From special vehicle manufacturer Binz (has been part of the Woodall Nicholson Group since 2019) the first fully electric one is coming hearse in Europe that sandwich technology based on the Tesla Model S is mass-produced. The delivery of the first two "Binz.E" is planned for the end of October to the beginning of November and for the special conversion, Binz swears by proven manual work as well as innovative manufacturing technology. In the new plant in Schwäbisch Gmünd near Stuttgart, the special body parts are produced in series and the paint shop for special and exhibition vehicles is also located there. The sandwich e-funeral vehicle results from the desire of many funeral directors. They want to be able to drive into the cemeteries with as little emissions and no noise as possible, which is possible with the Binz.E. It is 5,82 meters long, 1,86 meters wide and 1,72 meters high at the rear.

Space for loads of equipment

This means that a lot of equipment can be stored in addition to the coffin. Incidentally, the technical properties will not change as a result of the conversion. The Model S still has a range of approx. 350 kilometers. For the conversion, the Model S is divided behind the A-pillar and then the body is extended to the aforementioned almost 6 meters using a self-supporting sandwich technology made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Liquid foam is used to connect the individual components, which hardens under high temperature and high internal pressure. The result is a stable, stretched chassis that, even under maximum load, shows almost identical driving behavior as the original.

Binz.E as an electric hearse

At the moment the Binz.E is the only electric hearse with GRP sandwich technology. All others are built with the classic spaceframe system and, according to Binz, are heavier and less stable. To make work easier, Binz even installed an electric coffin floor, and the tailgate can also be operated at the push of a button with a touchpad at the rear of the vehicle. There are also self-tinting panes in white or gray and the coffin base can even be provided with an urn holder. Not only new vehicles are suitable for the conversion, but also used copies of the Model S from the facelift from 2016. And German customers even receive a state environmental bonus with the Binz.E special vehicle. If we get more information about the changes, there will of course be an update for this report.
