New remote software upgrade for 1,3 million BMWs.

Starting today, a new remote software upgrade will be rolled out for 1,3 million vehicles with BMW Operating System 7. This activates the Amazon Alexa integration in four additional markets. The upgrade also includes improvements such as the integration of traditional destination entry in BMW Maps.

The upcoming remote software upgrade updates the BMW Operating System 7 to version 21-03. The roll-out will start on June 01.06.21st, 1,3st for Germany and will be rolled out to other BMW Connected Drive markets around the world in a timely manner. In total, over 20 million BMWs (and over XNUMX models) will receive the upgrade.

Customers can use many Alexa functions in the vehicle that they already know from home. This includes editing shopping lists, calling up messages or playing music. It is also possible to control compatible smart home devices from the vehicle. So far, Alexa has been available for BMW Operating System 7 vehicles in Germany, Austria, Great Britain, Spain and Italy. With this upgrade, four more countries are added with France, the USA, Canada and Brazil.

BMW Maps developers also bring traditional search masks.

The BMW Maps navigation system was rolled out for vehicles with BMW Operating System 2020 in mid-7. With the cloud-based system for the first time, route calculation is significantly faster and more dynamic by combining real-time information with forecast models. In addition, additional context information is now available in the cloud for more than 120 million points of interest, such as reviews, opening times and pictures. The database for the POIs is updated and kept up to date several times a week at short and regular intervals.

The easiest way to enter a destination is in natural language in a dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. With BMW Maps, additional improvements have been implemented in terms of user-friendly operation via touch or BMW controller. For example, the one-box search was used for the first time. This allows customers to search for addresses and names of places as they are used to when entering a line of text in web search engines. The underlying database is filtered with the help of algorithms in order to display the probable hit suggestions already during input (auto-completion).

Many BMW customers would also like the familiar, learned mask for entering destinations (country, city, street, house number) back. BMW always aims to offer its customers the best possible customer experience. After the decision of the product management and the developers, the traditional search in BMW Maps was further developed and is now available to customers in addition to the one-box search.

The adaptation for BMW Maps becomes active after the current remote software upgrade has been installed.

Further improvements of functions

One of the improvements included in this upgrade is that the Lane Departure Warning settings can now be saved permanently. If customers do not want to benefit from the lane departure warning, they can deactivate the function in the settings. From now on, the deactivation will be saved in the activated BMW ID. The function only becomes active again when the customer makes the corresponding change in the settings.

Another improvement associated with this update of the BMW Operating System corrects a display error when playing media with Android smartphones connected via Bluetooth (with Android 11). After the upgrade, the cover art is processed correctly when changing music titles.

In some vehicle models with BMW Operating System 7, the surround view was not correctly positioned on the control display. This has also been fixed as part of the quality improvements.

With BMW Operating System 7 and Remote Software Upgrade, BMW drivers have been able to keep their vehicle up to date quickly and easily since 2018. The new functions can be conveniently played over-the-air in the car. The installation files are prepared in the vehicle in the background, after which even extensive upgrades are rarely required more than 20 minutes.

Due to the corona situation - with effects on the availability of support capacities - there may be time shifts in individual markets when the current upgrade is rolled out.

Vehicles with BMW Operating System 7 that were produced from March 2021 are already equipped with the latest software version.

Customers are informed about an available remote software upgrade via the My BMW app or in the control display in the vehicle. In addition, the software version can be viewed in the vehicle settings under Remote Software Upgrade and a search can be made for available upgrades. Remote software upgrade is now available for over 20 BMW models and thus for almost the entire BMW fleet. Vehicles with software older than version 20-07 can only install the latest version after the intermediate versions have been downloaded and installed. The next possible upgrade is always offered for installation in the vehicle. Customers can never install the wrong version.
