With 550 hp and less weight: that's the new BMW M3 CS (G80)!

The BMWs M GmbH is consistently expanding its product range with particularly attractive special models in 2023. The new BMW M3 CS embodies the racing passion character of the successful high-performance automobiles in the premium segment of the middle class in an even more intense form. Intelligent lightweight construction with a large number of components made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), increased engine power, model-specific chassis tuning, exclusive design features and equipment specifically optimized for an emotionally powerful performance experience on the race track are combined with the functionality and suitability for everyday use of the BMW M3 Combined sedan. As a result, the new BMW arrives M3 CS to its own profile, with which it also creates a puristic and fascinating M feeling on the road with every kilometer.

BMW M3 CS (G80)

The drive concept of the new BMW M3 CS includes a 405 kW/550 hp straight six-cylinder engine, an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and the intelligent all-wheel drive system M xDrive. This combination enables acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 3,4 seconds and impressively superior driving characteristics that can be experienced in four seats. The new BMW M3 CS will be produced in a limited edition at the BMW Group plant in Munich from March 2023. Its market launch will start flowing in March 2023. The most important sales regions for the new special model are the USA, Germany, Great Britain and Japan.

More power, less weight, fascinating performance.

More power, less weight - this is the formula that gives the new BMW M3 CS its fascinating performance characteristics and its exclusive charisma. It is powered by a specifically further developed version of the six-cylinder in-line engine developed for the BMW M3/BMW M4 series with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics. The 3,0-liter drive also forms the basis for the engine of the BMW M4 GT3, which drove to the championship win in the DTM in the 2022 season.

Accordingly, the engine of the new BMW M3 CS also has numerous technology details derived directly from racing. Its crankcase features a linerless, closed-deck design, is extremely rigid and is therefore designed for a particularly high combustion pressure. Weight-optimized cylinder liners with an iron coating applied using the arc wire spraying process (LDS) reduce friction losses.

With its extraordinarily high torsional strength, the forged lightweight crankshaft promotes power development and engine revving. Its cylinder head core is manufactured using a 3D printing process. This makes it possible to arrange the course of the coolant channels in a way that cannot be realized with conventional metal casting processes and is optimal for temperature management. Like the cooling system, the oil supply is also designed for the special challenges of use on the race track.

With these special features, the engine of the new BMW M3 CS is consistently geared towards high speeds and maximum power development. Its great potential made it possible to increase the maximum output by 3 kW/30 hp to 40 kW/405 hp compared to the drive of the BMW M550 Competition Sedan with M xDrive. The extra power goes hand in hand with unlimited qualities in terms of stability and durability and is realized through targeted adjustments to the M TwinPower Turbo technology. The focus is on increasing the maximum boost pressure of the two mono-scroll turbochargers from 1,7 bar to 2,1 bar and model-specific tuning of the engine control.

In addition, a model-specific engine mount with a higher spring rate ensures a particularly tight connection between the drive unit and the vehicle structure. As a result, the driver's load request is answered with an even more spontaneous engine response and direct transmission of his power to the drive train. Already between 2 750 and 5 950 min-1 the engine of the new BMW M3 CS provides its maximum torque of 650 Nm. It reaches its peak performance at a speed of 6 rpm-1, the maximum speed of the drive is 7 200 min-1.

The specific performance characteristics are characterized by a continuous development of power up to high engine speeds. It is accompanied by the emotionally powerful sound generated by the two-pipe exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps, a weight-optimized titanium rear silencer and the two pairs of tailpipes painted matt black that are typical of M. In the SPORT and SPORT+ modes that can be selected for the engine characteristics in the M Setup menu, the acoustic presence of the drive increases to a sound characteristic unmistakably inspired by a racetrack atmosphere, which effectively stages the gear changes and the associated jumps in engine speed in particular.

Outstanding power brought perfectly to the road: 8-speed M Steptronic transmission, M xDrive, active M differential.

The engine of the new BMW M3 CS transmits its drive torque to an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. It is operated with an M-specific gear selector switch on the center console and carbon-fibre shift paddles on the steering wheel. The driver can use the Drivelogic button integrated in the gear selector switch to influence the shifting characteristics of the transmission. You can choose between a comfort-oriented, a sports and a setting optimized for track use.

Traction and agility of the new BMW M3 CS benefit from the all-wheel drive system M xDrive. With the help of an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, it continuously and fully variably distributes the drive torque between the front and rear wheels. The optimized oil supply to the multi-disc clutch enables enduring all-wheel drive performance, even when driven intensively on the racetrack. With its rear-wheel-focused design and in combination with the fully variable active M differential in the rear axle drive, the M xDrive system supports the typical M feeling when accelerating and when cornering dynamically.

In addition to the basic 4WD setting, the driver can use the M Setup menu to select the 4WD Sport mode, in which an even higher proportion of the drive torque is sent to the rear wheels. When the driving stability control DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) is deactivated, the 2WD mode is also available. The exclusive transmission of the drive torque to the rear wheels and the absence of stabilizing interventions by the control systems help experienced drivers to have a particularly active driving experience.

The interaction of the engine, transmission and M xDrive enables impressive acceleration values. The new BMW M100 CS accelerates from zero to 3 km/h in 3,4 seconds, and 11,1 seconds are needed to accelerate from zero to 200 km/h. The intermediate sprint from 80 to 120 km/h takes 2,6 seconds (4th gear) or 3,3 seconds (5th gear). The top speed of the BMW M3 CS, which comes standard with the M Driver's Package, is electronically limited to 302 km/h.

Chassis technology and driving stability control with model-specific tuning, track tires as standard.

The chassis technology of the new BMW M3 CS is precisely matched to the performance characteristics of the engine, the vehicle concept and its weight balance. Furthermore, the model-specific settings of the DSC driving stability control and the M Dynamic Mode are geared towards the special requirements of highly dynamic use on the race track. Independent axle kinematics as well as model-specific wheel camber values, shock absorbers, additional springs and stabilizers optimize the steering precision, the transmission of cornering forces, the response of the suspension and damping as well as the wheel control.
