30 designers took part in the global creative competition of the BMW Group and the BMW Group company Designworks. The four-person jury consisting of Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design, Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design, Markus Flasch, CEO BMW M GmbH, and the then BMW Group Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt selected four spectacular designs. “The quality of all the submitted designs was impressive and underlines the creativity of our designers, as well as their passion for motorsport. All four selected designs emphasize the highly dynamic character of the BMW M4 GT4. They were particularly impressed by the perfect interplay of BMW Motorsport history, classic BMW M icons and the interpretation of the number four, ”the jury concluded.

The designs by Julia Quentin from BMW Motorrad in Munich (GER), Simon Haynes from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Design from Goodwood (GBR), and Wesselka Mandowa-Maier from Designworks are awarded by the jury and implemented as high-quality foils on the BMW M4 GT4 from Los Angeles (USA) and Li Tianyuan from BMW i Design from Munich (GER). The winning designs from four different design departments and three different countries reflect the great interest and importance of motorsport within the entire BMW Group.

The four winning designs:

Fractal Duality
Julia Quentin, BMW Motorrad Design, Munich

In her “Fractal Duality” design, the color and material designer at BMW Motorrad relies primarily on large-scale geometric shapes and a prominent integration of the number “04”: “My work combines two of my greatest passions, namely motorcycling and designing motorcycles . In my designs, I always think about how graphics and patterns can highlight the sculptural geometry of an object. Adding details and colors can completely transform and emotionalize a design. I love creating disruptive designs that convey a strong visual message. That's why I designed a geometric pattern for the BMW M4 GT4 with neatly cut squares and large typography. The eye must first understand the pattern before it sees the shape of the vehicle at second glance. "

Vivid momentum
Simon Haynes, Rolls Royce Motor Cars Design, Goodwood

The designer from the Coachbuild division at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has revived the legendary paintwork of BMW racing vehicles from the 1970s and reinterpreted it as “Vivid Momentum”: “This task was completely different from my normal job, but I was able to bring in my passion for motorsport. My design pays homage to one of the most eye-catching racing designs by BMW, which stood out from the other designs of its time. The concentric rings play with the original disc motif and radiate from the front wheel to the rear. In addition, the vehicle has a halftone structure that changes from a solid black to an intense metallic red from front to back. This underlines the feeling of speed and gives the vehicle a forward-looking stance. "

The Power of Four
Wesselka Mandowa-Maier, Designworks, Los Angeles

The Bulgarian-born designer, who after ten years in the service of MINI Design, has been working at the Designworks Studio in California since 2019, was inspired by the classic BMW M colors light blue, dark blue and red for her design "The Power of Four". that stand for power and dynamism: “I named my design 'The Power of Four'. I was inspired by the numbers in the name of the BMW M4 GT4, which also stands for an unimaginable power that the engine brings to the racetrack - only connected to one another by the four wheels. To support this idea in the design, all four views of the vehicle are abstractly divided by four. The classic BMW M colors are lively and powerful and give the vehicle additional energy. "

Fluid power
Li Tianyuan, BMW i Design, Munich

The exterior designer from BMW i relied on influences from his homeland for his “Fluid Power” design: “My main inspiration was calligraphy and Chinese painting with the contrast of black and white and the perfect balance between elegance and power. The design of the vehicle is asymmetrical. Two goldfish, which in China stand for perfection and happiness, but also symbolize powerful movement with their tail fin, swim in a circle around the driver when viewed from above and place him in the center. In addition to the Arabic number 4, this number is also attached to the body as a traditional Chinese calligraphy symbol. That stands for the tolerance and openness of a big brand like BMW towards the entire world culture and at the same time gives the M4 GT4 a very special, timeless and unforgettable look. "
