Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020 in Las Vegas, the BMW Group will present its visionary approaches to the public from January 7th to 10th, 2020, how the mobility experience of the future can be designed. The premium manufacturer's appearance this year is themed #ChangeYourPerception. This is based on the conviction that it is only through a change of perspective that it is not only possible to understand the mobility needs of the future, but also to be able to answer them. This change of perspective will be shown and staged at this year's CES at the BMW Group's stand, and brought closer to visitors from all over the world through immediate worlds of experience and practical demonstrations. A highlight at this year's CES is the BMW i Interaction EASE, which at the BMW Group's stand invites you to take a look now into the future where autonomous driving will be commonplace. The exterior of the vision vehicle was deliberately kept abstract in order to focus entirely on the interior. This should not only give the passenger a feeling that he has already arrived during the trip, but also show the possibilities of intuitive and almost human interaction between the passenger and the vehicle. The highlight here is the innovative look detection of the BMW i Interaction EASE. The vehicle's artificial intelligence recognizes what the passenger is fixing beyond the window panes and offers them the relevant information or other interaction options.

BMW X7 ZeroG Lounger

The second CES highlight also shows how specifically the BMW Group is already tackling such future scenarios. No fewer than three BMW X7s were equipped with the ZeroG Lounger comfort seat, which, as can be seen at the electronics fair, will be used in series production in just a few years. The ZeroG Lounger opens up a completely new way to travel relaxed. The passenger can tilt the seat back up to an angle of 60 degrees without sacrificing comfort and safety. The third highlight is the BWM i3 Urban Suite, which is intended to convey a mobility experience that is completely tailored to the needs of the passenger. For this purpose, conventional BMW i3s were completely rebuilt except for the driver's seat and dashboard and modeled on the ambience of a boutique hotel with a particular focus on sustainability. In the interior of the 20 BMW i3 Urban Suite models that are used on the streets of Las Vegas and can be requested via app, passengers can expect a relaxed atmosphere. Lounge chairs with plenty of legroom contribute to this, and they also offer the option of completely masking the outside world acoustically in a special listening zone. With these three extraordinary ideas, the BMW Group is once again underlining its claim to consistently gear technologies towards tangible customer benefits. The topic of 5G will also play a special role at this year's premium manufacturer's trade fair appearance.

BMW iNEXT in 2021

Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

Because with the market launch of the BMW iNEXT in 2021, this vehicle will also be capable of 5G. The BMW Group is probably the first premium manufacturer worldwide to offer the new radio standard in a production vehicle. There will also be a live demonstration in the outside area of the BMW exhibition stand, showing how 5G can also set new standards in traffic safety. A BMW i3 and a smartphone will play the main role here. In the past, the company has repeatedly presented important technologies and their possible applications to the public at the Consumer Electronic Show, which are now ready for series production in the BMW Group's product portfolio. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant was presented last year in Las Vegas and was available for the first BMW models just six months later. The digital mobility assistant BMW Connected, which was presented to the public at CES 2016, also found its way into the BMW model series and the customers' mobile devices a few months later. The revolutionary Remote 3D View also celebrated its premiere there shortly before its market launch.

The BMW i3 Urban Suite

For seven years now, the BMW i3 has been a figurehead and an icon when it comes to electric driving pleasure, sustainability and intelligent networking in urban traffic. It is these properties that make it the world's best-selling electric vehicle in the premium compact segment, among other things. With the BMW i3 Urban Suite, which will be used at this year's CES in Las Vegas, the BMW Group is presenting a mobility experience that is tailored to the individual needs of the passenger. For this purpose, a conventional BMW i3 was completely redesigned except for the driver's seat and the dashboard, so that the interior is reminiscent of the relaxed atmosphere of a boutique hotel. The aim was to create a place of wellbeing for the passenger in which he would like to linger - either to relax, to enjoy the on-board entertainment or to be able to work concentratedly in a relaxed atmosphere. This is ensured, among other things, by the large and comfortable seat with footrest, a display that can be folded out of the headlining and a personal sound zone.

Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

With the BMW i3 Urban Suite, the BMW Group is also consistently thinking ahead about your claim to sustainable mobility. The vehicle is also a holistic concept for the responsible use of resources, which in addition to the locally emission-free drive also includes the choice of materials and the manufacturing processes. Recycled materials were used in the fabrics, as was certified wood, olive-tanned leather and floor mats made from recyclable materials, which can be reintegrated into the material cycle in the sense of circular economy. For use as part of the CES, 20 conventional BMW i3s were converted into urban suites in Munich and brought to Las Vegas, where they are also used on the city streets. With a special app, it is easy to order one of the BMW i3 Urban Suites and to be chauffeured to your desired destination. While driving, the BMW Group's innovative and sustainable mobility concept can be experienced up close, which also impressively demonstrates that the size of a vehicle is irrelevant when it comes to luxurious mobility in the future.

Perfect design for individual needs

Sustainable and innovative mobility is not just a matter of technical innovations, but is also reflected in the design. The main goal of the BMW i3 Urban Suite was not just to redesign the interior, but to make it an experience for the passenger. This starts with the boarding. The coach doors of the i3 Urban Suite thus allow access. In order to optimally implement the mobility experience for the passenger, the entire interior except for the driver's area of application was completely redesigned and transformed into a boutique hotel-like atmosphere. For this purpose, the use of leather was largely avoided and textile and wood were used instead. You won't find a back seat in the BMW i3 Urban Suite. This has been replaced by a spacious and comfortable, petrol-colored lounge chair that offers maximum seating comfort. A special listening zone was integrated in the headrest of the lounge chair, which simulates a separate, sealed acoustic area.

Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

This means that the passenger can enjoy his entertainment program undisturbed and can also make phone calls that the chauffeur cannot acoustically follow. Connected to the seat, a small wooden table serves as a storage area including a table lamp that can be switched on via touch control and creates an ambient lighting atmosphere. Since the passenger seat has been dispensed with in the electric vehicle, the legroom for the passenger is more than generous. This can even be extended by the electrically adjustable footrest, which is included. There is no shortage of stowage options for particularly relaxed and comfortable transportation. In the BMW i3 Urban Suite, for example, the passenger will find clothes hangers for a jacket, jacket or coat, a storage space for a bag or laptop between the wooden table and driver's seat, and two Thermo Cup Holders in the center console, which can be used to warm or cool drinks. For optimal work or entertainment, a display folds out of the headliner on request.

Using the integrated entertainment, passengers can watch their most popular shows or films on Amazon Fire TV on the display and thus experience the future of rear-seat entertainment. There are 3 volt charging sockets in several places in the i110 Urban Suite, which ensure that every end device of the passenger is adequately supplied with energy. Driver and passenger are not physically separated from each other as an expression of an open and friendly relationship. However, for the necessary discretion, the display is outside the driver's field of vision.

Rethinking sustainability.

In the sense of responsible use of resources, great importance was attached to the conscious use of materials in the BMW i3 Urban Suite. The table and bag holder were made from oiled oak wood, which comes from certified timber management, and the leather used in the rear is completely pollutant-free thanks to olive tanning. All accents in the interior such as buttons, cup holders and lamps are produced chrome-free. The central theme in the interior is also the use of recycled materials. The fabric used in the vehicle is made from pure PET recyclate. The fleece used under the fabric also consists of at least 70 percent recycled material. In particular, the doormat represents an important step in the direction of the circular economy. The previous manufacturing process included several different types of plastic that could not be separated and reused. Thanks to new processes, these have now been reduced to a combination of materials. It can be completely recycled so that the floor mat can be 100% reintegrated into the material cycle after being used in the vehicle.

Tomorrow's connectivity today.

Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

In addition to comfort and sustainability, the seamless networking of the environment, passengers and vehicles will play a central role for the BMW Group in the mobility of the future. This is also strongly expressed in the BMW i3 Urban Suite. It starts with the fact that the electric vehicle can be easily called up using the app. The passenger can conveniently enter his pick-up location and determine his destination. As soon as he gets into the called vehicle, he can not only connect his iPhone wirelessly to the vehicle as usual, but also display the contents of his mobile device via the mirror function on the fold-out headliner display and work with it. The entertainment options in the BMW i3 Urban Suite are also trend-setting. Amazon Fire TV shows how to access a wide range of content on demand, including controlling that content via Alexa. This integration impressively shows how such formats and content could look in the future and what opportunities this offers, especially with regard to future autonomous driving of levels 4 and 5.

2nd CES 2020 - BMW i Interaction EASE.

Autonomous mobility is also a central topic at CES this year. With the BMW i Interaction EASE, the BMW Group, together with Designworks, is showing a completely new perspective on the topic, thereby emphasizing the culture of innovation of the premium manufacturer. This gives visitors to the BMW stand the opportunity to take a look into a future in which autonomous transportation has long been commonplace. The focus of the BMW i Interaction EASE, whose exterior has been deliberately kept abstract, is on the interior and the implementation of a luxurious mobility experience. High-quality materials, an adapted geometry in combination with the latest technology are designed exclusively for the passenger and his needs, but above all how he can interact with an intelligent and autonomous vehicle and use the travel time as sensibly as possible.

"The BMW i Interaction EASE shows how mobility could feel as soon as autonomous driving is everyday life: luxurious, human and intuitive," explains Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. "The passenger begins his journey with the feeling that he has already arrived."

The interaction with the vehicle must therefore not only be made as simple as possible, but also intuitive and human. To enable this kind of exchange, the BMW i Interaction EASE uses the BMW Natural Interaction presented at the Mobile World Congress 2019 - a multimodal combination of different operating modes. This includes the interaction options already known from the current BMW models via touch controls, gesture control and the exchange of natural language with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

An absolute novelty in the BMW i Interaction EASE, however, is that the sensors and artificial intelligence of the vehicle can also recognize and interpret the driver's looks. The fusion of the most innovative technologies and design creates an emotional and almost human-like relationship between man and machine.

BMW Natural Interaction - the next stage of development.

With the BMW i Interaction EASE, the BMW Group is opening a new chapter in the interaction between man and machine. Because for the first time, real multimodality creates a completely new interaction experience, the aim of which is to be as simple and natural as possible, and almost human. In addition to the linguistic exchange with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and a new type of gesture control, eye recognition in particular opens up new opportunities to respond to the needs and wishes of the passenger.

The user does not have to laboriously learn specific commands in various modalities. Rather, the vehicle's artificial intelligence (AI) processes the acoustic and visual information from the various sensors and interprets them accordingly in the context of the driving situation, time, location and vehicle signals. If the latter fixes an object outside the vehicle, this is recognized by the AI as a selection and registered.

This way of interaction is modeled on the interpersonal dialogue, in which the view makes it clear who or what is addressed or meant. With the help of a subsequent command by voice or gesture, the desired interaction with the targeted object starts. For example, information about certain buildings can be obtained.

The Panorama Head-Up Display, which extends like a windshield across the entire width of the front, plays a central role. Like a second, digital information level, it overlaps the real world and thus functions as an oversized augmented reality user interface. Depending on the external environment, it can display additional information on the windscreen. Thanks to the 5G network of the vehicle, the intelligence in the vehicle knows where it is and has information about the surrounding buildings, shops and other objects and can offer this to the user if required.

First functions in the BMW iNEXT.

BMW Natural Interaction prepares the way for the next level of natural operation in the vehicle and beyond vehicle boundaries. The first functionalities of BMW Natural Interaction will be available in the BMW iNEXT.

Intuitive perfection as the main feature in the interior.

For the user, the experience should not only begin as soon as he has taken a seat in the vehicle, but already on the way there. This is made possible with the BMW i Interaction EASE by the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This recognizes the passenger when approaching, welcomes him with a light display and guides him inside to the two seats with light accents.

The leather-free interior looks like a comfortable living space that supports the feeling of having already arrived. The soft, comfortable seats with three-dimensional knitting technology ensure high comfort and come to life by touch.

Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

The room is laterally limited by glass surfaces that are either transparent or, thanks to the SmartGlass function, isolate the seating area from the outside world and thus protect the privacy of the passengers.

The focal point in the interior of the BMW i Interaction EASE is the large panorama head-up display, which is located directly in front of the seating area. It offers the passenger three viewing modes - "Explore", "Entertain" and "Ease" - which change the interior depending on the selection, display information about the outside world and provide entertainment, privacy or relaxation.

Im Explore Mode puts the focus on the surroundings outside the vehicle, the augmented reality technology enables the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to place information relevant to the passenger on the display and at the same time in the line of sight on the real world. Upon request, additional information or interaction options with the nearer and further surroundings are displayed. A focused view of the overlay and further information appear on the display. An affirmative gesture was enough to dive deeper into the interaction.

Im Entertain mode the focus is on the experience in the vehicle. The outside world is hidden by the darkened side panels and films can be viewed on the panorama head-up display, for example. The content shown there is enhanced by ambient lighting in the interior as on a stage in light and color and allows a complete immersion in the media experience.

Im Ease mode the vehicle turns into a place of rest and relaxation. By touching the intelligent material, the seat adopts the so-called zero gravity position and gives the passenger the feeling of almost floating. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant darkens the panorama head-up display and makes the side surfaces non-transparent. A light production bathes the interior in a soothing light and a corresponding sound production bathes the room in a pleasant soundscape.

With the sound of the BMW Vision M NEXT, Hans Zimmer and the BMW sound designer Renzo Vitale have given a first impression of the BOOST moment. The challenge for the BMW i Interaction EASE was to transform the EASE moment into an authentic and emotional experience. "The sound subtly accompanies the interaction between passenger and vehicle and thus supports the unique BMW experience," says Renzo Vitale. The sound of the BMW i Interaction EASE demonstrates the breadth of the collaboration with Hans Zimmer, who as composer and curator is driving the development of the BMW IconicSoundsElectric.

The BMW X7 ZeroG Lounger.

With the BMW i Interaction EASE, the BMW Group provides an outlook on the future in which autonomous transportation has long been part of everyday life. With the BMW X7 ZeroG Lounger, the premium manufacturer impressively demonstrates that these are not just studies, but also concrete concepts. Because the seat, which for the first time enables an absolutely individual lying and relaxing experience in a BMW vehicle, will definitely go into series production in the coming years.

Two BMW X7s are equipped with a ZeroG Lounger at this year's CES in Las Vegas and are available for test drives there. If you take a seat in the comfort seat, you have the option of moving it back to a comfortable lying position of 40 or 60 degrees.

Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

The seat belt, which is also integrated in the seat, adapts to the respective lying position and thus offers maximum safety even while driving. In fact, the BMW X7 ZeroG Lounger already meets all the necessary safety standards, which are met by new and innovative safety concepts. In addition to the integration of the seat belt in the seat, this also includes a Cocoon airbag, which protects the passenger holistically in the event of an accident, and efficient energy dissipation via the seat rail in the event of a crash.

Manufactured from high-quality materials, the ZeroG Lounger is not only designed for the highest comfort experience for the passenger, but also supports them with their needs while driving. In the lying position, he has the opportunity to use the entertainment program, which is shown on a display integrated in the headlining. If desired, the driver can also display direction information there while driving or can see when the vehicle turns using animated content. This not only improves spatial orientation, but can also reduce motion sickness by a factor of 4. Passengers do not have to do without the smartphone either.

Storage and inductive charging of the respective device is possible at any time. Thanks to the sophisticated design, the passenger can conveniently look at the display of their smartphone in any adjustable sitting or lying position of the ZeroG Lounger.

5G - the future of networking.

The BMW Group has consistently faced the challenges of digitalization right from the start. She has also significantly promoted and helped to use and further develop them in the automotive sector.

True to the motto: "Act like a start-up - deliver like a grown-up", the premium manufacturer has also dedicated itself to the topic of 5G. The new mobile radio standard catapults the mobile network into a new dimension, thanks to its 10 to 100 times higher bandwidth compared to current standards and minimal latencies.

With 5G, a completely new level of connectivity and high-speed data exchange will be achieved, which will be a key driver for the entire industry. In the automotive sector in particular, it will significantly accelerate the development and establishment of automated driving and will sometimes make it possible.

5G in the new BMW iNext.

Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

The BMW Group has been pioneering the implementation and integration of 5G-capable applications in its models for some time. When the first BMW iNext models are launched in mid-2021, they will have 5G-capable technology on board. This makes the BMW Group the first premium manufacturer worldwide to offer the new radio standard in a vehicle. Further 5G integration in other series will follow shortly afterwards, but will differ from model and configuration.

The 5G capability of the BMW iNext is enabled via the SIM card integrated in the vehicle, so that the customer can use the new technology in their vehicle even without a suitably equipped smartphone. The new generation of the telematics component with 5G technology is being developed in cooperation with HARMAN Samsung and integrated into the new wiring system architecture by the BMW Group itself.

Construction and milestone for the mobility of tomorrow.

Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

The use of 3G technologies is essential as a basic requirement for highly automated driving (from level 5), as is already the case with the BMW iNext. Due to the increase in complex functions, such as driver assistance and partially automated driving functions, the amount of data that has to be processed in real time in the vehicle itself and also has to be exchanged with the backend increases accordingly. In order to be able to implement safety-relevant vehicle functions in a vehicle such as the BMW iNEXT, at least three factors must be guaranteed: low latency, secure network coverage and an assigned minimum data rate for specific applications. All of this can be achieved with the use of 5G technology. For the first time, the new generation of the telematics component that the BMW Group developed in cooperation with HARMAN Samsung also supports the high-precision Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This not only makes geopositioning of the vehicle more precise and reliable, but also complies with legal requirements (Automotive Safety Integrity Level B according to ISO 26262 standard).

GNSS is also indispensable for the implementation of partially automated driving functions, such as will be available on the BMW iNEXT. The structure of the telematics components is also modular. The BMW Group thus ensures additional flexibility in terms of hardware and software, which makes the vehicle future-proof in the long term, regardless of the fact that innovation cycles are accelerating more and more.

With the help of 5G, exclusive video content can be played back in high quality up to a resolution of 4K. The same applies to video conferences, which, in addition to a high data rate, also require low latencies. Above all, applications where it was previously hardly possible to stream them into the vehicle in real time benefit from the possibilities that 5G has to offer. Cloud-based gaming becomes an interesting application in the vehicle because it can be streamed without delay.

Quantum leaps in traffic safety.

However, the BMW Group does not want to limit the innovative use of 5G technology and its possible applications to just its own vehicle fleet. Rather, one of the premium manufacturer's stated goals is to make traffic more efficient and safe for all road users. Since July 1, 2019, the BMW Group has been the first car manufacturer to make its anonymized, safety-relevant traffic data available to anyone interested for non-commercial use.

“When it comes to road safety, there are no competitors, only partners. The sharing of traffic data and vehicle networking via C-V2X can immediately and across the board improve safety for all road users, ”explains Christoph Grote, Senior Vice President Electronics BMW Group.

(C-V2X stands for Cellular Vehicular to Everything). Two types of high-speed networking are required to implement and implement cooperative and intelligent transport systems (C-IST). First, safety-relevant traffic data must be made available to all parties active in the traffic system via a neutral server platform. This must be guaranteed across manufacturers, across industries, and also in exchange with transport institutions or authorities. Second, the networking of all road users is necessary. This is the only way to ensure that they communicate directly (peer-to-peer) and in real time without having to rely on a mobile phone connection.

Info: The BMW Group at CES 2020 in Las Vegas!

The BMW Group, in collaboration with Qualcomm, is showing how this kind of application can be put into practice at CES as part of a live demonstration. The aim of the demonstration is to demonstrate the enormous future potential of C-V2X to protect less protected road users from accidents.

Here, a specially equipped BMW i3 will approach a pedestrian with a smartphone that also supports 5G. As soon as the distance between the two falls below a certain level, warnings are displayed both in the vehicle and on the mobile device. An application that can be of great importance, especially in road traffic, for example when a driver's line of sight is blocked or restricted. Another advantage: In practical use, all road users, in addition to vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, scooters or e-scooters can be networked via C-V2X.
