Superior performance meets maximum individuality: the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive is the most exclusive vehicle character from the new generation of BMW M automobiles for the premium mid-range segment. Its 373 kW / 510 PS in-line six-cylinder engine and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system guarantee superior dynamism. M typical design features and a new wing bow convertible top create the image of a high-performance sports car with individual aesthetics, the particular fascination of which is particularly evident when driving open-top. The direct contact with the sun and the airstream, as well as the direct perception of the engine sound, ensure a particularly intense performance experience on the four seats of the new BMW M4 Competition Cabrio with M xDrive.

BMW M4 Competition Convertible

The new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive will be produced at the BMW plant in Dingolfing from July 2021, where all model variants of the new BMW M4 Coupé, the BMW M5 and the BMW M8 as well as the new BMW 4 Series Convertible will roll off the assembly line.

Exterior design: innovative flat bow convertible top, dynamic lines, independent charisma.

The new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive reveals its character, which is inspired by both exclusive driving pleasure and racing, at first glance. Its new surface bow convertible top, in conjunction with the clear design language of the body, creates a puristic and emotionally charged aesthetic. The hood combines the functional advantages of a retractable hardtop with the classically elegant aesthetics of a textile roof and thus offers an ideal combination of both worlds. It is characterized by its weight around 40 percent less than the retractable hardtop of the previous model.

With its electric drive, the convertible top can be opened or closed within 18 seconds at the touch of a button while driving. When driving open-top, the luggage compartment volume is increased by 80 to 300 liters. A variable convertible top compartment also offers the option of expanding the storage volume to 385 liters when the roof is closed. With the roof open as well as closed, the dynamic lines of the body create an independent, sporty and elegant look. M-specific design features that are consistently based on the functional requirements of a high-performance sports car set clear signals for superior performance. At the front of the vehicle, all lines run towards the large, vertically aligned BMW kidney grille. Together with the large-format side openings, it guarantees a sufficient supply of cooling air for the drive technology and the braking system at all times, even in highly dynamic driving situations. The flat headlights produce low and high beams with LED units as standard. Adaptive LED headlights with BMW laser light are optionally available.

Other unmistakable design elements of the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive include powerfully flared wheel arches, M gills harmoniously integrated into the front side walls and side skirts protruding far outwards, which together with the attachments on the front and rear aprons form a continuous, black band . The rear diffuser, also in black, surrounds the typical M tailpipe pairs of the exhaust system. An M carbon exterior package is optionally available. The retrofit options in the BMW M Performance Parts range offer further customization options.

Six-cylinder in-line engine with high-speed characteristics

The 3,0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine of the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive combines the high-speed characteristics typical of BMW M GmbH engines with the latest version of M TwinPower Turbo technology. It is characterized by its sustained linear power development up to high load ranges. The engine delivers its maximum torque of 2 Nm between 750 and 5 rpm. The engine reaches its peak performance at a speed of 500 min-1 and maintains this up to the maximum speed of 650 min-5. The engine transfers its drive torque to an 510-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Its performance characteristics and the traction optimized with the help of the M xDrive system enable impressive acceleration values. The new BMW M1 Competition Convertible with M xDrive completes the sprint from standstill to 7 km / h in 200 seconds; it takes 1 seconds to accelerate from zero to 8 km / h. The intermediate sprint from 100 to 4 km / h takes 3,7 seconds (13,1th gear) or 200 seconds (80th gear). With the optional M Driver's Package, the electronic limit for the top speed can be increased from 120 to 2,8 km / h.

In addition to the cooling system, the oil supply is also designed for extremely dynamic driving situations on the racetrack. The M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps generates an emotionally charged drive sound that makes a significant contribution to an overall performance experience, especially when driving open-top.

M xDrive: precise power distribution, superior performance.

The M xDrive all-wheel drive system used in the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive distributes the drive torque continuously and fully variably between the front and rear wheels with the help of an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case. With its rear-wheel-focused design, it supports the typical M feeling, while traction and agility are optimized in a targeted manner. The optimized oil supply of the multi-plate clutch enables sustained all-wheel drive performance even with accelerated race track operation. The M xDrive is combined with an active M differential in the rear axle differential. In addition to the 4WD basic setting, the driver can use the setup menu to select the 4WD Sport mode, in which a higher proportion of the drive torque is directed to the rear wheels. When DSC is deactivated, the 2WD mode is available. The exclusive transmission of the drive torque to the rear wheels and the waiver of stabilizing interventions by the control systems help experienced drivers to have a particularly active driving experience.

Model-specific body reinforcement and chassis technology.

The driving characteristics of the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive are characterized by maximum steering precision, neutral self-steering behavior right up to the limit and a linear build-up of lateral forces throughout the entire lateral acceleration range. The ideal conditions for handling that can be precisely controlled even in extremely dynamic situations are created with the high torsional rigidity of the body structure and the chassis connection. This is ensured, among other things, by driving dynamics struts and an aluminum push panel in the front end, underfloor struts and a rear axle carrier that is rigidly connected to the body. The torsion strut package in the rear area of the body is added as a convertible-specific specialty.

A model-specific version of the double-articulated strut front axle also takes into account the requirements associated with all-wheel drive. It has an adapted axle geometry and an independent steering ratio. The five-link rear axle of the new BMW M4 Competition Cabrio with M xDrive has kinematics and elastokinematics that have been refined in detail. The standard equipment also includes forged M light alloy wheels in sizes 19 inches on the front and 20 inches on the rear axle.

The M Servotronic steering promotes exact course determination when cornering dynamically as well as comfort when parking and maneuvering. To do this, it combines the functions of speed-dependent power steering assistance and a variable steering ratio. The new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive also comes as standard with an Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers.

Two characteristics for the brake pedal feel, ten levels for traction control.

The integrated braking system of the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive triggers the required brake pressure particularly quickly and precisely with the help of an electric actuator. It is used both in conjunction with the standard M Compound brake system and with the optional M carbon ceramic brake system. The M-specific version of the integrated brake system also enables two characteristic curves to be displayed for the pedal feel.

The range of functions of the DSC driving stability control includes M Dynamic Mode, which allows additional wheel slip at the push of a button to support a particularly sporty driving experience. The new M Traction Control function is also available in conjunction with the M Drive Professional option. This new type of traction control enables the driver to individually set the intervention thresholds for wheel slip limitation in ten levels.

M carbon bucket seats and M specific operating system.

A modern premium ambience is combined in the interior of the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive with typical M racing flair. The M leather steering wheel with shift paddles, the M-specific gear selector switch and red accents direct the focus entirely on the intense driving experience. Electrically adjustable and heated M sport seats and the Merino leather upholstery with extended features are part of the standard equipment, which can be supplemented with neck warmers and, for the first time, seat ventilation. As a highlight in the range of optional equipment, the new, fully electrically adjustable and heated M carbon bucket seats impress with a structure-based design that combines racing functionality with lightweight construction as well as long-distance comfort and luxurious workmanship.

The M-specific operating system includes the setup button on the center console of the BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive. It enables direct access to the setting options for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive. Two complete vehicle setups can be saved and called up with the M buttons on the steering wheel. The M Drive Professional option, designed for use on the racetrack, offers not only the M Traction Control function, but also the M Drift Analyzer and the M Laptimer, which can be used to document particularly sporty driving maneuvers. The control panel on the center console includes the M mode button as standard. It can be used to influence the activities of the driver assistance systems as well as the displays in the instrument cluster and in the head-up display in order to create a driving experience that is appropriate to the situation and is typical of M. The ROAD and SPORT settings are available, and the TRACK mode can also be activated in conjunction with the M Drive Professional.

A reduction in vehicle weight of around 25 kilograms compared to the standard equipment can be achieved with the optional M Race Track Package. It includes the M carbon-ceramic brake system, weight-optimized M light alloy wheels, which can be fitted with semi-slick tires on request, and the M carbon bucket seats.

Exclusive and individual: high-quality special equipment.

The standard equipment with 3-zone automatic air conditioning, LED interior lighting including ambient light and a HiFi loudspeaker system increases comfort in everyday life and when traveling. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional with a fully digital display network, the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are also part of the standard equipment of the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive.
