Even more power and even more driving pleasure: that's what the “performance” suffix at Audi Sport stands for. The new R8 V10 performance RWD comes as a Coupé and Spyder with 30 hp more and thus complements the R8 V10 performance quattro. The rear-wheel drive mid-engine sports car offers driving fun with a whopping 419 kW (570 hp) and features new technology highlights such as bucket seats, dynamic steering, CFRP stabilizers and ceramic brakes.

The Audi R8 V10 performance RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) is the new sporty spearhead of Audi's series sports cars with rear-wheel drive. “With its rear-wheel drive, derived from the LMS GT4 racing car, and its unfiltered dynamics, the Audi R8 V10 RWD impressed our customers straight away. Now it is coming onto the market with 30 hp and 10 Newton meters more and takes driving fun to a new level, ”says Sebastian Grams, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH. The basic versions of both models, i.e. the R8 V10 quattro67 and the R8 V10 RWD89 as Coupé and Spyder, will be replaced by the new performance models. This means that the R8 model family is positioned even more pointedly.

Top speed of 329 km / h

The mid-engine athlete catapults himself and the driver in 3,7 seconds (3,8 seconds for the Spyder) from 0 to 100 km / h and reaches a top speed of 329 km / h (327 km / h for the Spyder). The heart of the new R8 is the well-known free-aspirating 5,2-liter V10 FSI engine with an incomparable sound, lightning-fast response and immense revving. In the R8 V10 performance RWD, the engine has an output of 419 kW (570 hp)23 and brings a maximum of 550 Newton meters of torque, which is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 7-speed S tronic.

That is 10 Newton meters more torque than the Audi R8 V10 RWD. A mechanical limited-slip differential distributes the drive torque to match the driving situation, so that optimum traction is available even on wet roads. As with all R8s, the Audi Space Frame (ASF) body is made from aluminum and, to a large extent, from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The coupé version of the R8 V10 performance RWD weighs only 1.590 kilograms, the Spyder version 1.695 kilograms.

Controlled drifts are possible

The chassis and driving dynamics are specially adapted to the rear-wheel drive. If the sport mode is activated in the Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC), the suspension setup and the control systems allow controlled drifts. The electromechanical power steering provides intensive contact with the road. The dynamic steering, which is available for the first time for the rear-wheel drive R8, also offers an even more precise response and feedback. It increases driving dynamics through more direct steering behavior, for example on winding country roads or when turning. In addition, it ensures greater driving comfort through reduced steering effort, for example when parking and maneuvering.

The RWD sports suspension specially adapted for rear-wheel drive has double wishbones and a passive differential lock. The axle load distribution is 40:60. Particularly light 19- and 20-inch cast aluminum wheels ensure precise handling and high directional stability on fast cornering. Cup tires with dimensions of 245/30 R20 at the front and 305/30 R20 at the rear are available on request. They allow even more grip and dynamism. An 18-inch high-performance brake system made of steel in wave design and an optional 19-inch high-performance brake system made of ceramic ensure the necessary deceleration.

Well-known design features from the Audi R8 V10 performance quattro

The sporty, aggressive design is based on the GT4 siblings. These include the wide and flat single-frame radiator grille in matt black with the R8 emblem, flanked by large air inlets, the front splitter and the air outlet grille at the rear, as well as the oval tailpipes. The slot under the bonnet is reminiscent of the legendary Audi Sport quattro. The new R8 is available in a total of ten colors. This also includes ascari blue metallic, a color that was previously the case for the R8 V10 performance quattro45 was reserved. The “R8 performance” design package offers the matching interior with black Alcantara leather, contrasting stitching in Mercato blue and carbon inlays.

Racing car atmosphere in the interior

The taut lines also characterize the interior. The most striking element is the “monoposto” - the large, strongly contoured arch surrounds the area in front of the driver's seat and thus conveys the atmosphere of a racing car cockpit. The “Monoposto” includes the Audi virtual cockpit with a 12,3-inch display that is integrated into a free-standing housing. The R8 leather steering wheel with multifunction plus offers two or, in the "performance version", four operating satellites, each for operating Audi drive select, starting the engine, activating performance mode and the engine sound and controlling the Audi virtual cockpit. The driver and front passenger sit on the newly available R8 shell or sports seats, which are covered with leather and Alcantara. A badge with the words RWD shines in front of the passenger seat.

Production is largely done by hand

The R8 V10 performance RWD is produced - largely by hand - in the “Böllinger Höfe” factory at the Audi site in Neckarsulm. The LMS GT60 racing car, which is derived directly from the production model with around 4 percent identical parts, is also built there. Up to 40.000 highly qualified employees work in sports car production on around 1.000 square meters of production space. The rear-wheel drive Audi R8 V10 performance RWD23 can be ordered from October 21st. In Germany, the base price for the Coupé is 149.000 euros. The Spyder starts at 162.000 euros.
