Luxury and plenty of steam - the 571 PS Audi S8 TFSI

The new Audi S8 impresses beyond progressive luxury as a dynamic athlete and sharpens its reputation as a reference for Vorsprung durch Technik with innovative suspension systems. Its 4.0 TFSI, an eight-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine, delivers 420 kW (571 PS) and delivers lavish 800 Nm of torque (fuel economy combined in l / 100 km: 11,3 - 11,4 *; CO2 emission combined g / km: 258 - 260 * ). In conjunction with the MHEV technology, the symbiosis of efficiency and comfort as well as inspiring performance succeeds. The combination of forward-looking active suspension, dynamic all-wheel steering and quattro drive with sports differential ensures exceptional driving dynamics ex works. With specific design elements, the new Audi S8 provides the answer to how the high-quality luxury sedan accurately puts sporting elegance in the limelight.

Impressive performance: the drive

As a V8 engine with mild hybrid technology, the high-performance unit in the Audi S8 offers not only maximum smoothness, but also the power of 420 kW (571 HP), 800 Nm torque (fuel consumption combined in l / 100 km: 11,3 - 11,4 *; CO2 emission combined g / km: 258 - 260 *) and, thanks to Biturbo, the certainty of being able to call in the required performance in every situation. The top speed is, electronically limited, 250 km / h, from zero to 100 km / h pass just 3,8 seconds. The aluminum crankcase with an iron coating of the cylinder linings shines with smooth running thanks to low friction. Automatically controlled flaps in the exhaust system emphasize the impressive sound experience. Emotion and driving performance on sports car level are combined with comfort and efficiency.

The mild hybrid system (MHEV) contributes sustainably to reducing consumption. Its 48 V-belt starter generator and additional lithium-ion battery allow sailing with the engine off, fast re-start and extended start-stop range. This saves up to 0,8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometer in everyday use. Additional efficiency is provided by the cylinder on demand system, which means that individual cylinders are switched off in low-load operating situations. The Active Noise Cancellation via the on-board sound system eliminates disturbing noise in the interior and thus ensures maximum comfort.

Driving dynamics: Active suspension, dynamic four-wheel steering and quattro with sports differential

The unique combination of innovative suspension components enables the flagship to display the entire range - from the velvety rolling of a luxury sedan to the dynamic and taut handling of a sports car.

As standard, the forward-looking active chassis is used in the new S8. The high-tech system, which works with the air suspension, can pull up or down each wheel separately via electromechanical actuators. This makes it possible for the first time to actively regulate the position of the body in any driving situation and thereby greatly reduce the roll or dive when accelerating or braking. Thanks to the front camera, which detects larger bumps, the control is predictive. The new Audi S8 is either a highly comfortable luxury sedan or a true dynamizer - just as the driver sets it: the Audi drive select system has five modes available. A new feature is the "comfort +" mode. Here, even cornering becomes a comfort experience: in the curves, the body tilts inwards by up to 3 degrees, thereby reducing the lateral acceleration that acts on the occupants. In "dynamic" mode, the S8 steers precisely, with fast cornering, the maximum roll angle is only about 2,5 degrees. The normal chassis is about 5 degrees. The situation-appropriate distribution of the rolling moments allows a neutral or even minimally oversteering self-steering behavior. Even when the S8 is stationary, the position of its bodywork can be changed: when the door handle is pressed, it quickly lifts up to 50 mm - making it even easier and more convenient to get into the car.

The limits of the physically possible are re-explored in the Audi S8 by dynamic four-wheel steering. It makes it possible to independently adjust the steering angles at the front and rear axles. It combines a direct, sporty steering response at low and medium speeds with sovereign driving stability on the highway and a compact turning circle - and thus resolves an old conflict of goals. The sport differential actively shifts the moments between the rear wheels during fast cornering. When turning or accelerating in the curve, they are predominantly steered to the outside wheel. Thus, the car is literally pressed into the curve and counteracted already in the approach of a tendency to understeer. In the case of oversteer, the sports differential on the rear axle shifts the drive torque to the inside wheel and stabilizes the S8. The dynamic all-wheel steering and the sport differential are just as standard as the forward-looking active suspension on board. The interaction of these systems is unique in the competition and ensures a sovereign-sporty driving dynamics in all situations. On request, the customer receives high-performance brake discs made of carbon fiber ceramic. Its diameter is 420 millimeters at the front axle and 370 millimeters at the rear axle. The ceramic brake discs are ventilated and wear-resistant. Including the brake calipers, the ceramic brake system is 9,6 kilograms lighter than the standard brake system with brake discs made of gray cast iron. The front calipers each have ten brake pistons.

Sporty elegance staged to the point: the design

In the new Audi S8, the progressive, flowing, elegant exterior design of the series gains new accents. Striking design elements in the interior and exterior sharpen the sporty character. For the 5,18 meter long sports sedan wheels with up to 21 inch diameter are available. Details on the front bumper, side skirts and exterior mirror housings as well as the two S-typical oval twin tailpipes of the exhaust system emphasize the sporty, progressive character of the car. In addition, optional "optics package black" can be selected: Here are all chrome heights - except for the tailpipe trims - executed in high-gloss black. Customers can choose from nine high-quality color and design worlds, including the Audi design selection pastelsilver, in the generously proportioned interior, which conveys the relaxed atmosphere of a luxurious lounge.

Here, the upper trim strip - new and exclusively available in the Audi S8 - consists of "Carbon Vector" and impresses with its special 3D depth effect. Directly below is a decorative strip of dark brushed matt aluminum. When it comes to light, the range extends to the HD Matrix LED headlamps with Audi laser light and OLED rear lights. In the major markets China, USA, Canada and South Korea, the Audi S8 will be offered for the first time and only with a long wheelbase. The increase in vehicle length and height means a significant increase in comfort for occupants due to increased head and legroom.

Progressive and state-of-the-art: the equipment

The new Audi S8 reflects in every detail its character as a sporty luxury model. A special highlight are the standard comfort individual contour seats in sports optics. They have a versatile electrical setting, pneumatically adjustable cheeks and three-stage heating. In addition, optional, ventilation and massage functions. Customers can choose between the top quality leather Valcona and unique. The rear seats also offer numerous features for excellent comfort and ensure a first-class atmosphere in the Audi S8.

The 38 driver assistance systems that Audi supplies for the new S8 are divided into the "city" and "tour" packages. Out of the extensive portfolio of assistance systems, the adaptive driving assistant stands out - the central system in the "Tour" package. The adaptive driving assistant combines the functions of adaptive cruise control, congestion assist and guidance. In conjunction with the predictive efficiency assistant, the adaptive driving assistant delays and accelerates the Audi S8 in a forward-looking manner. In the "City" assistance package, Audi pre sense side completes the systems pre sense front and pre sense rear 360 °: If the system detects an imminent side impact, it can quickly lift the body up to 80 millimeters in conjunction with the forward-looking active suspension , As a result, the sill is placed in a better position to reduce the impact energy. This reduces possible consequences of accidents for the occupants.

The brain behind the driver assistance systems in the new S8 is a high-performance unit, the central driver assistance control unit (zFAS). It uses the data provided by the sensors to permanently create a differentiated model of the vehicle environment. Fully equipped with five radar sensors, six cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors and a laser scanner on board.

Digital and intelligent: operation and networking

The new Audi S8 delivers a progressive technology experience with new digital services and state-of-the-art networking. The MMI touch response operating concept is fully digital; the driver controls almost all functions via two large displays. Alternatively, he can use the natural language control, where he can formulate his questions and commands almost completely free. The answers come either from the onboard stored information or from the cloud. On request, Amazon's cloud-based voice service Alexa is on board. All the driving-relevant displays appear in the Audi virtual cockpit, which can be switched over into two views: While the tachometer and speedometer in driving mode are shown as large round instruments, the infotainment mode puts the card in the center. Both views appear S-specific with red graphic details. In addition, a special "S-Performance" layout can be selected in the MMI for the Audi virtual cockpit, in which the tachometer takes center stage as an angular graph and performance and torque appear as percentages. On request, a head-up display projects important information onto the windshield.

The MMI navigation plus serves as the infotainment and media center in the new S8. In addition to the integration of the Amazon Alexa voice service, the wide range of Audi connect products also includes several car-to-X services that use the swarm intelligence of the Audi fleet. "Traffic light information" is also being added, which Audi is gradually offering in selected European cities. As it is networked with the city's infrastructure, the car receives information from the central traffic light computer via a server so that the driver can choose his pace to suit the next green phase. An individual speed recommendation and the remaining time until the next green phase appear in the Audi virtual cockpit if the driver is already waiting at a red light. In this way, the system contributes to a predictive, efficient driving style and promotes a steady flow of traffic. The services “online traffic sign information”, “hazard information” and “on-street parking” round off the range of Car-to-X services. The myAudi app networks the car with the customer's smartphone and makes it possible to conveniently send destinations to the vehicle from the couch. The Audi smartphone interface brings Android Auto and wireless Apple Car Play on board. High-end components such as the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System with 3D sound and the Audi phone box complete the infotainment program in the new S8.
