When Aston Martin returns to the FIA Formula One World Championship® later this month, the car manufacturer will have more than two Grand Prix participants on the starting grid of the Formula 1® Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2021: for the first time in history of the sport, the official Formula 1® safety and medical cars will also wear the famous wings of the British luxury brand.
For the demanding task of intervening in the course of an event with the fastest racing cars in the world and controlling the speed, a specially equipped version of the Aston Martin Vantage was developed - the most powerful Vantage in the range. The vehicle was developed by an experienced team at Aston Martin's headquarters in Gaydon and is characterized by significant improvements to the chassis and aerodynamics. With just a few additional modifications to meet FIA regulations, the new Safety Car is the pinnacle of Vantage performance.

The Aston Martin DBX, the critically acclaimed first SUV of the brand, will also take on the role of an official Formula 1® medical car and demonstrate its full power and excellent driving behavior when it comes to the rescue in an emergency.
Aston Martin Vantage - An Official Formula 1® Safety Car
The Aston Martin, driven by FIA-appointed driver Bernd Mayländer (Germany), who has been behind the wheel of the F1® Safety Car for over twenty years, will be on standby in the pit lane throughout the race.
When used by the race management in bad weather or an accident, the former racing driver and his co-driver Richard Darker (United Kingdom) head out onto the track to safely control the pace, neutralize the action and let it down To enable circuit officials to safely handle any incident.
The tire temperatures in Formula 1® can drop if the cars are traveling at a sub-optimal speed. That is why fast lap times are essential for the official Formula 1® Safety Car. This responsibility led Aston Martin Lagonda CEO Tobias Moers to task the engineering team with further developing the already sporty Vantage, with a focus on improved track performance and faster lap times.
The result? The power has been increased by 25 hp to 535 hp, which is supplied by a 4-liter twin-turbo V8, which offers remarkable performance and accelerates from 3,5 to 0 km / h in just 100 seconds. The peak torque of 685 Nm remains the same, but is now held longer. Additional work on the transmission gives the driver an improved feeling of directness, precision and control when shifting up and down. The vaned radiator grille in conjunction with a new front splitter generates 155,6 kg of downforce at 200 km / h; that's over 60 kg more than the standard Vantage produces at the same speed.
Modifications to the suspension, steering and dampers were also made, with additional fine-tuning work on the underbody stiffener to increase the rigidity of the front structure. All this, together with a comprehensive aero kit and a switch to tires with a lower profile, ensure that the Aston Martin Vantage, as the official F1® Safety Car, has all the requirements to survive on a Formula 1® track.

Aston Martin is known worldwide for its spectacular successes in sports car racing, most recently the multi-class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year, which helped become FIA GT World Endurance Manufacturers' Champion. The technical developments resulting from these successes have contributed to the systems used in the F1® Safety Car. The unique requirements for a safety car mean that the vehicle must be able to return from top speeds to idle in the pit lane without needing a cooling lap. Therefore, a reliable and robust thermal management system is a key element in its performance. Aston Martin has already developed a cooling system that has proven itself under extreme conditions and temperatures for the multiple championship winner, the Vantage GT4 racing car, and has transferred this technology to the safety car along with additional ventilation openings in the bonnet to support cooling.
Since the Safety Car runs on standard Pirelli road tires, it is equipped with the same carbon-ceramic brakes as the standard Vantage, with additional brake channels hidden in the front grille to aid cooling.
The safety car corresponds to the racing car of the Aston Martin Cognizant Formula 1® team with a completely new paint job, 2021 Aston Martin Racing Green, which was specially developed to celebrate the return of the brand to Formula 1® after more than 60 years. A trim strip in Lime Essence highlights the front splitter; a color that is synonymous with Aston Martin's successful racing and was last used on the hugely successful Vantage, which competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Otherwise, the F1® Safety Car is characterized by its distinctive FIA Safety Car paintwork, side-mounted radio antennas, an LED license plate on the rear and an LED light strip developed by Aston Martin on the roof.

The light bar sits on a carbon fiber base that protrudes over the roof line. The aerodynamic profile is designed in such a way that it offers the lowest possible resistance and at the same time enables an optimized air flow to the raised rear wing. Bright orange lights on the outer edges of the light bar come on when the official Formula 1® safety car drives onto the track. A centrally positioned yellow flashing light lights up when the safety car is in position in front of the leader of the race - as a sign that nobody is allowed to overtake; two centrally positioned green lights come on when it is safe for the F1® cars to overtake.
The headlights and taillights also flash to ensure that the vehicle is safely deployed. The rear license plate reads “Safety Car” and it is illuminated by LEDs so that it can be easily seen by vehicles behind in all weather conditions. A rear-facing camera is also attached to the light bar, which feeds a live image into a second rear-view mirror inside the driver's cab so that the front passenger can monitor all activities in the rear area.
In addition, the standard seats in the cabin have been replaced by FIA-approved racing seats with 6-point seat belts, as can also be found in the vehicles of the F1® team. There are two screens mounted on the dashboard that provide the driver and front passenger with a live television broadcast and a variety of customizable information displays, including live lap times and track position of all active racing cars. The center console has been significantly modified. The rotary switch has been moved in place of the cup holder and in its place is a switch control system that allows various actions to be performed, such as: B. the activation of the siren, the radio communication and the control of the LEDs of the light bar.
The "Marshalling System" is integrated into the instrument cluster and the dashboard and enables both the driver and the front passenger to see which flag color is shown on the route by lighting up the LED light of the same color. This corresponds to the system that is also present in all F1® team vehicles in accordance with regulations. In addition, TV cameras are mounted on and in the driver's cab that provide live TV images.

Aston Martin DBX - An Official Formula 1 ® Medical Car
The Aston Martin DBX will also function as the official Formula 1® medical car this season, driven by Alan van der Merwe (41, South Africa). Like the Safety Car, the Medical Car can also be recognized by the 2021 Aston Martin Racing Green paintwork with accents in Lime Green - as well as by the eye-catching FIA Medical Car paintwork, the LED number plate on the rear and the LED light strip on the roof sitting on the roof rails.
Driven by the 4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which is also used in the DB11 and Vantage, the DBX offers an impressive output of 550 hp and a torque of 700 Nm, which the DBX from 4,5 to 0 km / h catapulted and enables a top speed of 100 km / h. All of this ensures that the FIA's medical team can respond effectively to an emergency. With a sound that is unmistakably Aston Martin, the active exhaust system ensures that the DBX is not only seen but also heard.
The official Formula 1® Medical Car has to carry a considerable amount of equipment, including a large medical bag, defibrillator, two fire extinguishers and a combustion kit - and the DBX is more than well equipped with 632 liters of trunk space.
While the interior is fully equivalent to a production vehicle, the middle rear seat has been removed and the remaining four seats have been replaced with sports bucket seats, each with a 6-point seat belt. These offer seats for the driver, Alan van der Merwe and Dr. Ian Roberts - the FIA Formula 1® Medical Response Coordinator - as well as a local doctor, with one seat free in case a racer has to be driven back into the pit lane in an incident. Similar to the safety car, two screens were mounted on the dashboard to provide live images of the race. An additional screen is used to read biometric live data, which are supplied by the technology in the driver's gloves and which, in the event of an accident, provide important information about their state of health. The "Marshalling System" and the rearview mirror camera display were also built into the medical car.
The development of the official Formula 1® safety car and the official Formula 1® medical car was taken over by the Aston Martin engineering team. Both vehicles have undergone extensive testing, including high-speed durability testing and aggressive driving on the racetrack at the Aston Martin Silverstone facility. A total of almost 15.000 km were covered. The vehicles were also tested in a test bench climate chamber to ensure that they deliver optimal performance under all racing conditions.
