Pioneer for fifth generation BMW eDrive technology.

The BMW iX3 is the pioneer for driving pleasure in a new generation of electric vehicles from the BMW i brand. It was the first model to be launched with the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology, which is now also used in the BMW iX and the BMW i4. Its highly integrated drive unit, in which the electric motor, power electronics and transmission are arranged in a common housing, generates a maximum output of 210 kW / 286 hp, which is brought onto the road in the classic form via the rear wheels.

The high-voltage battery in the BMW iX3 also comes from the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology. Its gross energy content of 80 kWh and the particularly high efficiency of the electric motor enable a range of up to 60 kilometers determined in the WL TP test cycle. From customer surveys and from comparison drives by professional and independent testers, it is clear that the BMW iX3, thanks to the high storage capacity of its lithium-ion battery, is exceptional even in everyday traffic and under demanding conditions, such as extremely low outside temperatures or a particularly sporty driving style long range achieved. Thanks to advanced charging technology, energy with an output of up to 150 kW can be fed in at direct current fast charging stations. In this way, enough electricity can be charged within 10 minutes to increase the range by 100 kilometers according to the WLTP test cycle. This helps the BMW iX3 to achieve convincing long-distance suitability.

Flexible vehicle architecture, start of production in September 2021. The new BMW iX3 is a fully-fledged Sports Activity Vehicle. Its unrestricted suitability for everyday use and its sporty, confident and safe driving characteristics are the result of an excellent overall vehicle harmony. Holistic approach to sustainability, positive environmental balance over the entire vehicle life cycle.

With its detailed update, the new BMW iX3 brings fresh momentum to the world of electromobility. In addition to its pioneering role in the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology, it has other parallels to the BMW iX and BMW i4 models. The holistic approach to sustainability, which is firmly anchored in the character of the BMW i brand, is particularly important. The associated objectives cover the entire vehicle life cycle from the procurement of raw materials through the supply chain, production and the usage phase to subsequent recycling and concern not only ecological but also social sustainability.

The proportion of the raw material cobalt used in the high-voltage battery of the BMW iX3 has been reduced to around a third compared to the previous battery generation (BMW i3 model year 2019). The BMW Group has established its own procurement process for the raw materials cobalt and lithium and forwards these to the producers of the battery cells from sources it controls with regard to compliance with environmental and social standards. For the production of the cells as well as for the production of the entire vehicle, electricity from renewable sources is used exclusively. The BMW-specific design principle of the engine makes it possible to dispense with the use of raw materials from the field of rare earth metals in the rotor. Contributions to the goals defined by the BMW Group in the areas of CO2 savings and circular economy are also made with the extensive use of secondary raw materials in the manufacture of cast aluminum components and thermoplastics.

As early as the development phase of the BMW iX3, it was determined that the all-electric SAV must be clearly superior to a conventional comparison vehicle in terms of its carbon footprint in terms of its overall life cycle. The advantage over a diesel engine-powered BMW X02 xDrive 3d, certified by independent auditors, is more than 20 percent when using average European electricity in the usage phase and around 30 percent when using only green electricity.

With powerful proportions, precisely guided lines and clearly designed surfaces in the brand's new design language, the new BMW iX3 presents itself as a modern Sports Activity Vehicle that combines versatility with brand-typical sportiness and a robust premium character. Color accents in BMW i blue, the largely closed BMW kidney grille and light alloy wheels with optimized aerodynamic properties refer to the purely electric drive and the vehicle concept that is consistently geared towards sustainability.

The characteristic combination of sporty driving pleasure and exemplary efficiency is expressed even more clearly in the exterior design of the new BMW iX3. The innovations include a modified design of the headlights and the BMW kidney grille as well as the side panels, the front and rear aprons. In addition, a model-specific M sports package is now part of the standard equipment of the all-electric SAV.

Striking appearance with borrowings from the BMW iX and BMW i4.

The BMW kidney grille, especially in the upper area, is larger than before and has a one-piece frame in pearlescent chrome and with a blue accent that is typical of BMW i on the inside. The inner surfaces of the kidney elements have a mesh-like structure and a BMW i emblem.

The new contours of the headlights also contribute to the particularly expressive appearance of the new BMW iX3. They are around ten millimeters flatter than before. As a result, the front section shows a striking resemblance to the appearance of the BMW iX and the BMW i4. The conceptual and technological parallels between the three latest BMW i models are emphasized even more intensely in the design. The standard equipment of the new BMW iX3 now also includes adaptive LED headlights with matrix function including variable light distribution, cornering and cornering lights as well as the glare-free high beam assistant BMW Selective Beam. Adaptive LED headlights with BMW laser light are optionally available. The dynamic laser light module increases the high beam range up to 60 meters at speeds of more than 650 km / h and follows the course of the road. Blue inserts in the L-shaped light elements of the daytime running lights indicate the particularly high-quality headlight technology.

M Sport package now part of the standard equipment.

In addition, the dynamic charisma of the new BMW iX3 is shaped by the design features of the M Sport package, which is now part of the standard equipment. As a result, the front apron now has a strongly three-dimensional and therefore athletic-looking surface design. The lower air inlet, which is equipped with an active air flap control that can be regulated in ten stages, for cooling drive components and brakes, has gained in size. The Air Breather on the front side walls also have an M-specific design, while the blue accent on the side skirts has been omitted. The rear apron of the new BMW iX3 is characterized by a powerful and aerodynamically optimized surface design. The outer elements of the rear diffuser are in BMW i blue. The outlines of the rear lights, which are made entirely of LED technology, are accentuated even more precisely by a black bezel. The striking night design is characterized by the narrow light graphic and a now three-dimensionally modeled pincer contour with filigree integrated, horizontal direction indicators.

Aerodynamically optimized light alloy wheels increase the range. 19-inch aerodynamic wheels are part of the standard equipment of the new BMW iX3. Their design contributes to the equipment-dependent low drag coefficient (Cw value) of 0,29 and thus also has a positive effect on the range of the purely electrically powered SAV. Redesigned 20-inch aerodynamic wheels with an M-specific design in the color jet block and aluminum inserts are now optionally available.

Interior and equipment.

More than ever, the BMW iX3 also brings out its sporty characteristics in the design of the interior. Sports seats are now standard equipment. The progressive premium appearance is underlined by a modern control panel on the center console and also redesigned control elements in the center of the dashboard. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional now includes a control display with a screen size enlarged to 12,3 inches. Newly illuminated door sills with BMW M lettering underline the model's sportiness.

Blue accents for the start / stop button now on the center console, the gear selector switch and the BMW emblem in the steering wheel indicate the purely electric drive of the BMW iX3. The new version of the driver-oriented cockpit design with ergonomically optimally arranged control elements serves to concentrate on what is happening on the road. The fully digital display network of the BMW iX3 now consists of a 12,3-inch instrument cluster and a control display enlarged to the same size. The start / stop button for the engine is now located in a redesigned control panel on the center console, where, in addition to the model-specific gear selector switch, the BMW controller as well as the buttons for the driving experience switch unit and the electromechanical parking brake are located.

Two attractive equipment lines.

The new BMW iX3 is offered in two attractive equipment lines. The fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology is highly scalable and can therefore be used in different vehicle concepts - initially in the BMW iX and BMW iLi and soon also in electrified models in other series.

Highly integrated drive system, excited electric motor.

At its premiere, the BMW iX3 already had a drive unit in which the electric motor, power electronics and transmission were arranged together in a central housing for the first time. This highly integrated electric drive topology is positioned in the model-specific rear axle carrier and makes it possible to significantly reduce the installation space and weight of the components in relation to the power they provide. Compared to the BMW eDrive technology previously used in electrified models (BMW i3 model year 2019), the power density is improved by around 30 percent in this way.

The electric motor of the new BMW iX3 works on the principle of an energized synchronous machine and differs significantly from other solutions on the market. The rotor is not excited by permanently installed permanent magnets, but by the supply of electrical current. This design makes it possible to completely dispense with the rare earth metals required for the magnetic components in the manufacture of the rotor. In addition, the latest version of the electric motor is extremely efficient. The engine efficiency is up to 93 percent, compared to today's internal combustion engines with values ​​of less than Li0 percent.

The maximum speed of the drive is 17.000 min-1. The maximum output of 210 kW / 286 hp is generated early on and across a wide engine speed range. With a value of Li00 Nm even from a standstill, the motor also achieves an exceptionally high maximum torque in relation to its size. Due to the specifically controlled excitation of the rotor, it is fully available immediately from a standstill and also remains stable up to higher speed ranges. The drive torque of the motor is transmitted via the shortest possible route to the single-stage gearbox housed in the same housing and from there to the rear wheels. An advanced driving stability control with wheel slip limitation close to the actuator ensures a confident forward thrust even in adverse road and weather conditions. The new BMW iX100 accelerates from zero to 3 km / h in 6,8 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 180 km / h.

High-voltage battery with high storage capacity.

The high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX3 is based on the latest, nickel-rich version of BMW cell chemistry. The lithium-ion storage system consists of individually controllable, prismatic battery cells that are grouped into 10 modules and individually enclosed in an aluminum housing. As a structural part of the body, the battery is located deep in the vehicle floor. With a gross energy content of 80 kWh, of which 74 kWh are used, the new generation of batteries has a favorable ratio between mass and storage capacity in the competitive environment.

In connection with the high efficiency of the electric motor, the adaptive recuperation while driving, the weight-optimized design and the reduced air resistance of the body, the high energy density of the high-voltage battery forms a holistic concept for sustainability as well as for everyday and long-distance suitability with a range determined in the WL TP test cycle of up to 460 kilometers. The BMW iX3 therefore differs significantly from other electric vehicles in the competitive environment, the range of which is increased primarily through the use of ever larger high-voltage batteries - with correspondingly negative effects on the weight and thus also on the overall efficiency of the vehicle.

The cells of the high-voltage battery - like all cells of the high-voltage batteries of the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology - are produced by the suppliers of the BMW Group exclusively with energy from renewable sources (hydropower, wind, solar).

BMW iX3 (Facelift 2021) - BMW Charging.

With the comprehensive range of BMW Charging, the driver of a new BMW iX3 has tailor-made charging products, services and digital services at their disposal. The scope of delivery of the purely electrically powered SAV in Europe includes the BMW Charging Card, a Mode 3 charging cable for using public charging stations and the Flexible Fast Charger.

The Flexible Fast Charger can charge electricity with an output of up to 11 kW. It can be connected to a household socket using a six meter long charging cable or - with adapters that are also available - to more powerful industrial sockets. A BMW Wallbox with an output of up to 11 kW is optionally available for charging at home. In cooperation with high-performance partners, a “Smart Wall box” with extensive networking, which enables, for example, the billing of privately charged electricity for a company vehicle, as well as an installation service and special green electricity tariffs are offered.

Combined Charging Unit for fast charging with up to 150 kW.

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) used in the new BMW iX3 enables particularly high flexibility when connecting to different types of charging stations and is therefore suitable for convenient and fast feeding of electrical energy into the vehicle in all international automotive markets. When using alternating current connections (AC), the CCU enables both single-phase charging with an output of up to 7 / l kW and three-phase charging with up to 11 kW. When connected to a direct current fast charging station (DC), charging capacities of up to 150 kW can be achieved.

The high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX3 can be charged from zero to 7,5 percent in 100 hours at the wall box. The battery can be charged from 32 to 10 percent of its total capacity within 80 minutes at a direct current rapid charging station. There, enough electricity can be fed in within 10 minutes to increase the range by 100 kilometers in the WL TP test cycle.

Favorable tariffs for the use of high power charging stations.

With a one-time registration, the public charging service from BMW Charging offers access to more than 200.000 public charging points from over 500 charging infrastructure operators in Europe alone. In Germany alone, there is access to more than 33.000 charging points from around 300 charging current providers. These can be used by BMW charging users with just one card or app. The high power charging network of the BMW Group subsidiary IONITY is also integrated into the BMW charging network.

Thanks to a uniform tariff structure, charging with BMW Charging is not only convenient, but also particularly attractive from an economic point of view. Depending on their charging preferences and their individual driving or charging profile, customers can choose between the “Flex” and “Active” basic tariffs. The “IONITY Plus” package is also available. In the "Active" tariff, fixed kilowatt hour prices apply for alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) in the network of connected operators and regardless of the price displayed on the charging station. For customers in Germany, the costs are 33 cents per kWh for AC charging, 39 cents per kWh for DC charging and 35 cents per kWh for IONITY. This means that the energy costs for the use of public charging stations for the driver of a BMW iX3 in Germany are around 25 percent lower than the costs for a comparable vehicle with a diesel engine. Overall, BMW Charging customers have full cost control in the “Active” tariff - at more than 200.000 charging points in Europe.

Connected charging with new features in the My BMW app.

On the way, public charging stations along the route traveled or near the destination are displayed in BMW Mops. BMW iX3 (Facelift 2021) - Connectivity and driver assistance systems

With the recently revised news app, BMW iX3 customers benefit from an improved range of news-on-demand and infotainment podcasts. With Connected Parking, BMW Mops also helps the driver to find a free parking space near his destination. The driver receives an indication of the parking situation at the destination at the forecast time of arrival when selecting the navigation destination. Shortly before arrival, information about the nearest parking garage is helpful, as are suggestions for a route that is particularly likely to find a parking space near the destination. The well-known On-Street Parking Information and ParkNow services are intelligently integrated into the functionality of BMW Mops.

Comprehensive integration of the smartphone and popular services.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes optimized smartphone integration and supports Apple CarPlay®, among other things. This means that a large number of apps such as the Siri digital voice service, various map apps, music streaming services such as Apple Music or the WhatsApp messaging service can be used. Thanks to a wireless connection between the iPhone and the vehicle, the apps are integrated directly into the display and operating system. With Google Android Auto ™, the BMW Group has expanded its range of seamless networking in the vehicle to include another customer-relevant service. Android Auto in the BMW offers simple and safe use of smartphone functions such as music, media or messaging apps while driving. With the help of the Google Assistant, the customer can interact with his smartphone and the actions taken are shown on the vehicle's info display. Highlights in the interaction between Android Auto and BMW are the convenient, wireless networking and the intelligent integration of the Google Mops ™ navigation instructions in the BMW head-up display.

Thanks to the deep integration of Amazon Alexa, it is possible to use Amazon's voice service in the vehicle as the customer is used to at home. Editing shopping lists, calling up messages or playing music is now even easier. It is also possible to control compatible Smart Horn devices from the vehicle. With the help of the My BMW app, Amazon Alexa can be set up in the vehicle in just a few steps.

BMW digital key.

The optional BMW Digital Key enables the BMW iX3 to be unlocked and locked using Near Field Communication (NFC) with the Apple iPhone. The conventional car key is no longer necessary. Advanced driver assistance systems.

The progressive character of the new BMW iX3 is also reflected in the extraordinarily wide range of functions of its driver assistance systems. Since its market launch in November 2020, the purely electrically powered SAV has had numerous automated driving and parking functions that are only offered in the conventionally powered model variants of the BMW X3 as part of the current model revision. This makes the BMW iX3 a trailblazer for innovative technology in this area too. In addition, its standard equipment already includes almost all available assistance systems.

The driver assistance systems process camera images as well as the data collected by ultrasound and radar sensors in order to monitor the vehicle environment, warn of possible dangers and minimize the risk of accidents with braking or steering interventions.
