It's the final sprint on the way to the front row. The final phase of the series development process for the new edition of the BMW 2 Series Coupé begins with the driving dynamics testing and tuning of your drive and chassis systems under racetrack conditions. The two-door model has numerous ingredients that are typical of the brand and unique in the premium compact segment for a sporty and emotionally charged driving experience, which are carefully coordinated during the test drives. With them, he is reinforcing his claim to pole position in his class more than ever. The unique selling points of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé in the competitive environment include the rear-wheel drive architecture, an extremely powerful in-line six-cylinder engine, the axle load distribution, which is almost 50:50, an extremely torsionally rigid body and chassis technology that is consistently designed for agility and dynamism.

Sporty driving pleasure in the tradition of the BMW 2002.

The new BMW 2 Series Coupé, whose production will begin in late summer 2021, is uncompromisingly designed for sporty driving pleasure. It is thus continuing the tradition of the brand's particularly active, compact and powerful two-door model, which has existed since the legendary BMW 2002, in a modern interpretation. In terms of power delivery, traction, cornering dynamics and precision in handling, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé meets the needs of particularly demanding customers who are enthusiastic about unadulterated sportiness in a compact premium automobile.

In the development process of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé, the test drives and set-up drives on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring serve as the ultimate test of maturity for wheel suspension, suspension and damping, steering and braking system. In addition, tests on public country roads around Munich and on the BMW Group test site in Maisach ensure that the dynamic driving qualities of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé can also be experienced in everyday traffic and under different road conditions. With the integrated application of all drive and chassis systems, the development and test engineers ensure that the performance characteristics of the engine go hand in hand with precisely controllable handling in every situation, fascinating cornering dynamics, optimized traction under all weather and road conditions and perfectly balanced driving comfort . At the same time, the fine-tuning optimizes the self-steering behavior and the dynamics of the build-up of lateral acceleration forces, so that the power transmission to the rear wheels, which is unique in the segment of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé, can be used for sporty, ambitious cornering through to confidently controllable drift maneuvers.

BMW M Automobil at the top of the model range.

The focus of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé on maximum driving dynamics in the segment is particularly consistently embodied by a BMW M automobile at the top of the model range. The top model BMW M240i xDrive Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 8,2 l / 100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 186 g / km; provisional value according to WLTP) draws its drive torque from an extremely powerful inline six-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The drive, which is equally responsive and easy-revving, generates a maximum output of 275 kW / 374 hp and is combined with an 8-speed Steptronic sport transmission. The BMW M automobile brings its power to the road via the intelligent all-wheel drive BMW xDrive. The rear-wheel-oriented design of the system ensures the driving pleasure typical of the brand, combined with a demand-based distribution of power even in adverse road and weather conditions.

The driving dynamics tests also on the Nürburgring offer ideal opportunities to refine the interaction of the all-wheel drive system with the M sport differential in the rear axle drive. With a fully variable locking effect generated by an electric motor, it helps the new BMW 2 Series Coupé achieve cornering behavior that is optimized in terms of traction and driving stability. The targeted distribution of power between the rear wheels enables significantly higher lateral acceleration values and also a noticeable increase in dynamics when accelerating at the exit of a curve.

Vehicle concept consistently designed for dynamism.

Regardless of the engine, all model variants of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé benefit from a particularly torsion-resistant body structure. The static torsional rigidity has been increased by around 12 percent compared to the previous model through the use of driving dynamics struts in the rear of the vehicle and contributes to the exceptionally high agility of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé. In addition, the vehicle concept, which is consistently designed for driving dynamics, includes a significantly increased track width on the front and rear axles, which effectively reduces the tendency to roll and the fluctuations in wheel load when cornering in a sporty manner.

All model variants of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé are also equipped with stroke-dependent dampers as standard, the fine-tuning of which results in a noticeably optimized balance between sportiness and driving comfort as part of driving dynamics testing. Their sensitive response to slight bumps in the road ensures comfortable vibration compensation. When driving over large bumps, the body's movements are controlled by correspondingly higher damping forces. An Adaptive M suspension is available as an option for the new BMW 2 Series Coupé. Its electronically controlled dampers offer the option of activating the appropriate map for both sporty and comfort-oriented driving.

Precise steering, optimized aerodynamic properties.

The new BMW 2 Series Coupé is characterized by its easily controllable handling characteristics, even in highly dynamic driving situations. In addition to the powerful and precisely controllable brakes, the precise steering also shapes the driving behavior of the two-door car. In addition to the balanced axle load distribution between the front and rear wheels, the model-specific application of the steering and the particularly high connection rigidity of the support bearings on the front axle contribute to this. The optional variable sport steering available for the new BMW 2 Series Coupé combines further optimized precision when approaching bends with reduced steering effort when parking and maneuvering.

In the body design of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé, it is not just the brand's modern, particularly clear and reduced design language that has left its mark. Only recognizable at second glance, but immediately noticeable during the high-speed test drives on the Nürburgring, are the measures that help the BMW M automobile in particular to achieve optimized aerodynamic properties. In addition to a model-specific front spoiler lip, front splitters and air curtains, air baffles, a tank and a rear axle cover as well as the flow-oriented contour of the driving dynamics struts in the underbody ensure that the lift on the front axle has been reduced by 50 percent compared to the previous model.
