The electric sports car from Porsche has set 13 British long-distance records with numerous well-known drivers behind the wheel. At the Brands Hatch Circuit, the world has witnessed the historic long-distance successes of Porsche several times. In April 1970, Pedro Rodriguez and Leo Kinnunen drove their 917 to victory in a completely rainy 1.000-kilometer race with an incredible five-lap advantage. In July 1984 the first six places in this race went to Porsche, with Jan Lammers and Jonathan Palmer in the 956 in the lead.

During another 1.000-kilometer race on the famous British Indy Circuit in December, two Taycans set no less than 13 different records, all of which were confirmed by Motorsport UK. The steering of the standard Taycan 4S and a Turbo S variant with road approval were shared by drivers such as Le Mans legend Richard Attwood, former Formula 1 and Porsche driver Jonathan Palmer and the winner of the 2020 Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain Harry King and the winner of the 2020 Cayman Islands Porsche Sprint Challenge GB James Dorlin.

The starting signal for the record laps was given at 7 a.m., and the race ended at 20 p.m. - so the laps on the Brands Hatch circuit were spun in the dark for many hours. Similar to the 1970 race, the occasional heavy rain shower ensured that the road was at least consistently damp. The experienced racing drivers, each of whom completed two or three stints of around 90 minutes, proved to be quite up to the challenge.

In the "Electric cars over 1.000 kilograms" category, the Taycan 4S set records for the times measured from 0 to 50 kilometers, 50 miles, 100 kilometers, 500 kilometers, 500 miles and 1.000 kilometers, as well as for the distance covered in one hour from a standing start (98,192 kilometers).

At the same time, the Turbo S set records in the same category for the measured times from 0 to 200 kilometers, 100 miles and 200 miles as well as for the three hours (252,356 kilometers), six hours (450,065 kilometers) and 12 hours ( 915,762 kilometers) distances covered.

Around 50 years after his podium finish at the 1.000-kilometer Brands Hatch race behind the wheel of the 917, Attwood has returned to this circuit to join the ranks of drivers for a Taycan 4S in the specially designed Salzburg design. 36 years after his glorious victory, Palmer took a seat in a Taycan Turbo S. The paintwork of the Taycan was based on its car from 1984.

Due to the slippery road surface and the additional requirement to drive particularly efficiently, the drivers had to take the corners as quickly as possible so as not to use too much energy on hard acceleration and braking. Both Attwood and Palmer were familiar with this driving style from their long-distance careers and so they were able to pass their experiences on to the next generation, King and Dorlin. Even before the last laps, both vehicles achieved energy savings of around five percent per lap through their sophisticated driving technology.

The framework conditions could hardly have been more demanding - also in view of the strict regulations that were implemented to comply with the distance rules. But the 800-volt technology of the Taycan (Taycan Turbo S: combined CO2 emissions 0 g / km, combined power consumption 28,5 kWh / 100 km; Taycan 4S: combined CO2 emissions 0 g / km, combined power consumption 27,0 - 26,2 kWh / 100 km) enables consistently high performance, lower weight and shorter charging times. In addition, the Performance Battery Plus with 93,4 kWh, thanks to a maximum power consumption of 270 kWh, can be charged from five to 22,5 percent in just 80 minutes under optimal conditions - which is a crucial aspect in such a record attempt.

The thermal management of the Taycan turned out to be a further significant advantage. The highly efficient, intelligent system for heating and cooling the high-voltage components prevents possible power losses due to excessive heat generation and ensures the correct charging temperature. Despite an ambient temperature of just eight degrees Celsius at Brands Hatch and the heat generation as a result of the consistently high speeds, the temperature of the battery always remained within the desired range.

During the record drive of 1.000 kilometers, the Taycan 4S spent a total of three hours and three seconds driving in and out of the charging area and charging itself, which took place in a total of six stops. On average, such a stop lasted around 30 minutes, in which the batteries of the vehicles were charged from around five percent to 85 percent.
