In 2000, when the philosophies of Mercedes-Benz and BMW were still completely different, the BMW 728iL we presented rolled off the assembly line. Back when an S-Class was still an unsporting and clumsy armored car, while the 7-series BMW mimed the sporty dynamic in the luxury class, there were far fewer similarities in terms of design and alignment between Mercedes and BMW than is the case today. Every car fan still remembers the rolling safe called W140, which was the full fat level of the S-Class, while the sporty, elegant, almost light-footed 7-series BMW of the E38 series was the exact opposite. This also has an impact on its popularity in the tuning scene, because modified S-Classes of the W140 series are almost impossible to find, while the 7-series BMW of the E38 series is quite popular with BMW tuning fans. With the generation W220 and the E65 that changes completely!

And in our opinion, this 7 Series is a true masterpiece when it comes to refining an elegant youngtimer discreetly and professionally. With its Airride chassis from AccuAir, which can be adjusted in height via e: Level control, it looks very sporty, but at the same time extremely elegant and sophisticated. The optical highlight are of course the concave rims, which were kept in white, and most likely do not come from the BMW OEM shelf, even if they are provided with the white and blue propeller logo. They show up in the design of the BMW Star Spoke Styling 95, which was only available in 19 inches from the factory. In addition, the drawn wheel arches immediately catch the eye, which have been modified to accommodate the large aluminum. At the rear, the taillights were modified and got the light graphics of the facelift version of the BMW 5-series (E39). So the now over 20 year old BMW looks timelessly elegant and you can't tell its age. In our opinion, the E38 series with these modifications is like a good wine that ages with dignity and gets better and better with time. Above all, the classic and straightforward design, which does without embarrassing gimmicky, is still convincing today.

The interior has remained completely standard.

No modifications were made to the interior, apart from the installation of the e: Level control unit, which is used to vary the ground clearance. Otherwise, the full luxury of the turn of the millennium prevails in the cockpit, which includes things like a car phone and a CD radio.

Nothing was changed on the six-cylinder.

The drive source for the BMW 728iL is an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine called M52B28 with a displacement of 2,8 liters, which does not require forced ventilation. This unit develops an output of 193 hp and generates a maximum torque of 280 Newton meters. From today's point of view, this may seem a little underpowered for a luxury sedan, but the car is not made to clear the left lane on the motorway, but to glide in style. Accordingly, the performance is rather modest, with a sprint time from 0 to 100 km / h in 9,6 seconds and a top speed of 226 km / h, but completely sufficient.

Interesting tuning project from the Middle Kingdom.

This 7 series clearly shows how much the Chinese tuning scene has improved and developed in recent years. If you are also planning a project of this kind, we have good news for you, because a 7-series BMW of the E38 series is already available for a few thousand euros in a usable condition.
