It's that time again! Audi Sport is putting a concept car on the wheels that amazes the professional world. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the quattro drive, the brand new Audi RS6 GTO (apprentice project AP20), which pays tribute to the legendary Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO, was born from an idea of the Audi trainees at the Neckarsulm site. We find the combination shape a bit unusual, as the original racing car was a real racer in a limousine dress, but there has been no RS6 as a limousine since the C6. Since the C7, the top model of the A6 series has only been offered as an Avant. It was therefore almost clear that the company was not going back to tradition and presenting the RS6 GTO to the public as an avant model (C8) and not as a classic sedan.
Design with lots of racing car details
Starting with the paintwork, Audi Sport in Neckarsulm attached great importance to attention to detail when it came to producing the concept car as a homage to the Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO. So in addition to the color combination, there were also classic ones turbofans installed with "quattro" lettering, and a large roof spoiler, which is painted completely in red, also found its way to the vehicle. The huge grill, reminiscent of a fish's mouth, is also part of the scope, as are various GTO logos, which are also emblazoned in red on the car.
You have to give the trainees absolute respect at this point and give them great praise for putting this vehicle on wheels to pay homage to the beginnings of the four-wheel drive era at Audi. Above all, the two upper arm-thick sidepipes, which are much better integrated than the two hoses that hung out from the side of the original Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO, are the design highlight of the study. It will be interesting to see how long it will be before the first Audi tuners start installing certain elements of the concept car in order to contribute to the homage to the Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO.
The attention to detail is also visible in the interior.
Of course, you can also tell in the interior that the trainees at the Neckarsulm site went to great lengths when it came to designing the interior of the concept car. Classic Recaro sports seats with red Schroth harness belts are typical of racing cars of that time, and that too Roll cage, which is installed instead of the rear seat bench, was perfectly color-coordinated with the paintwork of the body. Thus the black-red-gray color scheme is also finding its way into the interior.

According to our information, the RS6 GTO has the familiar 4-liter V8 TFSI engine, but now with 720 hp. This means that this concept car sprints from standstill to 3,1 km / h in an amazing 100 seconds, and propulsion only ends at 310 kilometers per hour. This should be enough to deliver a decent performance on the racetrack as well, so as not only to be based on the big model visually.
Unfortunately no small series is planned.
Many Audi fans would of course now wish that there would be a limited small series of the car, as was the case in 1983 with the legendary Audi Sport Quattro rally car, which was only built 220 times and at 195.000 D-Marks at the time was twice as expensive as a Porsche Turbo. So far, however, there are no plans for this, which is why we can only put you off with our picture gallery of the concept car, which is attached to the article.
