The legendary BMW Junior Team will be revived in 2020. In 1977, the then managing director of BMW Motorsport GmbH, Jochen Neerpasch, had the idea of professionally promoting the three motorsport talents Eddie Cheever, Marc Surer and Manfred Winkelhock and thus enabling them to enter the highest classes of racing. More than 40 years later, the new generation of Dan Harper, Max Hesse and Neil Verhagen follow in their footsteps. As the new BMW Junior Team, they will contest their races on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Markus Flasch, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH, handed over three brand new BMW M vehicles to the trio so that they can enjoy M Power not only on the racetrack, but also in everyday life. Harper, Hesse and Verhagen will be driving a BMW M2 Competition, a BMW M3 Sedan and a BMW M4 Coupé in the future.

the strongest letter in the world

"We are happy that the three boys as BMW Junior Team represent BMW M with their speed and their fresh demeanor“Said Flasch during the handover at BMW M GmbH in Garching. "From now on they are not only on the race track with the strongest letter in the world, but also on the road. After the BMW Junior Team already wears the three M colors in its racing overalls, it was clear to us that they also had to get M vehicles as company cars. I think they go together perfectly and wish Dan Harper, Max Hesse and Neil Verhagen a lot of fun with it."

Who doesn't dream of an "M"?

Neerpasch, who in 1977 as managing director of BMW Motorsport GmbH brought the promotion of young talents to a professional level for the first time and founded the original BMW Junior Team, is also a mentor for the new generation. He was also present at the vehicle handover and said: "At that time, we were the first manufacturer to focus on the human-machine system and ensure that racing drivers are physically and medically up to their job in the racing car. The first BMW Junior Team at that time proved at a very high level that they can learn together much faster than anyone can do it on their own. We are trying the same thing again more than 40 years later - and the strong first races on the Nordschleife have given hope that we could be similarly successful with Dan Harper, Max Hesse and Neil Verhagen."Regarding his experience with BMW M vehicles, Neerpasch said:"For me, M vehicles are the best BMW vehicles. You can use it to drive at full speed on the Nordschleife and then comfortably drive home on public roads. How many vehicles are there that can do this? I love these cars."

"The M vehicles are just great ”

Harper said at the vehicle handover: “From the first day I was very keen to be able to drive an M vehicle. It is fantastic that the time has come."Verhagen said:"The M vehicles are just great. Now being able to be on the road as well as on the Nordschleife with it is really cool."Hesse added:"It is particularly good that we can also train on the Nordschleife with the M vehicles. We are still new to this track, so every lap that we can do there apart from the race weekends is very valuable."

M test center at the Nürburgring as a base

There is another connection between the BMW M GmbH and the BMW Junior Team, because the trio uses the M Test Center at the Nürburgring as a base for their training. The foyer of the test center was redesigned so that the juniors can complete their mental training there and drive in their high-tech racing simulators. "When our colleagues at BMW Motorsport came up with the idea of hosting the BMW Junior Team in our test center, we immediately said yes“Said Dirk Häcker, Head of Development M Automobile and BMW Individual and at the same time responsible for the M Test Center. "The redesign of the foyer in the colors of the BMW Junior Team and the BMW M vehicle directly behind the glass front make the M Test Center an eye-catcher in Nürburg even more than it already is. I am sure that many fans and passers-by will take a curious look through our windows.“Häcker met the BMW Junior Team during a race weekend of the Nürburgring endurance series and got to know the young drivers. The same weekend, Harper and Verhagen celebrated their first victory in the BMW M240i Racing on the Nordschleife.
