BMW M Motorsport returns to the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the 2024 Hours of Le Mans (FRA) in the 24 season. One year after its debut season in 8 in the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the new BMW M Hybrid V2023 is also facing the top-class competition in the hypercar category in the official FIA World Endurance Championship. On Monday, July 25, the first BMW M Motorsport prototype since the legendary BMW V12 LMR completed its first laps during the rollout in Varano de Melegari (ITA).

from 2023 in the IMSA series

“The decision to use the BMW M Hybrid V8 in the IMSA series from 2023 and also in the WEC in 2024 is a milestone for the project,” says Franciscus van Meel, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH. “Even during my first term as Managing Director of BMW M, I was able to admire and enjoy the extraordinary flair that the 24 Hours of Le Mans has to offer. The anticipation of fighting for overall victories as BMW M Motorsport for the first time in decades is correspondingly high in this classic event and in the entire endurance world championship. The BMW M Hybrid V8 represents a turning point at BMW M in the direction of electrification. The IMSA series in North America and the WEC, which is starting worldwide, are the perfect platforms to show with our prototype how exciting electrified BMW M vehicles will be in the future.”

Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, says: “Due to the very tight schedule for the LMDh project, the plan from the outset was to focus on one area in the first 2023 season. The IMSA series is perfect for this. Of course, our medium-term goal was to drive on two tracks with the BMW M Hybrid V8 and also to use the large platform of the WEC with the 24 Hours of Le Mans. We are now working towards this with full motivation in parallel with our program in North America. We already took the next important step this Monday. The vehicle has successfully completed its rollout at Dallara in Varano de Melegari. Now the intensive testing work for the race premiere in January 2023 in Daytona begins.”

The BMW M Hybrid V8 not only used the Dallara test track for an initial function test, but is also on the road there for several days this week. BMW M works drivers Connor De Phillippi (USA) and Sheldon van der Linde (RSA) take turns at the wheel. "It was an honor and a pleasure to be able to do the first laps in the BMW M Hybrid V8," said De Phillippi after the rollout on Monday. “It was a historic day for BMW M Motorsport within the LMDh project. We tested all functions step by step and were able to do a few laps at almost full power towards the end of the day. That's a good record for a rollout. Many thanks to everyone who is working hard on this project: at BMW M Motorsport, BMW M Team RLL, BMW M Team RMG and Dallara!”

further test deployments in Europe

Further test runs in Europe are scheduled for August, before BMW M Team RLL and a BMW M Motorsport team of experts in North America begin the specific preparations for the IMSA season in September. Numerous BMW M works drivers will be deployed during the test phase. The cockpit crews for the 2023 IMSA season will be decided at a later date. This also applies to the choice of the WEC team and the drivers for the 2024 season. The year after next, BMW M Motorsport will be returning to Le Mans with a prototype for the first time since 1999. Back then, Joachim Winkelhock (GER), Pierluigi Martini (ITA) and Yannick Dalmas (FRA) celebrated overall victory in the BMW V12 LMR after 24 hours. In the same year, the vehicle also triumphed at the 12 Hours of Sebring (USA), where its successor, the BMW M Hybrid V8, will compete in 2023.
