Shortly before the first motorsport highlight of the year, the 24 Hours of Daytona (USA) next weekend, BMW M GmbH presented the BMW M5 CS. With 635 hp it is the most powerful vehicle in the history of BMW M. At the weekend, the BMW M5 CS will lead the field of the “BMW Endurance Challenge at Daytona” as the safety car, in which the BMW M4 GT4 will compete. BMW Team RLL driver Connor De Phillippi (USA) tested the BMW M5 CS in advance. De Phillippi is very familiar with M Power. In 2019, the BMW works driver behind the wheel of the BMW M8 GTE won the 24-hour race in Daytona. Next weekend, he and BMW Team RLL are aiming for the third victory in a row for the BMW M8 GTE in the GTLM class. But before it gets down to business in the racing car, De Phillippi was given a very special treat. He was allowed to test one of the first BMW M5 CS produced for the USA and see for himself what it feels like to drive the most powerful M vehicle of all time with 635 hp.

"You really outdid yourself with this vehicle - many thanks to everyone who worked on it at BMW M“Says De Phillippi. "My first trip was extremely impressive. That the BMW M5 CS is so agile in tight corners and generally feels so extremely manoeuvrable is unbelievable given its size.“The BMW M5 CS owes this agility to a consistent lightweight construction concept. It enables a weight saving of around 70 kilograms compared to the BMW M5 Competition. The exclusive special model of the BMW M0 completes the standard sprint from 100 to 5 km / h in just 3,0 seconds, and after 10,3 seconds it has already reached 200 km / h. The maximum speed is 305 km / h (limited). "From my point of view, every detail on this vehicle is built at the highest motorsport level," says De Phillippi.

The vehicle cuts a correspondingly good figure on the racetrack. There it will be used in Daytona in its function as a safety car for the Michelin Pilot Challenge race, the “BMW Endurance Challenge at Daytona”. Markus Flasch, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH, will also give the famous command “Ladies and Gentlemen, Start your Engines” as the virtual Grand Marshal of the race. One of the vehicles fighting for victories and podium places in the Michelin Pilot Challenge is the BMW M4 GT4.

The BMW M5 CS claims not only to be perfectly suited for the racetrack, but also to be suitable for everyday use. De Phillippi's judgment: Mission accomplished. "This vehicle is the ultimate combination of everyday usability and sports car", he says. "The space and the comfort allow you to fit whatever you want in it. I love the BMW M5, for example, for the fact that I can stow my bike and luggage in it without having to forego sportiness. Because in no time at all, the vehicle is ready for the racetrack at any time."

A total of four people can enjoy the unique driving experience of the BMW M5 CS on two M carbon seats at the front and two individual seats at the rear. On the M Alcantara steering wheel, the 12 o'clock center marking in a red, translucent perforation cites classic racing cars, while the shift paddles are made of carbon. "The steering wheel feels very good, and the paddle shifters as well as the carbon seats made the driving experience on the racetrack a real pleasure“, De Phillippi sums up. Back in the racing cockpit, De Phillippi and his fellow BMW drivers will fight for victory in the BMW M24 GTE at the 8-hour race in Daytona next weekend. It starts on Saturday at 15.40:21.40 p.m. local time (XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. CET).
