20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

The new generation of BMW iDrive is leading the interaction between driver and vehicle into the digital future, in which numerous areas of life are becoming ever smarter. The reinterpretation of the operating system creates the prerequisites for the vehicle to take an active role in interaction with its occupants and thus to become a digital, intelligent and proactive partner for every situation. This creates a natural dialogue with the aim of aligning all functions controlled via BMW iDrive precisely and appropriately to the needs and wishes of the driver.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

The basis for the unique user experience is laid with the new BMW Operating System 8, a new generation of displays, controls and software as well as particularly powerful networking and data processing. The new iDrive is being rolled out successively in all vehicle classes. The technology will be used for the first time and this year in the BMW iX and then in the BMW i4.

BMW Operating System 8

With the ability to adapt to the individual needs and routines of the driver as well as to the respective situation, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is more than ever the central operating channel for human-machine interaction. In general, the operating system is designed with a clear focus on dialogic interaction using natural language and touch control of the BMW Curved Display. The new customer experience “Great Entrance Moments” also ensures an emotional connection between driver and vehicle outside the vehicle. It receives the driver and guides him into the vehicle with a well thought-out presentation. During the journey, the new My Modes create unique moments through an overall interplay of the most varied of functions, which result from a combination of vehicle properties and the interior ambience tailored to the respective situation.

The new BMW iDrive continuously processes a large number of self-generated data that is available online and transmitted from the BMW Group vehicle fleet in order to be able to implement the driver's wishes in a context-related manner. The BMW ID is the basis for even greater personalization. The system recognizes repetitive situations, learns and makes suggestions for activating functions accordingly. With the help of Remote Software Upgrade, the new BMW iDrive is regularly improved over-the-air, expanded with additional functions and always kept up to date.

Design approach and operating concept.

The purely electrically powered Sports Activity Vehicle BMW iX was developed from the inside out. The same applies to the user experience for the new BMW iDrive. The wishes of the vehicle occupants form the basis for how the user experience is designed in all its facets and for all the senses.

The progress in the field of digital design can also be seen in the design of a user interface that not only takes functional aspects into account, but also has a particularly clear and aesthetic appearance. The artistic implementation creates surprising moments, its graphic preparation on the displays is precisely designed down to the last pixel. The interaction between driver and vehicle becomes a unique experience by dissolving the boundaries between the digital and the analog world. The formal language of the digital design corresponds harmoniously with the geometric structures of the analog components of the new BMW design language. A distinctive feature is the clear, minimalist design that is evident both in the exterior and in the interior of the vehicle. It continues in the puristic and reduced design of the digital elements of the BMW iDrive.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

The most striking innovation in the field of physical components is the BMW Curved Display, which forms the link between the Info Display and the Control Display. The curved display embodies the traditional and brand-typical driver orientation in the cockpit design in a future-oriented interpretation. The BMW Curved Display is ergonomically aligned with the driver to make intuitive touch operation easier. In the new BMW Curved Display, the display areas of the 12,3-inch information display and the control display with a screen diagonal of 14,9 inches merge into a single display unit.

With the “act, locate and inform” principle, which achieves a clear distribution of information and avoids redundancies, the typical BMW driver orientation in cockpit design reaches a new level. The information relevant to the respective driving situation is pre-filtered for the driver and always presented where it can be grasped as quickly and easily as possible.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

The new BMW iDrive is systematically designed for preferential use of voice control and the touch function of the BMW Curved Display. The number of buttons and switches has been reduced by almost half. At the same time, control panels for relevant and frequently used basic functions have been retained where customers expect them. The control panels on the center console and the instrument panel have been designed completely new, strikingly clear and minimalist. The proven iDrive Controller is the central control element on the center console. The touch controller, designed for the BMW iX in a particularly high-quality glass look, is surrounded by a wreath painted in gold bronze.

The function of a digital character, which is available as a partner for a natural dialogue with the driver and front passenger, similar to an interpersonal relationship, is taken over by the further developed BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Graphical user interface.

With the next generation of the BMW iDrive, the newly developed BMW Operating System 8 has a new design language. Strong and distinctive graphics, modern colors, futuristic textures and shapes, bright light and the interplay of reflections create an impressive and immersive visual appearance. At the same time, the user interface is optimized to present the right amount of information in a simple and easily comprehensible manner at all times.

The information display in the driver's central visual axis impresses both with its generous display area and with distinctive shapes, dynamic light effects, a high level of color depth and modern worlds of color. All advertisements appear in a particularly high graphic resolution of 200 ppi.

The extensive customization options for the displays in the display area behind the steering wheel can be selected particularly quickly and conveniently using the function buttons on the steering wheel. The operating system in two axes enables pleasant vertical list navigation by turning and a menu change by tilting a button in the horizontal axis. Depending on personal preferences or the respective driving situation, the driver can switch between three layout types and different widgets in just a few operating steps using the thumb control. In the “Drive” layout, a dynamically adapting area in the center of the information display can be used to display individually selectable information. The “Focus” layout was designed for particularly dynamic driving situations.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

In the “Gallery” layout, on the other hand, the display of driving-relevant information is largely reduced in order to provide the maximum possible space for widget content. In this way, information about the currently used media source, the map display or the activities and suggested actions of the driver assistance systems can be displayed in more detail. The color-coordinated, three-dimensional animations, which are particularly dynamic thanks to the staged light reflections, give each of the three layouts an individual character.

In the large, horizontally stretched control display, the clear structure and the new arrangement logic of the widgets, which always provide a perfect overview of the information, immediately catch the eye. The widgets on the home screen are seamlessly lined up in a ribbon. The content in the widgets is reduced to the essential information and is displayed as a live image. Frequently used functions are displayed in the widgets and can thus be activated directly via touch control. The widgets displayed on the home screen and their order can be freely selected and configured. At the same time, widgets change depending on the context by means of seamless and fluid animations in order to display more or less information according to the situation.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

The newly designed media player is a particular aesthetic highlight. Particularly reduced to the essentials and with a simple arrangement, it impresses with the clarity of its design. An algorithm reads the color sample of the cover of the currently selected music track and transfers it in a dynamic color gradient to the entire display area of the media player.

BMW iDrive creates a personal relationship and a natural dialogue between people and vehicles.

With the new generation of BMW iDrive, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant also gains additional capabilities. In order to strengthen the personal relationship between the digital companion and the occupants of the vehicle, it is still possible to give the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant a self-chosen, individual name with which it can be called up.

When communicating between people, a significant part of the information is transported in a non-verbal way. The new visualization by means of flares in different sizes and brightnesses gives the assistant more space and additional possibilities of expression. This visual representation gives him a "face" in the sense of a clearly visible focus point and recognizable states of activity through the representation of gestures.

From a total of more than 100 design approaches, a form of visualization was selected based on an extensive catalog of requirements and evaluation that, in addition to a trustworthy and appealing appearance, also has the necessary dynamics to be able to express different states and actions non-verbally and at the same time in a human-like manner.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has also been functionally enhanced. Due to an increased number of underlying data and information, the digital assistant is not only more intelligent, but also enables it to act in a context-related manner. In his activities he can take into account the situation in the vehicle and its surroundings when it comes to when and how he communicates with the occupants.

The way and where the personal assistant appears, follows the Shy Tech design principle. If he is spoken to, he visualizes himself in a fluid and integrated animation and lies comfortably over the displays without covering up relevant information. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant also differentiates between who is addressing it and appears in the corresponding display area. A widget specially designed for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant enables quick access to further settings and suggestions.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

As part of the ongoing development of BMW iDrive, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will also learn new functions and new forms of expression. These innovations are updated regularly by means of remote software upgrade.

More personalization with the BMW ID.

With the new BMW iDrive, customers benefit from increasing personalization of the user experience based on the BMW ID. In the future, even more personalized settings can be safely saved in the BMW ID and transferred between vehicles. By assigning a PIN or linking a key to the BMW ID, personal data is protected from access by other vehicle users.

Once the BMW ID is registered, the driver is greeted personally and the individual profile picture appears, which can be uploaded via the My BMW app. After activating the BMW ID with the linked key or by selecting the BMW ID in the vehicle, the personal settings are immediately available.

Vehicle receives the driver: Great Entrance Moments.

“Great Entrance Moments” describes the user experience from the approach of the driver to the vehicle through to the start of the journey. All steps are optimally orchestrated by the vehicle and linked to create an inspiring overall experience.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

A central technology that makes this possible is ultra-wideband radio technology (UWB). This enables precise localization between the vehicle and the key or smartphone. The vehicle can see with a precision of a few centimeters where the driver is approaching and at what distance he is. As soon as the distance falls below three meters, the vehicle begins to wake up and signals this with a rising and dynamic play of light from outside lights. A soft and subdued light is activated in the interior. The vehicle shows the customer the way to the entry area. The light carpet in the area of the driver's door illuminates the entry area with geometries that are based on the elements of the graphical user interface. In addition, the door handles and the handle on the tailgate are illuminated to make it easier for the customer to make the next move.

If the driver approaches a distance of less than one and a half meters, the vehicle unlocks, regardless of whether the customer has their UWB key or a smartphone with a BMW Digital Key Plus with them. When the doors are opened, the seat entry aid, surface heating and steering wheel heating are activated. A brand-typical welcome animation starts on the entire BMW Curved Display and accompanies the start-up of the system.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

During boarding, the personal settings of the BMW ID are loaded and the connection between the customer's smartphone is established. If a phone call is active at that moment, it is seamlessly transmitted to the vehicle's microphone and speakers. A welcome window appears on the control display with a personal greeting and useful suggestions or information.

BMW iDrive optimally supports the driver and inspires with intelligence.

Holistic driving experience for the senses: My Modes. The new My Modes ensure a holistic user experience based on the individual preferences of the driver. They are used to create unique moments for the driver and his fellow travelers. In the conception of the My Modes, a large number of functions relevant to the driving situation were considered in order to create the most functional and emotional user experience possible for the respective situation. With the My Modes several senses are addressed - from seeing to hearing to feeling. My Modes can be called up very easily using a voice command or a specially created button on the center console.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

In the first expansion stage of My Modes, up to ten different control levers are combined in the vehicle and coordinated with one another. This includes the functional scope of the previous driving experience modes such as drive and transmission control, steering characteristics and chassis settings. The respective configuration becomes visible through adjustments in the artwork specially developed for My Modes, the display style and the display layouts as well as a change in the color of the displays, which, like the ambient light, is based on the corresponding world of experience. In addition, changing the My Modes is associated with audible changes such as the adaptation of the engine sound.

The new BMW iDrive starts with the three modes Efficient, Sport and Personal. Further modes will be added as part of the future further development of BMW iDrive. Modes are also kept available that are not primarily designed for the driver or the driving task. In addition, further functions are integrated into the modes and the options for expressing functions are expanded. The updates are installed in the vehicles via over-the-air upgrade.

Navigation, parking and charging with BMW Maps.

With the launch of the new BMW Operating System 8, the digital services for navigation, parking and charging will be fully and user-oriented integrated into the cloud-based BMW Maps system. The intelligent functions of BMW Maps will also be expanded.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

A central function is the "learning navigation". This means that BMW Maps learns and anticipates which destination the driver is likely to drive to next based on the habits that are linked to the individual BMW ID. This saves you from having to re-enter your destination for all regular journeys, and especially for commuter journeys, in order to still be proactively notified of delays and dangers on the route. All learned destinations can be viewed and deleted in the vehicle and in the My BMW app.

There are three views to choose from for the navigation map. In the adaptive view, relevant information is displayed along the route, which is adapted to the respective driving situation and user habits. The information is selected in a particularly focused manner in the reduced view, because only the four most frequently used categories of points of interest are displayed. In contrast, in the expanded view (Expanded), all available information about the surroundings can be seen in the map view. These include, for example, points of interest, but also the traffic situation on the side streets and the current situation when looking for a parking space.

Intelligent automation of air conditioning.

The air conditioning system will in future be integrated into the BMW Curved Display, as it will only be necessary in rare cases for the customer to adjust individual air conditioning parameters. This is made possible by the fact that, for the first time, all temperature and comfort functions are intelligently controlled as a whole. Adjustments are registered by the system and saved for the user profile using the BMW ID in order to reduce the need for recurring user adjustments.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

The basis for the best possible presetting is the evaluation of more than 440 million customer trips across all vehicle classes and regions of the world. The intelligent automatic air conditioning controls not only the blower power (air volume) and air distribution, but also the steering wheel heating, surface heating, seat heating and seat ventilation in order to ensure optimal climate comfort. The automatic air conditioning also takes into account a large number of other information such as the number and position of the occupants as well as the intensity and direction of the solar radiation, so that the air conditioning system can be operated as energy-efficiently as possible. This makes the intelligent climate control from BMW probably the first such highly networked climate system in the automotive industry.

The climate system is operated centrally by specifying a target temperature for each climate zone. The intelligent automatic air conditioning regulates - on the basis of the individual user specifications in the air conditioning menu - all existing additional components automatically. Various needs can also be communicated directly by voice command. The message “My feet are cold”, for example, leads to an increase in the footwell temperature.

Technology and networking.

BMWOperating System 8. The BMW Operating System 8 is the most powerful and most extensive technology stack that BMW has ever developed. This forms the basis for the eighth generation and the reinterpretation of BMW iDrive. The BMW Group has been developing the central control unit and software integration platform completely on Linux and independently since 2013. The prerequisite for a stable, upgradeable, high-quality and brand-defining system is unrestricted sovereignty over the software. In times of rapid digital development, it is no longer sufficient to completely renew the digital features for the vehicle every three years.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

With Remote Software Upgrade, the vehicle is consistently thought of as a digital platform. The introduction of a new BMW operating system generation no longer corresponds to a completed development, but is the basis for continuous further developments during the life cycle. The integral interaction of hardware and software, the technical possibilities of remote software upgrade and the agile development processes in the company create the basis for making new functions usable directly for the customer in just a few weeks and months.

Always up to date: Remote software upgrade.

Since 2018 and the introduction of the BMW Operating System 7, it has been possible for drivers of BMW models to always keep their vehicle up to date with the latest software version using Remote Software Upgrade. The functionality will also be continued and further optimized in the new BMW Operating System 8. Remote Software Upgrade in the BMW Operating System 8 also provides the options for exceptionally demanding and large software updates, for example in the area of driver assistance and partial automation. With the BMW Operating System 8 it will also be possible to schedule the installation of a remote software upgrade.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

The BMW Group is one of the key drivers in the field of functional over-the-air upgrades. As early as 2020, the BMW Group was the European automobile manufacturer that carried out the largest upgrade campaigns. And for the end of 2021, the BMW Group aims to be the manufacturer with the largest fleet that can be upgraded over-the-air in the world. By the end of the year, a total of more than 2,5 million BMW remote software upgrades will be received.

BMW Digital Key Plus with ultra-wideband radio technology.

BMW has been a pioneer in the use of smartphones as a digital vehicle key since 2018. The premium automobile manufacturer has developed a new, convenient and secure way of unlocking and starting the vehicle without having to take the Apple iPhone out of your pocket. The upcoming BMW Digital Key Plus expansion stage is based on ultra-wideband technology (UWB), which is integrated in the vehicle and, for example, on the iPhone's U1 chip.

20 years later: the new BMW iDrive (Operating System 8)

UWB is a digital radio technology for close range with high bandwidth, which is characterized by an extraordinarily precise localization with the greatest possible security. The BMW Digital Key Plus is being introduced for the first time with the fully electric BMW iX.

More apps, more variety: Optimized 3rd party integration.

The new generation of BMW iDrive offers new options for seamlessly integrating the habits and wishes of customers into the operating system. The increased degree of flexibility ensures, among other things, that apps from third-party providers can be used even more easily and conveniently in the vehicle in the future. Comprehensive integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also guaranteed by the BMW Operating System 8. The services of Alibaba and Tencent will also be comprehensively integrated with the new BMW iDrive for Chinese customers.
