If you talk about the fourth generation of the M3 (E90) then you actually only have advantages over the less powerful vehicles of the series! 4-pipe sports exhaust system, standard 18-inch alloy wheels, a power-to-weight ratio of around 4 kg / PS, an acceleration of 4,7 seconds to 100 km / h and a top speed of an impressive 280 km / h (with M Driver's Package)! But from a tuning point of view, the phenomenal S65B40 high-speed V8, for example compared to a 320d (N46B20), also has a big disadvantage! It is a purely naturally aspirated engine and if you want to achieve an increase in performance with chip tuning, there is no additional 20-30% out of it as is the case with a vehicle with turbocharger / compressor charging, here you have to be satisfied with significantly less . Mcchip-DKR from Mechernich (North Rhine-Westphalia) had just such an E90 4.0 V8 on site and the motto here was "Chiptuning". The standard output of 420PS / 400 Nm torque was exceeded even without charging because in the end the M3 pushes 436PS / 412Nm torque on the roller and thus even comes relatively close to the M3 GTS.
However, if you want to achieve even more performance with this vehicle, you would have to go to work with classic tuning methods and these are called sports exhaust system including manifold & sports catalytic converters, new intake, revise engine (Camshafts, cylinder liners, pistons, connecting rods, engine capacity, etc.). All changes that definitely cost a lot of money and are not comparable to the relatively simple chip tuning. So if you refer to the possibility of increasing performance, the current downsizing trend and the associated obligation to charge the engines using a turbocharger / compressor is a blessing because significantly more power can be achieved with these engines.
