One year before its market launch, the series development process for the BMW iX is proceeding according to plan. After the final design of the BMW iX was presented at #NEXTGen 2020 in Munich, the prototypes of the new technology flagship are now starting their final winter testing in northern Scandinavia. The endurance test, which takes place under extreme weather conditions beyond the Arctic Circle, is used, among other things, to fine-tune drive and chassis control systems. In addition, the electric motors and all-wheel drive as well as the charging technology, the high-voltage battery and the heat management are subjected to an intensive load test in extreme cold.

The set-up and test drives take the BMW iX prototypes to the northernmost regions of Europe. On lonely roads in Finnish Lapland and up to the North Cape on the Norwegian island of Magerøya, both the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology and the chassis control systems have to prove their functionality and reliability in particularly demanding road and weather conditions. Here, test engineers primarily test the interaction between the drive system and chassis control systems on roadways with a low coefficient of friction. Unpaved slopes, icy roads and ice surfaces specially prepared for the test drives at the edge of the Arctic Circle offer you ideal conditions for precisely coordinating the control of the motors, the electric all-wheel drive and the chassis control systems right into the longitudinal and transverse dynamic limits.

modular, scalable future construction kit

The BMW iX is the first model based on a new, modular, scalable future construction kit from the BMW Group. It was designed from the start for purely electric mobility and, with the latest development stage of BMW eDrive technology and intelligent lightweight construction and optimized aerodynamic properties, sets new standards for efficiency in the competitive environment of luxurious Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV). Two electric motors together generate a maximum output that, according to current calculations, is more than 370 kW / 500 PS. The endurance test at the North Cape also includes the final tuning of the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive and its adaptive adjustment of the drive torque for each axle, which optimizes the efficiency of the BMW iX at all times in addition to driving stability and traction. The aim of the development is to achieve an outstandingly low combined power consumption of less than 21 kWh per 100 kilometers in the WLTP test cycle and a range of more than 600 kilometers, also determined in accordance with the WLTP.

BMW eDrive technology at the limit

The components of BMW eDrive technology are faced with particular challenges during winter testing. The high-voltage battery and charging technology complete their practical test for everyday use in the dead of winter at extremely low outside temperatures. The displays, which provide information on the charge status, range and operating status, as well as the thermal management, which ensures that the drive and high-voltage battery is always at an optimal operating temperature, also show that they are insensitive to extreme temperatures below zero. The intensive test program demands more from the prototype of the BMW iX in a very short time than the later series vehicles have to cope with in their entire life cycle. With the evaluation of all test results and the subsequent fine-tuning of all drive and chassis components of the BMW iX, the course will be set in the coming months for the start of a new era of sheer driving pleasure.

Thomas Wachsmuth - He has been an integral part of tuningblog.eu since 2013. His passion for cars is so intense that he invests every available penny in them. While he dreams of a BMW E31 850CSI and a Hennessey 6x6 Ford F-150, he currently drives a rather inconspicuous BMW 540i (G31/LCI). His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
