When BMW launched the E2000 M46 with a high-revving 3-liter in-line six-cylinder engine (S3,2B54) in 32, the high-rev concept that made it possible to run the 6-ender up to the limit of 8000 rpm was the probably the most spectacular in this vehicle class. But often the engine, which is based on the M1 engine of the BMW AG vehicles, had the problem that the specified 54 PS & 343 NM torque was only available on paper and was often not achieved. A similar problem had the same time built S62b50-V8 from the E39 M5 way synonymous. And also with the current vehicle, which was on site at the French tuner Shiftech Lyon, it became apparent that the series performance was not available. Before the modification by means of chip tuning, the M3 was therefore put on a dynamometer and it turned out that only 320 PS & 360 NM torque are available. Basically that's no more power than its predecessor, the E36 M3 with 3,2-liter S50B32 in-line six-cylinder, already had.
For the owner of the E46, of course, an untenable situation that has to be changed. Of course, with a naturally aspirated engine like that of the E46 M3, you can't expect such an enormous increase in performance as with a compressor or turbo engine, but nevertheless a performance increase should also be possible here by means of chip tuning. Shiftech installed its own software for this and thus achieved an increase in performance of 20PS & 19NM torque. After all, the chip tuning brings the Munich-based company to the level of the data in the vehicle registration and the torque is even slightly higher. If we get more information about the modifications to the E46 M3, there is of course, as always, an update for this report.
