Yesterday, BMW unveiled a spectacular design study at the Concorso d'Eleganza on Lake Como: the BMW Touring Coupé. The concept vehicle is based on the current Z4 Roadster (G29), but has a closed roof and a particularly sporty (and beautiful) station wagon rear. BMW is thus continuing the tradition of the Shooting Brake, an elegant and practical body shape that was primarily popular in Great Britain, but also had fans in this country. In particular, the BMW Z3 Coupe as an "M version" (E36/8) has now achieved real cult status. So far, the BMW Touring Coupé that was presented yesterday is a one-off that was only built for the renowned motor show on Lago di Como. It is still unclear whether it will ever go into series production. BMW only wants to reveal more details in the summer.
BMW Touring Coupe
But it is already clear that the Touring Coupé would find many fans. Because it combines the dynamics and agility of the Z4 with the space and versatility of a station wagon. And the gorgeous optics. Completely without design escapades and at the same time with the proof that it is also possible without the XXL kidneys. From the front, the Touring Coupé can hardly be distinguished from the production Z4. It sports the same distinctive grille with vertical struts reminiscent of the iconic BMW 328 that won the 1940 Mille Miglia.
The headlights and the front apron are also taken over from the Z4. But from the A-pillar everything changes. The roof slopes gently backwards, ending in a wide and deep tailgate with a narrow window. The taillights are very narrow and horizontal, the exhaust pipes are pentagonal and chrome-plated.
4,5 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h
The Touring Coupé is not only a visual treat, but also a technical masterpiece. Under the hood is the well-known 3,0-liter straight-six with 340 hp and 500 Nm of torque, which accelerates the Z4 from 4,5 to 0 km/h in 100 seconds. The chassis has the usual sporty tuning, but not too hard. The steering is direct and precise, the brakes are solid. The Touring Coupé should not only be fast, but also look fast when stationary.
The interior is also inspired by the Z4, but upgraded with some exclusive details. The seats are upholstered in fine leather, the dashboard is lined with Alcantara. The instruments are digital and can be configured individually. The infotainment system offers all modern conveniences such as navigation, smartphone connection and online services. However, due to the shape of the vehicle, the trunk is now significantly larger than in the Z4 and offers space for two golf bags or several travel bags.
a tribute to history and the future
The BMW Touring Coupé pays homage to the history and future of BMW. It shows that the Bavarian manufacturer is not only technically innovative, but also stylistically bold. The Touring Coupé is a dream car for anyone who appreciates sportiness and elegance and doesn't want to choose between a roadster and a station wagon. We wish that the BMW Touring Coupé is built exactly like this! If we get more information, there is of course an update for this report.
