BMW Art Car 2024: The BMW M Hybrid V8 as a racing work of art!

Yesterday, Tuesday evening, this happened at the Pompidou Center in Paris 20. BMW Art Car presented, which will start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (June 15th/16th). The New York artist Julie Mehreto has transformed the M Hybrid V8 into a “performative painting”. The rolling work of art has the starting number 20 and is produced by Robin Frijns, Rene Rast and Sheldon van der Linde driven. Van der Linde was immediately impressed by the “bold graffiti look” that Mehretu chose.

He also plans to wear a special helmet at Le Mans inspired by Mehretu's style. He also considers it a huge honor to be one of the legendary drivers at his first Le Mans start BMW Art Cars to drive.Mehretu sees her art car as a performative painting, created for the racetrack and not for the museum. The unique piece was created in collaboration with motorsport and engineering teams and will only be considered finished after the Le Mans race.

The artist transfers for the first time two-dimensional image motif in a three-dimensional representation, which she did well. Mehretu's design is based on her painting "Everywhen" (2021 - 2023), which is currently on view at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice and will later enter the collection of the New Yorker Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) transforms. BMW Motorsport Director Andreas Roos emphasizes that M Hybrid V8 But it should not only impress with its design, but especially with its performance.

Frijns, Rast and van der Linde are the drivers who have already proven this season that they can fight for top results in the Hypercar class. For almost 50 years, BMW has been cooperating with various artists from all over the world on the look of its racing vehicles. In the past, the BMW Art Cars were created by, among others Alexander Calder (1975), Frank Stella (1976), Roy Lichtenstein (1977), Andy Warhol (1979), Jenny Holzer (1999) and Jeff Koons (2010) designed. With the 20th BMW Art Car, BMW is continuing its tradition and combining art and motorsport in a unique way.
