In May 2021, the BMW Group opened "THE STUDIO by BMW" at Motorworld Munich, an attractive brand showcase that has been presenting a true highlight of the BMW Art Car Collection since mid-August: the BMW M1 Group 4, hand-painted by the legendary pop art icon Andy Warhol. In 1979, four years after the first BMW Art Car, Pop Art icon Andy Warhol, equipped with buckets of paint, took on the fourth BMW Art Car. The work of art was completed in just 28 minutes. Colorful tones extend across the BMW M1, as do brush marks, Warhol's fingerprints and finally his signature on the rear. The BMW M1 Group 4 was used in the 24 Hours of Le Mans that same year and finished sixth overall and second in its class.

Helmut Käs, Head of BMW Group Classic, expresses the fascination of the exhibit: "The BMW Art Cars stand for the unique combination of art, design and technology. The BMW M1 Group 4 is already absolutely iconic as a racing car alone, but was legitimately classified as the ultimate legend by being painted by Andy Warhol".
Pop art legend Andy Warhol painted the 470 hp BMW M1 himself from start to finish. He once said of his sweeping brush and finger strokes: “I tried to depict speed visually. When a car drives really fast, all lines and colors become blurred.” Visitors to Motorworld Munich now have the opportunity to look at the vehicle until mid-October. In addition, a BMW M3 GTR (E46) is currently on display in the listed halls of the former railway repair shop in Munich-Freimann. Product Genius will answer questions at the Genius Bar in the middle of THE STUDIO by BMW. On Fridays and Saturdays, a history expert from the BMW Museum is also present to answer questions about the historical exhibits.
