body color and trapezoidal design tailpipes.

"R" interior equipment.

The “R” -specific world of equipment is made up of the following features on the inside: trim strips on the instrument panel and door inlays in aluminum “Silver Wave”, trim in the center console in “Black high-gloss” and “Silver look”, leather “Vienna” for the comfort seats with “R "Logo in the headrests, bumper protection in stainless steel, a new generation of the multifunction steering wheel in leather (heated, with paddle shifters," R "logo and button for optional" Travel Assist "), illuminated door sills in stainless steel with" R "logo, Brushed stainless steel pedals and white ambient lighting. The seams of the leather seats are also in "crystal gray", as is the edging of the textile floor mats and the decorative stitching of the armrests, the selector lever and the door panels.

Extended functional equipment.

Compared to the classic Touareg equipment, the Touareg R will also come with an expanded range of functional features. The “Innovision Cockpit” with the “Digital Cockpit” (digital 12-inch instruments) and the infotainment system “Discover Premium” (15-inch TFT touchscreen), the “IQ.Light - LED matrix headlights” are standard on board (dipped and main beam controlled interactively by camera), a panorama pop-up / sliding roof and a 4-zone automatic climate control ("Air Care Climatronic").

Exclusive "R" options.

The typical Volkwagen R color “Lapiz Blue Metallic” (optional) is reserved exclusively for the Touareg R in the series. Also available as special equipment for the new top model are the 21-inch "Suzuka" rim (high-sheen finish or in black) and the 22-inch "Estoril" wheel offered for the first time (in black and black high-sheen). The black leather interior “Puglia” was also developed by Volkswagen R exclusively for the Touareg. The natural leather is tanned in a vegetal and correspondingly sustainable manner with olive oil. As a special visual characteristic, the leather seats have a diamond stitching that is as elegant as it is sporty, which is also reflected in the door panels. Another subtleties of the “Puglia” leather upholstery include a piping in “Sepang blue” in the seat bolsters; this piping corresponds to a thin, blue decorative seam that stretches across the instrument panel. The headrests are also finished with the "R" logo.

Optional high-tech features.

Additional highlights of the Touareg include technologies such as a 780 watt Dynaudio sound system, night vision support "Nightvision" (recognizes people and animals in the dark using a thermal imaging camera), for the first time as outlined "Travel Assist" (up to 250 km / h semi-automated steering and lane keeping, accelerating and braking) and an “intersection assistant” (reacts to cross traffic in front of the Touareg). For all Touareg series, the traffic sign recognition and lane keeping assistant are "Lane Assist". Thanks to a central control unit, the driver experiences all the assistance systems and also networked technologies such as the "IQ.Light - LED matrix headlights" as a homogeneous unit. The systems are permanently active as electronic assistants to provide unnoticed support in the background and make traveling safer, more comfortable and more intuitive than ever before.
