Jeff Koons X BMW - Edition of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé!

Jeff Koons and Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, announced today that the artist will create an edition of the M850i xDrive Gran Coupé. The luxurious 8 Series Gran Coupé will celebrate its world premiere at Frieze Los Angeles in February 2022 and will then be available as a limited edition. As early as 2010, the American artist designed the BMW M3 GT2 Art Car that took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race. In the same year, rock singer Bono of U2 wrote in an article for the New York Times that it should be Jeff Koons who should help shape the design of the cars of the future. BMW and Koons then remained in conversation and are now presenting their latest collaboration at the invitation of Angelika Nollert, director of the Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum, in the Pinakothek der Moderne.

Jeff Koons, artist: “It is an honor and I am very much looking forward to having another opportunity to work with BMW and design the edition of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé. I've been thinking hard about what this vehicle is all about. What does performance mean? How do you communicate something that represents the entire power of the BMW 8 Series and also includes a human element? It's wonderful to be a member of the BMW family again. "

“I am proud to announce our new partnership with Jeff Koons. And let me say one thing: I'm excited about what he has created! The 8 Series Gran Coupé is firmly anchored in our hearts and Jeff's design is full of joy and passion. Since the beginning of the collaboration, Jeff has emphasized how proud he is to be part of the BMW family again. Dozens of our engineers and designers did their very best to celebrate our partnership and bring his vision to life. Welcome home, Jeff Koons! ”So Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.

Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design: “In 2021 we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of our global cultural commitment. We are big fans of the arts and the bold voices of our time. Emotions are our passion and it is a great source of inspiration to collaborate with Jeff Koons one more time. Which artist would be better to work with on the 8 Series Gran Coupé? Vehicle design is inspired by art and technology and creates highly emotional experiences from it. It's a pleasure to work with Jeff Koons again to create something really special. He is one of the greatest artists of our time and at the same time one of the most inspiring and committed people I have ever worked with. "

The vehicles are currently being built in secret at the BMW Group's Dingolfing plant. During an exclusive event in the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich's museum for contemporary art, Jeff Koons and Oliver Zipse gave first insights a few days before the IAA MOBILITY 2021 and showed details of the 8-series Gran Coupé designed by the artist.

THE 8 X JEFF KOONS is the embodiment of precision, sophistication and craftsmanship. For example, the multi-layer paint was applied in 285 working hours. The expressive and impressive design combines eleven colors from blue to silver and yellow to black. Only two vehicles are produced per week. The multi-colored interior impresses with the processing of high-quality materials, the finest leathers and an engraved signature of the artist. The seats are in rich red and blue tones, the colors of the high-performance brand BMW M. The sporty, powerful design includes elements from Pop Art and geometric patterns - a homage to the sophisticated lines and shapes of the 8 Series Gran Coupé.

The BMW 850i was the first model in the 1990 series in 8. He was celebrated for his visionary approach to driving the future, appealing to all those car enthusiasts who appreciate a perfect combination of elegance and performance. In February 2022, BMW will present the Jeff Koons edition. On the occasion of the presentation in Munich, the Art Car of the American artist and the "rolling sculptures" by Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, John Baldessari and Esther Mahlangu will be exhibited in the Pinakothek der Moderne - as a testimony to the international, since 50 Years of cultural commitment by the BMW Group.
