BMW continues the tradition of particularly sporty compact models and presents the new benchmark for brand-typical driving pleasure in the premium segment of this vehicle class. The new BMW 2 Series Coupé stands for sportiness in a particularly concentrated form - with a vehicle concept that is consistently geared towards dynamism, an athletic design, powerful engines and high-quality chassis technology. Its unique appearance, an in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine at the top of the drive portfolio, rear-wheel drive and its chassis components transferred from the BMW 4 Series ensure maximum differentiation from the compact BMW 1 Series and at the same time form the basis for outstanding performance characteristics in the competitive environment. The new BMW 2 Series Coupé thus follows in the footsteps of the legendary BMW 02, with which the recent history of the brand's compact and fascinatingly sporty two-door model began 55 years ago.
BMW M240i Coupe (G42)
In addition to noticeably increased driving dynamics, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé offers a refined premium ambience in the interior as well as the latest innovations in the areas of operation and networking. The progress compared to the previous model is also marked by a significantly expanded range of driver assistance systems. The new BMW 2 Series Coupé will have its world premiere on July 8, 2021 as part of the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Great Britain.
The compact four-seater is produced at the BMW Group plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. When it is launched on the market at the beginning of 2022, a performance automobile from BMW M GmbH will be at the top of the range. The new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 8,8 - 8,1 l / 100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 200 - 185 g / km according to WLTP) has a 275 kW / 374 PS in-line six-cylinder engine and intelligent all-wheel drive for a particularly emotionally charged driving experience. There is also a choice of model variants with four-cylinder petrol and four-cylinder diesel drives, which bring their power to the road via the rear wheels.

The youthful, fresh and extroverted charisma of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé goes hand in hand with well-engineered and perfectly balanced driving characteristics. His vehicle concept is consistently geared towards agile handling that is precisely controllable even in highly dynamic situations.
Compact dimensions, intelligent lightweight construction for the body and chassis, a static torsional rigidity that is up to 12 percent higher than that of the previous model, an almost perfectly balanced 50:50 axle load distribution and optimized aerodynamic properties offer ideal conditions for an outstandingly sporty vehicle character. The agility, steering precision and cornering dynamics of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé have been significantly increased compared to the previous model. At the same time, everyday and long-distance suitability benefit from optimized ride and acoustic comfort.
Individual proportions, athletic shapes.
The external dimensions of the new compact sports car already offer ideal conditions for high driving dynamics. With a vehicle length of 4 millimeters and a width of 537 millimeters, the dimensions of the previous model are exceeded by 1 and 838 millimeters respectively. The vehicle height, on the other hand, is 105 millimeters lower at 64 millimeters. The wheelbase, which has been extended by 1 to 390 millimeters, and the large track widths also contribute to the powerful and athletic appearance of the new BMW 28 Series Coupé. With values of 2 millimeters (an increase of 51 millimeters) on the front axle and 2 millimeters (an increase of 741 millimeters) on the rear axle (BMW M1i xDrive Coupé: plus 575 millimeters at the front, plus 54 millimeters at the rear), optimal conditions for high curve dynamics created.
The powerful proportions in the classic three-box design of the engine compartment, passenger cell and luggage compartment signal the dynamic potential of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé. Athletically modeled surfaces and dynamic lines in the brand's new design language are an expression of pure driving pleasure. Exclusive design features underline the unmistakable vehicle character.
Striking front: headlights and BMW kidney grille in an exclusive design.
Three-dimensionally modeled surfaces, triangular shapes and diagonal lines characterize the striking front view of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé. Wide-flared wheel arches and a powerfully curved power dome in the center of the bonnet provide clear indications of its dynamic driving characteristics. The BMW kidney is aligned horizontally. Instead of the classic kidney grille, it has vertically arranged air flaps that are opened electrically when the engine needs more cooling. The standard full-LED headlights are arranged far on the outside. Based on the legendary models of the BMW 02 series, they are designed as single round headlights. Adaptive LED headlights with glare-free high beam assistant BMW Selective Beam are optionally available. They are also available as M lights Shadow Line with darkened inserts.

The side view of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé is characterized by a long bonnet, short overhangs and a recessed passenger cell, which is supported in the rear area on powerfully flared wheel arches. Large window areas, the dynamically sloping roof line and the short luggage compartment opening into a clearly exposed air spoiler are further typical features of the compact sports car. Precisely guided lines make the surfaces appear particularly athletic.
The powerful rear is structured by horizontally aligned surfaces. The stylishly darkened rear lights, which are arranged far to the outside, have compact contours. Their surfaces are formed by three-dimensionally modeled luminous bodies. The LED technology used for all light functions is thus presented in a particularly high-quality manner. Independent design features for the M Sport model and the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé set additional accents for dynamism. Model-specific M Performance Parts are also available in the Original BMW Accessories range.
Sporty flair and refined premium ambience in the interior.
The driver-oriented cockpit design and the modern control panel on the center console underline the sporty flair in the interior of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé. The standard equipment with sports seats and a sports leather steering wheel also contributes to the intense driving experience. The indentation in the rear area of the roof line, the high center console and the harmoniously merging surface design of the instrument panel and door panels give the driver and front passenger an all-encompassing feeling of space. Due to the individual seat characteristics of the two rear seats, the occupants can also enjoy sporty driving pleasure there.
High-quality materials and precise workmanship ensure a premium ambience that is significantly more refined than the previous model. The door and rear paneling are structured by dynamic lines. Interior trims in the new dark graphite matt finish are standard equipment. The trapezoidal accent surfaces above the armrests in the doors are a new design feature. In conjunction with the ambient light option, your perforated surfaces are stylishly backlit.
The standard equipment includes fabric / Sensatec equipment. In the M Sport model and the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé, there are other specific design features such as the M leather steering wheel and padded knee pads on the center console as well as Alcantara / Sensatec equipment. Surfaces in the Perforated Sensatec variant and Vernasca leather upholstery are optionally available. Electrically adjustable sports seats with memory function on the driver's side, M sports seats with integrated headrests, seat and steering wheel heating are also available as special equipment.
The standard equipment of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé also includes acoustic glazing for the windscreen and 3-zone automatic air conditioning. In addition to the ambient light option, a Harman Kardon surround sound system is also available as an option. The glass sliding / tilting roof, which is also optional, offers a transparent area that is almost 20 percent larger than the previous model.
The luggage compartment volume of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé is 390 liters. The loading sill has been lowered by 35 millimeters compared to the previous model. Additional variability is created by the folding function of the standard rear seat backrest, which can be divided in a 40:20:40 ratio. A detachable trailer hitch is available as an option. The maximum permissible trailer load is 1 kilograms.
High-quality chassis with technology transfer from the BMW 4 Series.
Particularly high-quality chassis components, originally designed for the models of the BMW 4 Series and tailored to specific models, guarantee confident driving behavior. The double-joint tension strut front axle and the five-link rear axle have a weight and rigidity-optimized design. As standard, stroke-dependent shock absorbers optimize both sportiness and driving comfort. They generate additional damping that is dependent on the spring travel, which controls the structure when driving over large bumps and prevents excessive immersion. The system reacts to slight bumps in the road with low damping forces, which ensure a high level of comfort.
An M sports suspension is available as an option, which has tighter characteristics of the stroke-dependent damping and suspension and also includes variable sports steering. It also serves as the basis for the model-specific chassis of the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé. The top model also has an M sports brake system and an M sports differential in the rear axle drive as standard. As an option, it can also be equipped with an Adaptive M chassis, the shock absorbers of which are electronically controlled.
The new BMW 2 Series Coupé rolls off the production line on 17-inch light-alloy wheels as standard. 18-inch M light alloy wheels with mixed tires are part of the M Sport model. The new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé has 19-inch M light alloy wheels as standard, which are also fitted with mixed tires. High-performance tires are also available as an option. The M Performance Parts range includes light alloy wheels up to 20 inches in size.
With four and six cylinders for unique driving pleasure.
With an in-line six-cylinder engine at the top of its drive portfolio, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé has a power source that is unique in its vehicle class. The performance characteristics, revving and smooth running of the 3,0-liter engine in the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé underpin the claim to represent the maximum in sportiness in the premium compact segment. With a maximum output of 275 kW / 374 PS, the engine exceeds the drive unit of the previous model by 25 kW / 34 PS. Its maximum torque is 500 Nm. The new BMW M100i xDrive Coupé completes the sprint from standstill to 240 km / h in 4,3 seconds.
In the BMW 220i Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 6,8 - 6,3 l / 100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 155 - 144 g / km according to WLTP), a new four-cylinder gasoline engine is used, whose emissions behavior is enhanced by an in the exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head is further optimized. With a maximum output of 135 kW / 184 PS and a maximum torque of 300 Nm, it accelerates the new BMW 220i Coupé from zero to 7,5 km / h in 100 seconds. Another 180 kW / 245 PS version of the new four-cylinder gasoline engine powers the BMW 230i Coupé (vehicle is not yet available for sale; fuel consumption and CO2 values are not yet available), which will be added to the model range from summer 2022.
Two-stage turbocharging and 48-volt mild hybrid technology help the four-cylinder diesel engine of the new BMW 220d Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 5,1 - 4,7 l / 100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 132 - 122 g / km according to WLTP) to a clear plus in pulling power and efficiency compared to the previous model. The 2,0 liter drive unit mobilizes a maximum output of 140 kW / 190 PS and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. The new BMW 220d Coupé accelerates from zero to 6,9 km / h in 100 seconds.
All engines are combined with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. The optional 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission (standard in the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé) offers, in addition to even greater shift dynamics and shift paddles on the steering wheel, launch control and a sprint function. This ensures traction-optimized acceleration from standstill or maximum dynamics during intermediate sprints and overtaking maneuvers. The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission is also part of the M Sport Package Pro. This special equipment is offered in combination with the M Sport model and also includes 19-inch M light alloy wheels, an M Sport brake system, a front spoiler lip and an M rear spoiler.
Significantly increased variety of driver assistance systems.
In the new BMW 2 Series Coupé, there is a significantly larger selection of driver assistance systems than in the previous model for added safety and comfort. The standard equipment includes the front collision warning, the speed limit info, the lane departure warning and the cruise control with braking function.
The range of systems available as optional equipment includes the Driving Assistant with lane change, rear collision and cross traffic warning at the rear, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function including manual Speed Limit Assist as well as Park Distance Control, the Reversing Assistant, the reversing camera, Surround View and Remote 3D view. For the first time, the BMW 2 Series Coupé also features the BMW Head-Up Display, which projects driving-related information onto the windshield, and the BMW Drive Recorder.
Advanced networking and new digital services.
Even with the standard equipment, the driver and passengers in the new BMW 2 Series Coupé benefit from the extended options associated with the use of the BMW Operating System 7. Depending on the situation, the customer can choose between touch operation on the Control Display, the tried and tested BMW controller, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel and voice control. Advanced digital services are also available, including the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the BMW Digital Key, Connected Music and remote software upgrades.
The standard BMW Live Cockpit includes the iDrive operating system with an 8,8-inch control display and a 5,1-inch color display in the instrument cluster. The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional offers a completely digital display network. It comprises a high-resolution instrument cluster with a screen diagonal of 12,3 inches behind the steering wheel and a 10,25-inch control display.
The cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps is part of the BMW Live Cockpit Plus and BMW Live Cockpit Professional options. It offers a particularly fast and precise calculation of routes and arrival times, the updating of real-time traffic data at short intervals and free text input for the selection of navigation destinations. The optional smartphone integration enables Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to be used with the vehicle's operating system. With the Remote Software Upgrades function, improved vehicle functions and additional digital services can be loaded "over-the-air" into the vehicle.
