Air-conditioned glove compartment - what options are there?

Especially in summer you want a way to, for example, certain Medication, drinks or food cooled to be able to transport. Unfortunately, since many vehicles do not already offer this option ex works and a large cool box is not always wanted or available, we want to go into the topic of conversion options and retrofitting one in this article refrigerated glove box get in.

How does such a conversion work?

Basically, the glove box must be connected to the vehicle's ventilation system. For the supply of cooled air in the vehicle, of course, it is imperative to have an intact Air conditioning be built in. If not, then retrofitting is of no use. Because the warm air from outside is useless. Alternatively, you can of course also use a Retrofit air conditioning. Everyone has to decide for themselves whether and to what extent this effort is worthwhile. If the air conditioning is already installed, there are cheap ones for many vehicles Retrofit kits, with which an uncooled glove compartment can be modified for a cooling function. Alternatively, many vehicle models can be fitted with parts from better equipped other types of the same model in which an air-conditioned glove compartment was installed ex works.

Example: Installation of the factory cooling from an Audi A4 in an Audi A3!

With one included in the conversion kit Valve (usually this is a small knob / slider) the cooling can then be controlled separately from the vehicle ventilation. So that the cooled air can also reach the interior of the glove compartment, the end of the hose is routed to one of the built-in air outlets. The hose is then inserted into a previously prepared hole and sealed.

What tools are needed?

A screwdriver set is required for the conversion. A complete bit set with cross and Torx bit attachments is recommended here. This means that all common screws can be removed. A drill with the appropriate drill size is required to drill the air inlet. A scalpel or hobbyist's knife is recommended to make minor adjustments and to ensure a tight fit of the attachments. So that the cooled air doesn't already before entering can escape into the glove compartment, a hot glue gun or some body glue (or another adhesive that is as flexible as possible) needed. This makes it easy to seal inaccuracies in the air inlet and outlet that occurred during the conversion.

Before the actual conversion of the glove compartment can be carried out, the footwell cover must first be removed from many vehicles. In addition, the shelf mounted under the glove compartment must be unscrewed. Below is a small overview of the rough Work steps:

  1. Remove the glove compartment as completely as possible
  2. Drill a hole and fit the valve in the glove compartment
  3. Drill a hole in the air supply line from the vehicle
  4. Insert the hose into the supply line and seal it
  5. Reinstall the glove box
  6. Connect the hose to the control valve
  7. Click the control valve into the opening
  8. done

Often there are also vehicles in which the procedure is already planned and only smaller components are missing. It may only be necessary to insert the control valve in the glove compartment and that's it. This varies greatly depending on the vehicle.

What must be taken into account when converting

In vehicles with a passenger airbag, the positive terminal of the battery should be disconnected before removing the glove compartment. Since the connector for the passenger deactivation must be disconnected when removing, it can otherwise happen that in the on-board computer
an airbag fault is filed or the airbag in the worst case triggers. Depending on the vehicle, the conversion is usually relatively easy without the use of special tools and can even be done by laypeople within 1,5 - 2 hours.
