Bugatti was there at the GP Ice Race 2022!

For the first time since 1960, Bugatti takes part in the annual GP Ice Race on the ice track and the associated 50-metre show lap in Zell am See, Austria. A Type 51 and a Bugatti Baby II – inspired by the legendary Type 35 – caused a sensation. Skijoring, in which first horses and then motorized vehicles pull skiers down the ice slope, gave rise to a new sport that was first practiced in the winter of 1937 in Zell am See, the home of the Porsche family. Inspired by this sport, the Professor Ferdinand Porsche memorial race started on February 10, 1952 on the frozen Lake Zell and was held in the following years whenever the ice was thick enough for it. In 1960, a Type 35 and two motorcycles opened the GP Ice Race while a plane flew low over the start line. At the legendary race, which took place this year on the weekend of January 28th to 30th, the racing drivers not only competed against each other in modern and classic racing cars, but also in iconic rally vehicles.

This year's race was held under the name "ICEolated" at the airfield in Zell am See - unfortunately without an audience due to COVID-19 restrictions. At previous races, more than 10.000 enthusiastic spectators lined the circuit to appreciate this unique spectacle.

Bugatti Baby II as a safety car in "Ice Spec" design

Despite its small format, the Bugatti Baby II built by The Little Car Company was used as a "safety car" and guided the racing cars onto the track before the start. The miniature version of the Bugatti Type 35, one of the most successful racing cars of all time, competed in an "Ice Spec" version specially designed for this purpose. The "Pur Sang" model is painted in "French Racing Blue" and has been adapted to the winter conditions to offer maximum safety. In addition to studded tires, limited-slip differential and 1930s-inspired racing suits with GP Ice Race branding, the Bugatti Baby II also featured safety-car-style hazard warning lights. As a tribute to the Type 35 and its historic successes, the number 35 was also emblazoned on the body. The Bugatti Baby II is available in three versions: Basis, Vitesse and Pur Sang. The Pur Sang variant is intended for collectors and has the same drive as the Vitesse, but also has a hand-made aluminum body. Using the same traditional bodywork techniques as the original Bugatti Type 35, it takes over 200 hours of craftsmanship to craft an aluminum body.

Rear-wheel drive in the Bugatti Baby II

The exclusive rear-wheel drive versions of the Baby II feature an all-electric drive, high-performance hydraulic brakes and selectable driving modes. The basic model offers two different modes: a beginner mode with a power of 1 kW, in which the speed is limited to 20 km/h, and a professional mode with a power of 4 kW and a maximum speed of 45 km/h. With the Vitesse and Pur Sang versions, the driver can also choose between the beginner and professional driving mode, but an upgraded drive – which can only be activated using the Bugatti Speed Key – provides extra performance. In this way, drivers can use a total of up to 10 kW. With a total weight of only 230 kilograms, a top speed of 70 km/h can be reached. Depending on the driver's weight, the 60 km/h mark is broken in just six seconds. Photo credit: Bugatti
