BMW Group Research presents innovative concepts for cargo bikes and e-scooters!

In recent years, the concentration of traffic in many inner cities has increased sharply. The mobility needs of their residents remain high. As a premium provider of individual mobility, the BMW Group is actively helping to shape the liveable inner city of the future. The company also thinks about mobility beyond its own core business. In the past, the BMW Group has already presented innovative micromobility concepts to the public. B. the BMW Motorrad X2City, the Personal Mover Concept or the high street concept BMW Vision E³ Way. With the electrified “Concept DYNAMIC CARGO” bicycle and the “Concept CLEVER COMMUTE” e-scooter, the BMW Group's engineers are once again proving the unique transfer of expertise from the automotive sector to small vehicle concepts.

Concept DYNAMIC CARGO: Unimagined driving fun with maximum variability.

  • Compact, three-wheel cargo bike concept with high agility, flexible usage options and increased year-round suitability.
  • Variably usable loading area with innovative attachments for transporting loads and / or children as well as for leisure activities.

Bicycles can be used flexibly, are emission-free and are among the fastest and most efficient means of transport in inner-city areas. For many cyclists, however, rain, cold and slippery weather are usually reason enough to switch to public transport or the car. The same applies to transport needs that cannot be covered with a standard luggage rack, such as B. larger purchases or the transport of children. There is now a wide range of cargo bikes as a complementary alternative to using the car in urban areas. However, many cargo bike concepts are wider and, above all, longer than normal bicycles due to the requirements for transporting loads and / or children. In connection with the resulting additional weight and the possible payload, this leads to differently pronounced restrictions, in particular with regard to riding agility and handling compared to normal bicycles.

"It was our goal to develop a concept approach that maintains the agility and driving experience of a normal bicycle and at the same time adds innovative, safe transport options," says Jochen Karg, Head of Vehicle Concepts in the New Technologies and China Division of the BMW Group. "The" Concept DYNAMIC CARGO "is the first dynamic 'pick-up' cargo bike that combines driving pleasure with flexible use and increased year-round suitability."

The basis of the three-wheel “Concept DYNAMIC CARGO” is the front main frame, which tilts when cornering and which is connected to the rear of the vehicle via a swivel axis. This remains stable in every curve without any inclination on the road. Combined with an electrified drivetrain controlled only by the driver's pedaling impulse, the vehicle driven by the two rear wheels drives like a normal bicycle. The rigidly mounted, non-pivoting wheels on the rear axle enable - in addition to significantly increased driving stability in all weather conditions compared to two-wheel concepts - above all a flexible, pick-up-like transport platform. This can be modularly equipped with innovative attachments to take along for luggage and / or children. Many other use cases are possible thanks to the modular principle. Another advantage of the non-swiveling transport platform concept is the fact that the driver hardly notices the possible additional weight and all loads to be transported can thus be transported safely and stably. That guarantees driving pleasure.

The concept is rounded off by the option of using modular weather protection. In connection with the increased driving safety, which also pays off in unfavorable weather conditions, this makes getting around with the Concept DYNAMIC CARGO attractive all year round.

The BMW Group will not produce the Concept DYNAMIC CARGO itself, but is in talks with possible licensees.

Concept CLEVER COMMUTE: The perfect companion for the “last mile”.

  • Ergonomics suitable for everyday use and high driving stability with the smallest possible pack size
  • Real mobility mix: Problem-free integration of public transport sections on longer routes thanks to the innovative public transport mode
  • Ideal for Park & Ride: Minimal pack size for practical transport in the trunk

E-scooters have established themselves as a component in the urban mobility mix, primarily through sharing offers. They can be used flexibly, are emission-free and bring city dwellers to their destination particularly quickly on the short urban route - the so-called last mile. The supply of e-scooters for private ownership has so far developed comparatively slowly. Due to their size, robust and safely drivable concepts are hardly suitable for taking with you in public transport or your own car. In the case of small and portable models, on the other hand, driving stability suffers.

With the CLEVER COMMUTE concept, the BMW Group is introducing an e-scooter that can be conveniently folded for transport in public transport and / or in a car without compromising driving stability. In the so-called public transport mode, the running board is folded up to the side and the rear wheel is swiveled through the opening that has been created from below using a rotary axis. This mechanism significantly shortens the wheelbase of the CLEVER COMMUTE so that it can even be carried on an escalator without any problems. An important prerequisite if a trip with the subway is integrated on the route. Furthermore, it can also be moved in this state - like a hand luggage trolley - rolling on both wheels. In this mode, the CLEVER COMMUTE can give an electric boost with the wheel hub motor integrated in the front wheel, so that it can be pushed over ramps more easily. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the vehicle should be able to be carried free of charge in any public transport in this condition.

When fully collapsed, the CLEVER COMMUTE has a pack size that fits easily into small luggage compartments, or even fits several times into larger luggage compartments for a family outing. For vehicles of the BMW Group this means e.g. B. that the CLEVER COMMUTE fits lengthways into the trunk from the 3rd row upwards and crossways into the MINI trunk without having to flip the back seat.

The unique product characteristics of the CLEVER COMMUTE make it a versatile companion in the city, with which every route can be completed quickly, safely and relaxed. Its versatility makes it possible to travel really multimodally. The BMW Group will not produce the CLEVER COMMUTE concept itself, but is in talks with possible licensees. Both concepts are designed in such a way that a range of more than 20 kilometers can be achieved. Particularly important in the city: A removable battery can be charged in the apartment.
