BMW i4 M Performance - M-GmbH goes electric!

(Info: Pictures show the BMW i4) The electrification of the automobile is now really gaining momentum. BMW M boss has now also declared Markus Flaschthat his company will bring an M Performace variant of the all-electric i4 onto the market. However, this version will not be a pure M model, but a performance-enhanced version of the i4, which does not focus on racetrack suitability, but on everyday sportiness. According to M CEO Markus Flasch, it is still a major challenge to bring a purely electric M model onto the market, as the weight of the batteries and the sound of an e-vehicle are not yet in line with the philosophy of the M division. In addition, they do not want to replace the pure M models with electric versions, because customers still want sporty-sounding combustion engines when it comes to BMW models for the racetrack or sporty, ambitious driving.

Look again with giant kidney!

Another point is the batteries, which first have to be further advanced in order to satisfy the hunger for performance of the HP-spoiled customers. The rapid acceleration and prestigious power are still too much at the expense of the vehicle's range. In order to prevent the problem, further research and development work has to be done, because e-mobility is still in its infancy. Electrification or not, in the end it is not only the drive, but also the optics that determine the success of a vehicle. Already the new M3 / M4 models split minds with their heart-shaped giant kidney, and the new i4 M Performance probably doesn't do without the rather controversial design element. From "Coffin grill" up to "Mickey Mouse ears“The comments about the new grill on the net are enough. By and large, the lines of the i4 M Performance will correspond to those of the 4 Series Gran Coupé, although electrical-specific decorative elements, such as a blue decorative strip on the side, may find their way into the production version.

Performance data from the electric drive are not known

It is also possible that aerodynamically optimized rims are offered, which ensure a particularly low air resistance value, as a result of which the range and acceleration of the vehicle are optimized. It remains to be seen what the finished production model will look like, which may be launched at the end of 2021. In general, no details about engine power, range and battery power have been leaked yet, but experts assume that the mark of 380 kW (517 PS) and 800 Newton meters of maximum torque will be targeted. This would make the i4 M Performance significantly stronger than the current M3 Competition, which has to get by with 510 PS and significantly less torque than the planned i4 M Performance. However, electrification has a catch, as the empty weight of the car is likely to be almost 2 tons.

Our conclusion on the i4 M Performance:

That is SUV level, and certainly not beneficial for range, handling and sporting ambitions. There is still no information about the maximum speed, but it should probably be a sealed off 250 km / h. This means you can be on the move quickly in an electric BMW, as long as the high speed doesn't drain the battery in an instant. The planned vehicle is certainly a right and courageous step into the future, but it remains to be seen whether the sound and tuning-crazy clientele of M GmbH will take such a car seriously.
