BMW M GmbH is preparing the generation change for two sports car icons. The series dynamic development process of the new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10,9 - 10,5 l / 100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 249 - 239 g / km, preliminary values) in its decisive phase. Newly developed in-line six-cylinder engines with a significantly higher output compared to the previous models and an M-specific chassis construction once again set standards in the segment of high-performance sedans and coupes of the premium mid-range. The extensive innovations in the areas of drive, wheel suspension, suspension and damping, steering and braking system require an extensive test program on public roads, in the BMW Group's test centers in Miramas in southern France and in Arjeplog in Sweden, as well as on various race tracks.

The Nürburgring Nordschleife traditionally sets the standard for the perfect interaction of drive and chassis technology in every driving situation. However, because the performance characteristics of a BMW M automobile have to convince not only there, but on a wide variety of route profiles, the test engineers are constantly expanding their testing program to include further circuits. This also includes the current coordination drives with camouflaged prototypes of the new BMW M3 sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé on the Sachsenring. A few months before its world premiere in mid-September 2020, the dynamic driving potential of the new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé can already be clearly seen. Enthusiasm for agility, outstanding dynamics and handling that can be precisely controlled even in extremely sporty situations characterize your driving behavior.

Racing technology for the street

The typical M balance of superior performance and unrestricted suitability for everyday use also reaches a new level. "With every BMW M automobile we bring racing technology onto the road“Says Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW M GmbH. "The new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé embody this principle in a particularly intensive way. Because both models are unmistakably in the tradition of the world's most successful touring car. And the results of the coordination runs show us that the new generation of models once again clearly outperforms its predecessors in terms of performance.“Like all current high-performance automobiles from BMW M GmbH, the new BMW M3 sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé are offered in two performance levels: in addition to a 353 kW / 480 hp variant with 6-speed manual transmission, there is also a competition Model with 375 kW / 510 hp and 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic to choose from.

"For customers who prefer the puristic performance experience and a particularly intensive interaction with their vehicle, the model variants with manual transmission are a unique offer in this vehicle segment“Explains Dirk Häcker, Head of Development M Automobile and BMW Individual. "With the competition models of the new BMW M3 sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé, on the other hand, we aim for maximum dynamics in power delivery and power transmission - initially with classic rear-wheel drive and at a later point in time also in connection with the latest version of our all-wheel drive system M xDrive."

The in-line six-cylinder engines of the new high-performance sports cars generate a maximum output increased by 36 kW / 49 PS or 44 kW / 60 PS (Competition models) and a maximum torque of up to 650 Nm. Thanks to M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-speed concept, it also impresses with performance characteristics derived directly from racing. The engine, which is exceptionally spontaneously appealing in every engine speed range, is also used in the BMW M4 GT3, which will be the new top model from BMW M GmbH in the customer sports segment from the 2022 season.

last test drives are still running

The development and test engineers at BMW M GmbH are currently using a meticulously operated testing program to ensure that the M-specific suspension components are matched to the performance characteristics of the engine so precisely that they place the new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé in the secure the first row of your vehicle segment. The approximately 3 meter long route of the traditional Sachsenring, known as the long-standing venue for races of the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) racing series, offers ideal conditions. With its sophisticated profile of tight hairpin bends, long straights and the downhill passage in front of the Queckenberg curve, the longitudinal and lateral dynamic driving characteristics of the new BMW M670 Sedan and the new BMW M3 Coupé can be optimized lap by lap.
