Its external appearance signals a new level of sportiness, immediately recognizable by the exterior features of the M sports package, which are now also standard on the four-cylinder models. As part of the expansion of the series scope and a significantly streamlined product range, the equipment model Advantage, model Sport Line and model M Sport are no longer offered. With its brand-typical sportiness, the BMW Z4 builds on the historical roots of the brand. The tradition of the roadster as the epitome of driving pleasure and success on the racetrack goes back to the company's early years as an automobile manufacturer. The brand's open two-seaters have also marked important milestones in BMW's development in the recent past.

The BMW Z1987 presented in 1 was developed as an innovation leader by BMW Technik GmbH and fascinated with its front mid-engine, retractable doors, steel monocoque and plastic paneling. Around 1988 examples were delivered between 1991 and 8, and each one is now a coveted collector's item. The BMW Z000 was presented in 3 and was the brand's first model to be produced exclusively at the US BMW Group plant in Spartanburg. The BMW Z1995 made its debut on the big screen – as agent James Bond's company car in the film “GoldenEye”.

The Hollywood premiere in a James Bond blockbuster four years later also helped the BMW Z8 to attract worldwide attention. In the film "The World Is Not Enough" in 1999, the roadster attracted attention with its classic lines reminiscent of the legendary BMW 507. Under the long bonnet of the handcrafted BMW Z8, a 5,0-litre, 294 kW/400 hp V5 engine originally developed for the BMW M8 ensured a fascinating performance, and not just on screen.

For 20 years now, the model designation BMW Z4 has stood for open-top driving pleasure in a two-seater. The first generation of the roadster was unveiled at the 2002 Paris Motor Show. Four years later the two-seater BMW Z4 Coupé followed, on the basis of which a GT3 racing car was developed, which competed with great success in the Nürburgring Endurance Series. The BMW Z4 also set standards for dynamics on the road. The Roadster and Coupé were also offered as high-performance sports cars from BMW M GmbH with a 250 kW/340 hp in-line six-cylinder engine.

A retractable hardtop was the highlight of the second generation BMW Z4. It replaced both the roadster and the coupé of the previous model. Flowing lines, a long bonnet and a passenger cell that is set far back characterized the appearance of the two-seater, which received the Eyes On Design Award, the International Design Excellence Award and the red dot Design Award immediately after its premiere in 2009. On the race track, the BMW Z4 continued the success story of its predecessor with a variant built according to the GT3 regulations. Customer sport teams won the 24-hour races in Dubai and Spa-Francorchamps with it.

The third generation: in-line six-cylinder engine as a unique selling point.

The current BMW Z4 has been on the market since 2020 and is produced by the BMW Group's production partner, Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik, in Graz, Austria. The global market launch of the new edition will begin in November 2022. The drive portfolio includes two four-cylinder engines and one straight-six engine, which is based on the BMW Z4 M40i (combined fuel consumption: 8,1 – 7,9 liters/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 184 - 179 g/km according to WLTP; Information according to NEDC: - ) gives it an absolutely unique selling point in its competitive environment. The BMW M automobile recently accounted for more than 30 percent of the global sales volume for the roadster, in Germany the BMW Z4 M40i even had a share of 48 percent.

In total, more than 55 third-generation BMW Z000s have already been sold worldwide. The most important single market for the Roadster is Germany, where around 4 percent of all vehicles of the current model generation have been sold, followed by the USA with 26 percent, China, the United Kingdom and Japan. In a vehicle segment that is declining overall, the BMW Z17 has had an extraordinarily constant sales volume since it went on sale. Right from the start, it was by far the best-selling model in its highly competitive vehicle class, which is exclusively occupied by German premium brands, and since then it has steadily increased its market share.

The character, which is consistently oriented towards pure driving pleasure with an athletic design, spirited drive and inspiring agility, contributes significantly to the high popularity of the BMW Z4. These qualities are also what regularly help it to win comparison tests in the trade press. Immediately after its presentation, the BMW Z4 met with a positive response from the media. The magazine "auto, motor und sport" announced it as "the sports car comeback of the year", in the "Auto Bild" it was described as "the hottest convertible of the year". The BMW Z4 also performed excellently in public surveys. The readers of the magazine "Motor Klassik" voted it a "classic of the future" in 2019. And in the readers' choice of the magazine "sport auto", the roadster came out on top several times. In the meantime, each of the three model variants has won a “sport auto award”.

More dynamic than ever: M sports package as standard, BMW kidney grille in a new design.

With powerful proportions, puristic aesthetics in the current BMW design language and numerous individual details, the exterior design of the BMW Z4 embodies the modern interpretation of the classic open sports car. The unmistakable features at the front of the vehicle include the large air intakes, the LED headlights with vertically arranged light sources positioned far to the outside and the long bonnet that spans the wheel arches. The current design modifications ensure that the width of the roadster and its powerful stature are now even more intensely emphasized.

This is mainly due to the exterior features of the M Sport package, which are now also part of the standard equipment for the four-cylinder models. It includes the three-part air intakes in the front apron that are typical of M, a unique side skirt contour and a rear apron with particularly striking side surrounds. In addition, the side air inlets, which direct the airstream to the air curtains and thus reduce turbulence in the area of the wheel arches, have been redesigned. At the same time, the BMW kidney grille received a detailed, refined and particularly expressive design. Inside, it now has a horizontal structure that reinforces the impression of the wide front end. The specific performance character of the BMW Z4 M40i is underlined, among other things, by exterior mirror caps in Cerium Gray and trapezoidal tailpipe trims for the exhaust system.

The clear surfaces of the side view, structured by two dynamically flowing character lines, the large air breathers behind the front wheel arches, the spoiler integrated in the luggage compartment lid, the narrow, L-shaped rear lights and the striking diffuser element also contribute to the puristic, sporty appearance of the BMW Z4 the rear apron. The classic textile top of the roadster is electrically operated and can be opened and closed in 50 seconds at the push of a button, even while driving at speeds of up to 10 km/h.

Exclusive 19-inch M light-alloy wheels, three new exterior colors.

A new part of the standard equipment are the 18-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design. The two-tone wheels are combined with mixed tires measuring 225/45 R18 on the front axle and 255/40 R18 on the rear axle. M light-alloy wheels in 4-inch format designed exclusively for the BMW Z19 are now optionally available. The V-spoke design, the color jet black matt and a high-sheen rim edge give the roadster a particularly striking and high-quality appearance when viewed from the side. The 19-inch M light-alloy wheels are fitted with tires measuring 255/35 ZR19 on the front axle and 275/35 ZR19 on the rear axle.

The dark inserts in the headlights give the front of the vehicle a subtle, sporty look. These represent a harmonious combination with the M high-gloss Shadow Line with extended scopes.

Classic sports car cockpit with M-specific accents.

The interior design of the BMW Z4 is characterized by a driver-oriented cockpit design, sports seats with integrated headrests, clear, forward-looking lines and the use of decorative surfaces concentrated in a few areas. The BMW Z4 sDrive20i (combined fuel consumption: 7,4 – 6,9 litres/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 166 – 157 g/km according to WLTP; figures according to NEDC: – ) have Vernasca leather upholstery as standard, which is available in the Black, ivory white, cognac and magma red colors to choose from. The exceptional position of the BMW Z4 in the field of drive technology is embodied in particular by the top model, whose six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which is unique in the competitive environment, ensures outstanding performance characteristics. The 3,0-litre, 250 kW/340 hp engine develops a maximum torque of 500 Nm and accelerates the BMW Z4 M40i from zero to 4,5 km/h in 100 seconds. The two four-cylinder engines, each with a capacity of 2,0 liters and BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, are characterized by spirited performance characteristics.
