BMW Team RLL and the title defense project 2021!

After two victories in the past two years, BMW Team RLL wants to achieve the next success at the 2021 Hours of Daytona (USA) in 24. On 30./31. January two MOTUL BMW M8 GTE with strong driver pairings in the GTLM class start the race. In the car with starting number 24, John Edwards (USA), Jesse Krohn (FIN) and Augusto Farfus (BRA) want to repeat their Daytona victory from last year. They are supported by BMW works driver Marco Wittmann (GER). In the # 25 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE, Bruno Spengler (CAN), Connor De Phillippi (USA), Philipp Eng (AUT) and Timo Glock (GER) take turns. In 2021, BMW Team RLL will only compete in the four IMSA endurance classics in Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta (all USA), which together form the Michelin Endurance Cup. Edwards and Krohn won the title there in 2020.

Project title defense 2021!

The Michelin Endurance Cup was extremely successful for BMW Team RLL last season. Edwards and Krohn celebrated two wins and two third places in the four races and thus secured the drivers' title. At the same time, the team title went to BMW Team RLL and the manufacturer's title to BMW.

The team is tackling the “title defense project” with three regular drivers per vehicle. In the # 24 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE, Edwards, Krohn and Farfus contest all four IMSA endurance races. In the sister vehicle, Spengler, De Phillippi and Eng form the regular line-up. Wittmann and Glock join them in Daytona. Both BMW works drivers are competing for the first time in the MOTUL BMW M8 GTE at the “Daytona International Speedway”. Wittmann is returning to Daytona for the first time since his involvement with Turner Motorsport in 2016 in the BMW M6 GT3, and Glock is celebrating its premiere.

BMW Motorsport and BMW Team RLL will once again be supported by their strong partners MOTUL, Akrapovič and PUMA this season.

Milestone for Turner Motorsport.

Turner Motorsport will field a BMW M24 GT6 in the GTD class at the Daytona 3 Hours and is facing a very special milestone. The team around team principal Will Turner (USA) will contest their 400th race for BMW. Bill Auberlen, Robby Foley, Colton Herta (all USA) and Aidan Read (AUS) take turns at the wheel of the vehicle. Auberlen and Foley will complete the entire 2021 IMSA season for Turner Motorsport. Read supports the duo in all endurance races.

The 59th edition of the Daytona 24 Hours begins on January 30th at 15.40:21.40 p.m. local time (22:24 p.m. CET). From January 24nd to XNUMXth, all BMW teams are preparing for the first highlight of the season as part of the “Roar before the XNUMX”, the official test drives.

Voices before the race:

John Edwards (BMW Team RLL, # 24 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE): “Even if the break wasn't that long, I'm eager to return to the racetrack. Last year the 24-hour race was intense and exciting right up to the end. Fortunately, we were able to receive the Rolex watches for the winners in the end. The competition is strong again this year, but I am confident that we can take the third victory in a row at the biggest race of the year with BMW Team RLL.

Jesse Krohn (BMW Team RLL, # 24 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE): “Daytona has been a good place for the team over the past two years. During this time we did a lot right and learned just as much. Of course there is still a lot that can go wrong in a 24-hour race, but with the two victories we have apparently found the key to being successful at Daytona. We have strong drivers in both cars and I'm really looking forward to racing with John, Augusto and Marco. Augusto is incredibly experienced in North America, you don't have to explain anything to him in Daytona. Marco is extremely fast and will certainly not need much time to learn what you need in Daytona. He's been here before, so he knows what to expect. "

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team RLL, # 24 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE): “Daytona is always a very special and magical place for me. The race is very emotional. Our BMW M8 GTE was always strong there and I was able to win in the past two years. Accordingly, I am happy to be there again this year and hopefully to be able to help the team on the way to another success. "

Marco Wittmann (BMW Team RLL, # 24 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE): “It is very nice that the new year starts with a highlight. For me it will be the first race of the season and at the same time the premiere in the BMW M8 GTE. In 24 I drove the Daytona 2016 Hours for Turner Motorsport in the BMW M6 GT3. Of course, due to the pandemic, the race will take place under special auspices, but the corresponding hygiene and safety measures have already proven themselves in 2020 in the DTM or at the 24 hours at the Nürburgring. In any case, I am happy that it is starting. "

Bruno Spengler (BMW Team RLL, # 25 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE): “Daytona is a huge highlight for me and I'm happy to be back. Last year we had a car capable of winning, but unfortunately a lot of bad luck with a technical defect in the race. Hopefully we'll have better luck this time. In general, I'm really looking forward to working with BMW Team RLL and Connor De Phillippi again, because we got along very well last year. Of course, I also know Philipp Eng very well from the DTM. The four endurance classics are great races with an incredible history. To be there is great. I already know Daytona, Sebring and Road Atlanta. Watkins Glen will be a completely new track for me, which I am very excited about. "

Connor De Phillippi (BMW Team RLL, # 25 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE): “First of all, I am very happy to be able to continue on the common path with BMW, and thank you for your trust. In 2021 I have high demands on myself and the team. The fact that I have the same team-mate in Bruno as last year is extremely valuable because we can build on our experience throughout the season. Daytona always offers a great show and I'm really looking forward to going back to work with BMW Team RLL. "

Philipp Eng (BMW Team RLL, # 25 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE): “I am really looking forward to driving the four IMSA endurance races with BMW Team RLL and very good teammates. I hope that we can repeat the Daytona victories from the past two years and that I get the chance to fight for the endurance title. In 2019, after Sebring, I led the drivers' championship, but after that no IMSA races were planned for me. So I'm all the more looking forward to this season. "

Timo Glock (BMW Team RLL, # 25 MOTUL BMW M8 GTE): “I'm really excited to see what awaits me at Daytona, because both the track and the BMW M8 GTE are completely new territory for me. I'll use the test drives before the race weekend to get used to everything. I'm particularly looking forward to the very special experience of a 24-hour race, which I was able to enjoy for the last time in 2015 when I worked together with Alex Zanardi and Bruno Spengler in Spa-Francorchamps. I have strong team-mates and I hope for a good result. They have been able to prove in recent years that the BMW M8 GTE and BMW Team RLL have the potential to do this. "
