New hybrid spider: the Ferrari 296 GTS (2022)!

The "WITH" in the Ferrari 296 makes the difference between the 296 GTB and the 296 GTS. The new Hybrid Spider is a Targa-style fresh air fan. It adopts the technological and stylistic recipe of the Berlinetta variant and ensures tingling excitement outdoors, even on the racetrack. And with the choice of Assetto Fiorano version the offer becomes even more complete. This variant improves the performance and aerodynamics of the car even more. But what are the novelties of the 296? Ferrari installed the hardtop in the GTS, which consists of two separate elements and can be opened while driving in around 14 seconds at up to 45 km/h. When closed, however, the shape of the Spider remains the well-known Berlinetta.

Ferrari 296 GTS (2022)

The team at Centro Stile Ferrari (led by Flavio Manzoni) made a successful effort to keep the contours of the GTB but still give the 296 GTS a unique touch. A new hood was designed, as well as a special glass pane over the engine compartment. This allows you to take a look at the V6 engine at any time. When the soft top is open, the passenger compartment and the rear are separated by a height-adjustable, electric glass rear window. According to Ferrari, this reduces turbulence and air vortices. The interior impresses with the same luxury and identical technology as found in the Berlinetta. The personalization of the upholstery and the linings are, as usual, at the highest level. One of the strengths remains the aerodynamics. The package supplied with the 296 GTS remains extensive and includes an active rear spoiler, a front splitter and "Aero"-calipers.

The rear spoiler was inspired by the LaFerrari. It automatically raises at high speeds, creating a high-downforce configuration of the Assetto Fiorano with up to downforce 360 kg at 250 km/h. The splitter mentioned, on the other hand, is responsible for the air management at the front. It directs the air to the lower area. As a result, it supports the coolers by connecting them to special bulkheads. Incidentally, the "Aero" calipers were introduced for the first time on the SF90 Stradale and they have a special air intake, thanks to which they receive the "oxygen" from the openings in the front bumper. And when it comes to tuning, the braking system also occupies an important place. It's brake-by-wire and digital instead of hydraulic. It regulates the braking intensity as well as a possible intervention by the ABS.

Braking distance from 200 km/h reduced by 8,8 percent

The advantages of the new system include shorter pedal travel and better repeatability of shorter braking distances. This also includes the ability to brake closer and later at the apex of corners. Incidentally, the GTS, like the GTB, is equipped with ABS EVO. The system is active in the Race driving mode and higher. It estimates the speed more precisely and optimizes the braking force distribution. According to Ferrari, the braking distance from 200 km/h to the stand should increase 8,8 percent shorten compared to the F8 Spider. The braking system also makes an important contribution to energy recovery. With recuperation when braking, the athlete can constantly charge his battery.

The 296 GTS shares the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the 296 GTB. The 2,9-liter biturbo V6 is also coupled with an electric motor, with a system output of 830 PS. The combustion engine alone is already powerful 663 PS. This is a record of 221 hp among all production vehicles per liter displacement. And the emission-free electric unit even comes from Formula 1 and has an output of up to 167 PS. It is supported by a 7,45 kWh battery, which enables a pure electric drive of up to 25 kilometers. Incidentally, the tried-and-tested 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission also distributes the engine power in the new vehicle. Incidentally, the 296 GTS can be used in various configurations, whereby the most suitable one can be selected directly from the eManettino.

purely electric driving up to 135 km/h

The eDrive mode allows driving up to 135 km/h purely electrically. Of the Hybrid mode is the default setting and combines the action of the two motors. Of the Performance mode always leaves the combustion engine activated and delivers maximum power. And finally he combines Qualify mode the maximum power to maintain battery charge. By the way, it brings the best Fiorano equipment with himself. It turns the 296 GTS into a real racing car. The package brings additional aerodynamics and weight reduction with carbon fiber details. Other highlights include Multimatic dampers from GT racing and a special paint finish inspired by the 250 Le Mans. Also optional Michelin racing tires of the Pilot Sport Cup2R type are included.
