From the series to the racetrack - and back, part 2: After the BMW M design talk (see here), BMW M GmbH presents the common heart of the new BMW M4 GT3 racing car and the BMW M4 Competition series model (combined fuel consumption: 10,2 - 9,9 l / 100 km according to WLTP, 10,2 l / 100 km according to NEDC; CO2 emissions combined: 233 - 227 g / km according to WLTP, 234 g / km according to NEDC). In the BMW M4 Motortalk, Marcus Engelke, Project Manager Drive BMW M4, and Ulrich Schulz, Head of Drive Design BMW Motorsport, show interesting details of the six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which was designed for use in road vehicles and on the racetrack from the start .

"510 PS, 650 Newton meters - this is the most powerful straight-six that we have ever installed in a production car," says Marcus Engelke right at the beginning of the video. "590 PS, 700 Newton meters - that is the most powerful in-line six-cylinder engine that BMW has installed in a racing car since the days of a BMW M1 Group 5," adds Ulrich Schulz. The two engineers then describe how astonishingly large the similarities between the engine of the BMW M4 Competition and the new flagship in the BMW M Motorsport vehicle portfolio are. The BMW M4 GT3 is in the final year of its development phase and, in the hands of BMW M Motorsport teams, will fight for victories and titles in GT races around the world from 2022.

Since the crankcase, cylinder head, crankshaft drive, crankshaft and connecting rod of the engine of the M series model are designed to perform at their best on the racetrack, the engine is the perfect basis for the racing engine. Marcus Engelke and Ulrich Schulz describe in detail how the engine is positioned and installed in the two different vehicles, and underline this with easy-to-understand sketches on a flipchart. It becomes clear where the special requirements for the engine in the series vehicle and in racing use lie and how BMW M GmbH has met them.

in the video: also detailed individual components

In addition to the two complete engines, the two experts also show detailed individual components in the video, such as the dry sump trough and the throttle valves of the racing engine as well as the intercooler of the BMW M4 Competition. They will also present components that are identical in both engines, such as a connecting rod with piston and the turbocharger housing, which did not have to be modified for use in the racing car.

“Not only are many components identical, we also work closely together in production. The complete engine is assembled a few meters from here based on a basic engine from series production, ”says Markus Engelke about the engine of the BMW M4 Competition with a view of the BMW M location in Munich's Preußenstrasse. "And then it comes full circle," explains Ulrich Schulz: "BMW M and BMW Motorsport have a common history that began at the Preußenstrasse location."
