With the new EQS 53 4MATIC +, Mercedes-AMG is embarking on the fully electric future of driving performance. The first battery-electric AMG series model is based on the Mercedes-EQ architecture for luxury and upper-class vehicles. It fits seamlessly into the group-wide electrical strategy. The luxury sedan with up to 560 kW was newly developed or further developed in Affalterbach in all performance-relevant areas. It impresses with brand-specific features wherever the customer can experience it directly: from the technology to the exterior and interior design to the emotional vehicle sound.

“The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + is the first fully electric ambassador in the performance segment, made in Affalterbach. It is tailor-made for car enthusiasts who are looking for a combination of innovative electric mobility in a luxurious ambience, paired with sportiness and agile driving dynamics. With our first fully electric AMG vehicle, we will undoubtedly appeal to a new clientele for Mercedes-AMG and we will certainly be able to convince them. In addition, the EQS 53 is further proof that Mercedes-Benz is consistently advancing electrification in all of its brands. Further fully electric AMG models will follow, in the not too distant future also on our AMG.EA platform, which was developed completely in-house, ”says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The heart of the new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + is its performance-oriented drive concept with two engines. The powerful electric drivetrain with one motor each on the front and rear axles offers the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC + all-wheel drive, which optimally transfers the drive power to the asphalt under all driving conditions. The basic version achieves a maximum total output of 484 kW (658 PS), the maximum electric motor torque is 950 Nm. With the optionally available AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package, the maximum output in RACE START mode with boost function increases to up to 560 kW (761 hp). The maximum e-machine torque comes up to 1.020 Nm.

Then the new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + accelerates from 75-3,4 km / h in 0 seconds with a battery charge level of at least 100 percent. The top speed is limited to 250 km / h with the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package. In the basic version, the AMG EQS accelerates from 3,8-0 km / h in 100 seconds (at least 30 percent battery charge). The maximum speed is limited here to 220 km /.

AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE: Emotional sound spectrum for a unique driving experience

Mercedes-AMG vehicles have always stood for emotion. The vehicle sound was and is an important part of the typical AMG driving experience. It will stay that way in the future. The EQS 53 4MATIC + brings a new, powerful, sonorous sound to electric driving. With the help of special loudspeakers, a bass actuator and a sound generator, his sound system creates a special sound experience in the two versions "Authentic" or optionally "Performance". This exclusive AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE is played inside and outside in terms of tone and intensity to match the respective driving condition, the selected driving program or the driver's wishes.

AMG-specific electric motors for perfectly balanced driving performance

The AMG-specific electric motors on the front and rear axles are permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PSM). The consistent performance characteristic is already evident here from the power and torque values. In addition, the e-machines from Mercedes-AMG are characterized by an optimal balance of increased performance, efficiency and noise comfort. This is ensured, among other things, by new windings, stronger currents and a new control via inverter with specially developed software. This enables higher engine speeds and thus more power, which sets standards especially when it comes to acceleration and top speed.

The electric motor on the rear axle of the EQS 53 4MATIC + is particularly powerful. A major reason for this is the six-phase design, based on two windings with three phases each. The stators with pull-in windings ensure a particularly strong magnetic field.

In addition, there is the highly resilient thermal concept, which enables repeated acceleration maneuvers with consistently high performance. The heart of the sophisticated design is the so-called water lance in the rotor's shaft, which cools it. Other AMG-specific cooling elements in the cooling circuit are special ribs on the stator and the needle-shaped pin-fin structure on the inverter, which is made from high-performance ceramics. There is also the additional transmission oil cooler, which also increases efficiency when driving cold, as it heats the transmission oil if necessary.

Intelligent recuperation for efficient energy recovery

The new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + sets standards not only with its highly dynamic power delivery when accelerating, but also with efficient energy recovery when braking. The recuperation power reaches up to 300 kW[2].

The driver can set the level of recuperation in three stages using paddle shifters on the steering wheel and receive support from the ECO Assistant in a situation-optimized manner. Combined braking can be carried out to a standstill. With the help of the optional DRIVE PILOT, the deceleration takes place automatically on detected vehicles in front until they come to a standstill, for example at a traffic light.

New generation of batteries with a capacity of 107,8 kWh

The new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + is equipped with a powerful 400-volt battery that is manufactured using the latest lithium-ion technology. A major step in terms of sustainability has been achieved in cell chemistry: the cobalt content has been reduced to ten percent, the optimized active material consists of nickel, cobalt and manganese in a ratio of 8: 1: 1.

The high-voltage battery has a usable energy content of 107,8 kWh. A special technical feature is the AMG-specific wiring harness used here, which is adapted to the high performance. The battery management system is also tailored specifically to AMG. In the Sport and Sport + driving programs, the focus is on performance, in the Comfort driving program on range. The new generation of batteries is characterized by a significantly higher energy density compared to previous developments. It also has a higher charging capacity. Another new feature is the possibility of installing updates for the battery management system over-the-air.

Shorter charging times thanks to intelligent thermal management

Another advantage of the new generation of batteries is the significantly reduced charging times. As with the sister model from Mercedes-EQ, the energy storage device can charge up to 200 kW at fast charging stations with direct current. In this case, electricity can be "refueled" for up to a further 19 kilometers (WLTP) after just over 300 minutes.[3]. Thanks to the onboard charger, the electrified AMG can be conveniently charged at home or at public charging stations with up to 22 kW (optional) using alternating current. In Japan, bi-directional charging will also be possible, i.e. charging in both directions. There are also intelligent charging programs that can be activated automatically depending on the location. Functions such as particularly battery-saving charging make charging even more efficient.

The efficient thermal management also contributes to the reduction in charging times. If the intelligent navigation with Electric Intelligence is activated, the battery is preheated or cooled during the journey, if necessary, in order to reach the optimal temperature for fast charging at the charging point. The desired temperature field of the battery is achieved with the help of the cooling circuit and a PTC heater (positive temperature coefficient) integrated there.

The aim of the battery design is to ensure the optimal operating temperature of the energy storage device under all operating conditions. The extruded aluminum profiles of the battery frame have defined cavities through which the coolant flows. In sum, the intelligent temperature and charging management ensures that high charging currents can be maintained for a long time.

The battery is also characterized by its longevity. The ECO Charging function makes a significant contribution to this: the intelligent control system reduces the load on the battery when charging and thus slows down the natural aging process of the battery. There are also advantages for the customer from the “charging interruption” function: The charging process can be paused at freely selectable times, for example to be able to use cheaper night-time electricity at a later point in time. The battery certificate stands for the long service life of high-voltage batteries. It is valid up to a term of ten years or up to a mileage of 250.000 kilometers.

Fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC +

The standard, fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC + all-wheel drive brings the power of the battery-fed motors to the road. The system distributes the drive torque between the front and rear axles steplessly depending on the driving situation: Compared to a mechanical all-wheel drive, the electro-specific system ensures even faster reactions. The torque is checked 160 times per second and set if necessary. The torque is distributed depending on the selected drive program: In the “Comfort” program, the focus is on maximum efficiency, while in “Sport” and “Sport +” the power is distributed more rear-heavy in the interests of greater lateral dynamics.

Tires specially developed for higher levels of performance

The tires developed jointly with MICHELIN also take into account the high dynamic potential and the performance-oriented character of the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC +. The development teams from Mercedes-AMG and the French tire manufacturer tailored the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV, which was specially designed for sports cars with electric drive, to the requirements of the first fully electric AMG series model. The profile and the rubber compound are geared towards the high torque and the strong acceleration forces and ensure a long service life. The tire received top marks and the coveted A label for its low rolling resistance (important for a long range) and the very good wet grip properties. Comfort has also been thought of: a polyurethane foam that is integrated into the tire significantly reduces driving noise.

AMG RIDE CONTROL + suspension with adaptive adjustable damping

Like the EQS from Mercedes-EQ, the chassis of the new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + has a four-link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear. The AMG engineers have further developed the components in a targeted manner and fine-tuned them so that they meet the special requirements of AMG customers. This applies to driving comfort as well as driving dynamics. The AMG RIDE CONTROL + suspension has air suspension, combined with an adaptive, electronically controlled damping adjustment in combination with the standard rear-axle steering.

New and AMG-specific are those chassis components that have an impact on driving dynamics. This applies, for example, to the rear axle carrier, which the engineers in Affalterbach have completely redeveloped. The subframe and engine bearings are also completely new developments and are reserved exclusively for AMG models. This also applies, among other things, to the revised transverse stabilizers as well as the wheel carriers and handlebars, which are derived from other AMG Performance models.

In the standard air suspension of the EQS 53 4MATIC +, as in the AMG GT 4-door Coupé, two so-called pressure relief valves are used. With the help of these stepless control valves attached outside the damper, the damping force can be adapted even more precisely to different driving conditions and driving programs: A valve controls the rebound stage, i.e. the force that arises when the bike rebounds. The other is the compression level when the wheel compresses. The rebound and compression levels are regulated independently of each other. This technology makes it possible on the one hand to increase comfort, but on the other hand to make the driving dynamics even sportier.

The chassis control unit uses data analysis - including from acceleration and wheel travel sensors - to adjust the damping force for each wheel in a matter of milliseconds, depending on the situation. The AMG developers were able to significantly increase the spread between sportiness and comfort. Among other things, through the expansion between the minimum and maximum damping force characteristic as well as even greater flexibility in the design of the map. By using the two adjusting valves, the damper is able to guarantee the damping force adjustment in all areas of the wheel vibrations. Thanks to the special design of the valves, the damper reacts quickly and sensitively to changes in road surfaces and driving conditions.

With rear axle steering as standard

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + is equipped with rear-axle steering as standard. The steering angle of up to 9 degrees promotes the agile handling of the large sedan enormously. The turning circle is 11,5 meters - that's compact class level.

The interaction between the front-axle and rear-axle steering is designed in such a way that agile response is achieved with little steering effort on city and country roads. At speeds of less than 60 km / h, the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction of the front wheels. The AMG EQS is manoeuvrable, light-footed and agile. This has a particularly positive effect when turning, when changing direction quickly and when maneuvering.

From a speed of more than 60 km / h, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front wheels. The virtual longer wheelbase as a result offers increased driving stability and safety at high speeds, quick lane changes or sudden evasive maneuvers.

For an individual driving experience: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs

The driver can change the driving characteristics of the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + at the push of a button in order to adapt them to the respective situation or his preferences. This is made possible by the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs “Smoothness”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport +” and “Individual”. The programs cover a broad spectrum, from a high level of comfort to pronounced sportiness. Important parameters such as drive and performance characteristics, suspension settings, steering, AMG Dynamics and AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE are modified according to the selected drive program. The maximum drive power can be called up in the Sport + drive program (or with kick-down).

The driver can also pre-select the basic set-up of the chassis using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs: At the push of a button, the driving behavior varies, for example, from maximum dynamism in the “Sport +” mode to smooth gliding in the “Comfort” setting. In addition, the tuning can be adjusted in three stages via its own button, independently of the driving programs.

Depending on the driving program, the central drive control unit automatically activates different de-rating and cooling strategies: With "Sport" and "Sport +", the cooling system is activated earlier and the cooling capacity is increased in order to be able to keep the released capacity longer. The driver has the option of increasing driving pleasure - for example on closed-off routes - using the ESP OFF function.

AMG high-performance composite braking system

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + not only reaches the top level in terms of driving dynamics, but also in terms of driving safety. The first evidence of this is the AMG high-performance composite brake system with six-piston brake calipers and brake discs measuring 415 × 33 millimeters on the front axle and single-piston brake calipers and brake discs measuring 378 × 22 millimeters on the rear axle. With the optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system, even larger brake discs measuring 440 × 40 millimeters are used at the front. Another high-tech feature is the additional i-Booster function. It ensures that the brake system combines electrical recuperation with the hydraulic brake in a highly efficient manner. For an authentic driving experience, the i-Booster is specially tailored to the typical AMG pedal feel and the larger AMG brake system.

AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE: a unique sound experience with a wide range

With the AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE, the performance and sports car brand is giving electromobility a new voice - a soundtrack that emotionally enhances the dynamic driving experience. Like the driving programs, the acoustic composition also offers a wide range: In the standard basic version “Authentic”, the customer can regulate the powerful, sonorous sound and its intensity depending on the driving condition and the selected driving program. The typical AMG drive sounds are generated with the help of additional hardware. These include special loudspeakers, a bass actuator and a sound generator.

Another option for even more individuality: the driver can use the AMG steering wheel buttons or the central display to select the sound characteristics "Balanced", "Sport" and "Powerful" in each drive program. At RACE START, the vehicle generates a unique sound that matches the dynamic acceleration.

The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package also includes the AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE "Performance", which creates an even more emotional soundscape. In addition to the drive sounds, it also includes a large part of the so-called event sounds - suitable sounds for all vehicle functions that generate noises. This includes unlocking and locking the vehicle as well as starting and stopping the engine. The program even simulates the clicking of the blinker, because many drivers do not want to miss the familiar sound. The AMG-specific event sound that sounds when you get into the vehicle is completely new. The event sounds can be deactivated at any time via the settings of the multimedia system - separately for outside and inside.

With its one-bow lines and the cab-forward design with hatchback, the AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + differs significantly from vehicles with a combustion engine at first glance. The design philosophy is reflected in generously modeled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions. The exterior design also takes up characteristic AMG elements and transfers them into the fully electric age. The result: an unmistakable, brand-typical appearance paired with maximum aerodynamic efficiency. The front view with standard DIGITAL LIGHT headlights is characterized by the AMG-specific black panel grill with hot-stamped vertical struts in chrome, integrated Mercedes star and "AMG" lettering. The independent design language is continued in the front bumper, which is painted in the same color as the vehicle. The front apron in the typical AMG A-wing design, which is painted in high-gloss black and has a chrome trim, sets itself apart from this.

Maximum aerodynamic efficiency with a cW-Value from 0,23

The EQS 53 4MATIC + achieves a very good drag coefficient from 0,23. The aerodynamic fine-tuning ensures maximum efficiency, especially when driving dynamically at high speeds. To achieve this, the aero specialists at AMG carried out a large number of wind tunnel and flow tests and optimized both the basic shape and some design features. These include:

  • Front splitter in high-gloss black with chrome trim as well as flics and fins on the air inlets, with air curtains on the left and right in high-gloss black with chrome trim
  • AMG side skirts in high-gloss black
  • Rear apron in body color with aerodynamically optimized diffuser with six longitudinal fins
  • Larger rear spoiler (compared to the AMG Line), to improve the driving dynamics: the rear lift is reduced without increasing the air resistance
  • AMG light-alloy wheels in aero or heritage design in 21 or 22-inch dimensions; all wheels have been aerodynamically optimized

The side air inlets contribute to the efficiency of the vehicle: the air curtain effect is used to concentrate the air flow and expel it at high speed in front of the front wheels. In this way, the front wheels are aerodynamically shielded, which reduces air resistance and thus has a positive effect on the range.

Interior design with a particularly sporty note

The style-defining elements of AMG also dominate the interior. Here the EQS 53 4MATIC + offers a sporty ambience, thanks to AMG seats with individual graphics and special seat covers in ARTICO man-made leather with MICROCUT microfiber and red contrasting topstitching. Alternatively, seat covers in nappa leather are available on request, also with AMG-specific seat graphics.

There are also numerous other details that underline the unique style of the interior:

Hyperscreen with AMG-specific functions and displays for the MBUX infotainment system

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + is equipped with the innovative MBUX Hyperscreen as standard. This large, curved screen unit extends from A-pillar to A-pillar. Three screens sit under a cover glass and visually merge. With adaptive software, MBUX adapts completely to its users and offers them personalized suggestions for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. With the so-called zero-layer, the most important applications are always shown situationally and in relation to the context on the top level in the field of vision. In Europe and China, dynamic content is allowed on the front passenger display even while driving. There is no limit to the number of ways you can watch films, text messages or presentations and surf the Internet. This is made possible by the so-called "fade-out function", which prevents the driver from seeing the content.

Compared to the sister models from Mercedes-EQ, MBUX offers a number of additional functions in the EQS 53 4MATIC + that emphasize the performance character of the sporty top model. This applies in particular to the independent displays in the instrument cluster as well as the multimedia display and the head-up display. The corresponding direct access button in the center console enables quick access to the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs.

The optionally available AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package combines driving dynamics extras - including the powerful boost for the RACE START and the increase in the maximum speed to 250 km / h - with the emotional AMG sound experience "Performance". The latter ensures an unmistakable sound experience in the three selectable levels "Balanced", "Sport" and "Powerful". The intensity of the acoustic setup is based on the current driving status and the selected driving program. Sounds specially composed for the sound world of performance - for example for charging or infotainment functions - round off the AMG experience.

The driving dynamics keep what the sound promises: with the right temperature and charge level, the maximum power and torque for the RACE START can be briefly increased. The Mercedes-AMG EQS 0 100MATIC + then only needs 53 seconds to sprint from 4 to 3,4 km / h. The bass actuator and loudspeakers in the vehicle make the power of the electric motors clear even when the vehicle is stationary and deliver an emotionally charged soundtrack for high acceleration. The AMG-specific graphics in the displays also underline the driving performance optically. The AMG Sound Experience, outside and inside, can also be deactivated at any time via the settings of the multimedia system.

More options for even more dynamism

Numerous AMG options reinforce the dynamic impression on request. These include design features such as the AMG Night Package Dark Chrome, red brake callipers, AMG carbon-fiber trim and AMG seat covers in nappa leather with specific seat graphics. The high-performance electric sedan can also be further refined in terms of driving dynamics, for example with appropriate hardware such as the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system. There is also a choice of aerodynamically optimized AMG light-alloy wheels in 21- and 22-inch dimensions.

AMG TRACK PACE, the virtual race engineer, is also available as an option: The software is part of the MBUX infotainment system and continuously records more than 80 vehicle-specific data (e.g. speed, acceleration) while driving on a racetrack, for example. In addition, there is the display of lap and sector times as well as the difference to the reference time. Because certain display elements light up in green or red, the driver can see from the corner of his eye without reading numbers whether he is currently faster or slower than the best time. The data is shown on the multimedia display, the instrument cluster and the optional head-up display.

Sustainable use of electricity thanks to Mercedes me Charge

With Mercedes me Charge, customers have always been charging green at every public charging station throughout Europe since 2021. High-quality guarantees of origin ensure that as much green electricity from renewable energies is fed into the grid as is withdrawn via Mercedes me Charge. In the first three years after purchasing an EQS 53 4MATIC +, there is no basic fee for Mercedes me Charge and therefore Green Charging for customers. Another advantage is IONITY Unlimited: All European EQS customers can use the IONITY fast charging network for one year free of charge via Mercedes me Charge. The EQS is particularly easy to charge with the new Plug & Charge function.

Mercedes me Charge is currently the largest charging network in the world: it currently has more than 500.000 AC and DC charging points in 31 countries, including over 200.000 in Europe. It also includes the 336 fast charging stations of the IONITY fast charging network co-founded by Mercedes-Benz. In addition, the functionality of Mercedes me Charge in MBUX has been expanded to include functions such as filtering and forecasting the availability of charging stations.

The Mercedes me app has offered many improved and new functions since the last revision. This includes the filter option, which enables the charging points to be sorted according to criteria such as availability or charging capacity. The app now also shows how much the respective charging station is likely to be used over the course of the day on the basis of a probability calculation.

Predictive route planning and efficient driving with Electric Intelligence

When navigating with Electric Intelligence, the name says it all. Because it plans the fastest and most comfortable route, including charging stops, based on numerous factors and reacts dynamically to traffic jams or a change in driving style, for example. Electric Intelligence predictively plans a fast and comfortable route including charging stops based on numerous factors, for example the calculated energy requirement. The system includes all relevant data in the calculation, from topography and route to driving speed to heating and cooling requirements.

With Electric Intelligence, the EQS 53 also reacts dynamically to the traffic situation on the planned route. The AMG records traffic jams and closures as well as changes in energy demand. For the calculation, the system uses information from the cloud, which it combines with onboard data. The planned route can be edited individually. For example, the customer can set the additional reserve at the destination and at the charging station (SoC, State of Charge) - ten percent SoC is standard. If the "Load at destination" function is selected, the set reserve may not be exceeded until the destination. MBUX indicates whether the existing battery capacity is sufficient to be able to drive back to the starting point without charging.

Further options for individual route planning:

  • The route calculation prefers manually added charging stations along the route
  • The driver can exclude suggested charging stations
  • Calculation of the expected charging costs per charging stop

If there is a risk of not reaching the destination or the charging station with the set settings, thanks to the "active range monitoring", MBUX informs you in good time with the instruction to activate the ECO driving functions.

Comprehensive protection concept: the battery is crash-protected in the underbody

The battery sits in a crash-protected area in the underbody, embedded in the shell structure including an extruded aluminum profile on the side. During extrusion, a heated block of metal pushes through the nozzles and turns into an endless profile, which is then cut to fit. In this way, highly complex profiles that are precisely tailored to the requirements are possible. The housing with energy-absorbing structures on the front and on the side as well as a rigid, double-walled base plate provides additional protection for the modules.

Comprehensive crash and component tests have been part of the standard procedure at Mercedes-Benz for decades, the level is recognized to be high - the internal requirements are often significantly stricter than the legislative requirements. The company also attaches great importance to the best possible protection when it comes to batteries. The test criteria include the battery behavior in the event of shock loads and the ingress of foreign bodies. Overheating and overcharging are also important parts of the tests.

In addition, there is a separate, multi-level security system for everyday operation. This includes, for example, temperature, voltage or insulation monitoring as a continuously monitoring safety system. If an error occurs, the battery switches off. Crash monitoring while stationary (during DC charging) is also standard.

Sustainability in production and materials

The roof of Factory 56, the AMG EQS production facility, is equipped with 12.000 photovoltaic modules. These have a maximum output of around 5.000 kWp and can thus cover around 30 percent of the factory's energy requirements on an annual average. Overall, the energy requirement is reduced by 25 percent compared to other assembly halls. The bottom line is that Factory 56 is a zero carbon factory - completely CO2-neutral. 40 percent of the roof area of ​​Factory 56 is green, and recycled concrete was used for the first time in the front building. The production of the highly complex lithium-ion batteries at the Hedelfingen plant, part of the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim site, will take place from 2022 CO2-neutral. As part of strategic partnerships, Mercedes-Benz also purchased CO2-neutral manufactured battery cells agreed.

The components, some of which are made from resource-saving materials (recycled and renewable raw materials), weigh over 80 kilograms. A new thread made of regenerated nylon is sewn into the floor coverings of the fully electric AMG model. One ton of this yarn saves over 6,5 tons of CO2 compared to new goods. The steel for the body consists of 80 percent secondary steel, most of which is obtained from recycled steel scrap.

After being used in the vehicle, batteries can have a second life: for example in an energy storage device from Mercedes-Benz Energy GmbH. Together with its partners, the company has already brought three large storage systems with a total of around 50 MWh of energy from automotive battery systems into the German power grid. The first 2nd-life battery storage went online in October 2016 in Lünen, Westphalia.
