At first you might not believe that something like that Engine swap is possible at all, but in the age of the electrification of the automobile there hardly seem to be any limits. For many BMW fans, however, it is sacrilege that of all things one of the most beautiful and stylish models of the brand with the white and blue propeller, which still inspires today with its timeless design External drive received, and a legendary one for it BMW V8 suction gasoline engine had to give way. But tuner and electrical engineer Damian Maguire from Ireland, which has already electrified six other BMWs, has shown with the project that even a classic BMW does not have to fall victim to new exhaust gas guidelines and emission regulations, and therefore may still be on the road in 20 years' time.
You don't suspect anything from the outside!
Just like various American ones Electric mods, also puts on Damien Maguire Large-scale electrical engineering, in this case from the US giant Tesla. We are now introducing you to this E31 in more detail. The vehicle did not receive any major exterior modifications, only the front Lowering springs built by Cobra, which push the vehicle 40 mm closer to the asphalt, and adjustable at the rear thread springs from GAZ. A special one subframe in the rear part of the chassis had to find its way into the 8 series so that the drive unit of the Tesla could be built into the classic.
The vehicle was also with 17-inch alloy wheels from Style 32 provided to create a classic, sporty impression. Instead of one Exhaust System became one at the stern 50 kW CHAdeMO AC charging socket attached in order to be able to load the 8 series without any problems. Last but not least, the formerly silver E31 was also added repaintedin the original BMW color Orient Blue, a subtle dark blue that goes perfectly with the timelessly beautiful automobile. In the interior, by the way, was the Automatic selector lever of an E60-M5, which originally operated the much-scolded SMG gearbox.
Rear engine from the 2016 Tesla Model S 90
The drive unit of the Tesla Model S, which incidentally is located in the rear of the car, generates befitting its status 392 PSwhich are present immediately after the start. The torque is unimaginable 1505 Newton meters. There is an additional one under the bow 16 kWh battery an Opel Ampera, and the power is transmitted via a One step automatic with a 9.8: 1 ratio. Only the rear wheels are still driven. It's hard to believe at first, but the engine swap made the 8th easier and, according to the tuner, should also be more agile. Thanks to the gigantic torque that is still available immediately after take-off, the car should be an absolute killer on the quarter mile. Unfortunately, the range of the prototype, which is still in the development phase, is so far on 80 km limited.
Our Conclusion for the BMW 8 Series Coupé:
A brave project that will make many BMW fans turn up their noses. However, we are curious to see what will become of this vehicle and whether a larger battery will find its way into the car so that it can be driven in everyday life.
