Low-lying front, special aerodynamic support on the sides and a long rear. At first glance, it becomes clear that the new Bugatti Chiron Super Sport1 is uncompromisingly geared towards optimized aerodynamics. The engineers developed the new hyper sports car from Molsheim, France, at top speed without sacrificing luxury and comfort. "With the Chiron Super Sport we are following our long tradition and combining extreme high speed with absolute luxury," says Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti. “The Chiron Super Sport stands for more comfort and elegance with even more power and higher speed. With the new creation, we are creating another independent personality within the Chiron2 family. It represents the essence of what we have learned and developed in recent years, the ultimate Gran Turismo. ”At the same time, the Chiron Super Sport marks part of the great Bugatti Spectrum of Performance - as a counterpart to the cornering artist Chiron Pur Sport3, who is designed for lateral agility.

Design - Made for speed

Bugatti is developing a new vehicle design with optimized aerodynamics for the streamlined body of the Chiron Super Sport. The new Chiron Super Sport is an uncompromising reincarnation of the Bugatti design mantra "Form Follows Performance". Every centimeter of the outer skin from the front splitter to the rear diffuser is designed for high speed.

Because at over 420 km / h a vehicle has to offer a lot of downforce and at the same time the lowest possible aerodynamic drag. “Our goal was to set the vehicle up to be neutral for maximum speed and at the same time to make it as aerodynamically efficient as possible,” explains Frank Heyl, Deputy Design Director at Bugatti. The lift forces that act on the body at 440 km / h are immense. In order to counteract this buoyancy and to precisely balance the forces, the outer skin of the Chiron Super Sport generates massive downforce. “Aero efficiency was therefore particularly important in the design,” Heyl continues. With the extended rear, the so-called longtail, the Chiron Super Sport has a completely unique aesthetic thanks to the new proportions. Optionally, a new horizontal color split extends the proportions of the Chiron Super Sport optically even further, making the car appear even flatter.

Aerodynamically, the rear, which has grown by around 25 centimeters, keeps the laminar flow on the body for as long as possible. To do this, the designers enlarged the cross-section of the diffuser. As a result, the spoiler edge of the diffuser moves upwards, so that the spoiler area at the rear is minimized by 44 percent. This significantly reduces the suction created there and thus the wind resistance - because it brakes the vehicle. A welcome side effect of these technical adjustments: the rear has even better proportions and now appears both wider and closer to the ground.

The Chiron Super Sport can be recognized without a doubt by its repositioned tailpipe configuration. In order to increase the effect of the diffuser and to give it more space, Bugatti has moved the exhaust system, which is otherwise in the middle, to the side, one on top of the other. In addition, the exhaust system sounds deeper and richer. "All the downforce that we can generate with the diffuser does not have to be created with the aerodynamically less favorable wings - so we can retract the wing as far as possible in top speed mode and drive with the least possible resistance," explains Frank Heyl.

For an almost ideal air flow on the body, the front must therefore also be perfectly drawn. With the Chiron Super Sport, among other things, air curtains next to the air inlets ensure better air flow from the front towards the wheel arches so that they are as close and long as possible to the side of the vehicle. “This minimizes air resistance and improves the air flow to the side radiators,” explains Frank Heyl. The new, concentrated facial expression with its turned on headlights and the modern design language perfectly matches the character of the Chiron Super Sport.

The nine exhaust holes on each fender are not only a quote from the Bugatti EB 110 Super Sport, they also serve to let the air pressure out of the front wheel arches and thus generate aerodynamic downforce on the front axle. Additional outlets on the front wheel arches help to further balance the aerodynamic loads.

Only aluminum wheels in a five-Y-spoke design available for the Chiron Super Sport ensure even more exclusivity. These new Super Sport rims are also available in the optional Diamond Cut. The magnesium wheels known from the Chiron Pur Sport are optionally available, which further reduce the weight of the unsprung masses.

The interior is a combination of timeless elegance and incomparable comfort. It's a mix of natural elements like leather and polished aluminum with high-tech carbon fiber applications. An interior that is perfect for continental high-speed travel.

Technical maxims are in the foreground during the development, because the demands on the new hyper sports car are very high: it should be easy and safe to control even at top speeds of up to 440 km / h.

More power and higher speeds

Bugatti has fundamentally redesigned the 8,0-liter W16 engine for the Chiron Super Sport, with output increasing by 100 hp to 1.176 kW / 1.600 hp. At the same time, the weight of the vehicle is reduced by 23 kilograms. The engineers adapt the turbocharger, oil pump and cylinder head with valve train as well as the gearbox and clutch. "For even greater longitudinal acceleration and an even more emotional driving experience, we have increased the speed," says Michael Kodra, Head of Drive Development at Bugatti. For noticeably more agility, the drive now turns 300 revolutions higher up to 7.100 revolutions per minute. 1.600 Newton meters of torque are now available from 2.000 to 7.000 revolutions instead of up to 6.000 revolutions.

Due to the increased performance, caused among other things by larger turbochargers with more efficient compressor wheels, the seven-speed dual clutch transmission only shifts from sixth to seventh gear under full load and full acceleration at 403 km / h. The Chiron Super Sport accelerates from 0 to 200 km / h in 5,8 seconds and to 300 km / h in 12,1 seconds. The Chiron Super Sport accelerates from 0 to 400 km / h seven percent faster than a Chiron. The seventh gear is translated 3,6 percent longer.

In order for the acceleration to follow directly under full load, the boost pressure must only drop minimally. When changing gears, the pressure decreases very briefly within just 0,3 seconds, only to then reach the full boost pressure of 2,8 bar again and fill the W16 engine of the Chiron Super Sport. So that occupants do not feel this interruption in tractive power when shifting gears, the boost pressure control in the gears is set even more precisely. The result: "Despite the immense power and enormous longitudinal acceleration, the Chiron Super Sport drives comfortably, quietly and evenly," explains Michael Kodra. The acceleration does not stop even from 6.000 revolutions and gives the Chiron Super Sport a huge boost up to 7.100 revolutions. "These new engine characteristics are a perfect match for the fastest Chiron," says Michael Kodra.

Newly tuned chassis for top speed

Bugatti is redeveloping the chassis especially for high speed and the new aerodynamics. Steering systems and dampers convey a solid and tighter connection to the vehicle from the driving experience, thereby enabling tighter steering for smoother steering movements. Harder springs stabilize the entire vehicle at top speed, and the engineers re-tune the electronically controlled chassis. As if in real time, it regulates the settings within six milliseconds and adapts to the driving behavior. The driving modes EB, Handling, Autobahn and Topspeed are also available.

In conjunction with the longer rear and the modified front, the Chiron Super Sport achieves a balanced aerobalance at high speed. “Even in long, drawn-out curves that are driven very quickly, the rear of the vehicle remains calm and neutral, making the Chiron Super Sport very relaxed to drive. Our focus is on absolute driving stability with maximum comfort at top speed, ”explains Jachin Schwalbe, Head of Chassis Development at Bugatti. This imperturbable directional stability, coupled with the calmness and rigidity of the steering as well as the noticeable extra power make the Chiron Super Sport unique.

Newly developed Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires from Michelin, optimized for top speed, offer more rigidity and smoothness than grip-optimized tires such as the Chiron Pur Sport. In addition, they are the only tires that can continuously drive up to 500 km / h. This is made possible by reinforced belt layers that can cope with enormous forces - tested on a test stand that was originally built for the Space Shuttle. After production, each tire is individually x-rayed to rule out even the smallest irregularities.

"When developing the chassis, we turned every possible adjustment screw in order to obtain the best set-up for enormous acceleration power and at the same time the unique luxury and comfort experience from Bugatti," explains Jachin Schwalbe. One and a half years and several test kilometers on proving grounds and high-speed railways later, the developer is satisfied. “Compared to the lateral dynamics and easy-turning Chiron Pur Sport, which offers a lot of downforce up to 350 km / h, the Chiron Super Sport remains very neutral and calm even above it in the upper speed ranges. That increases the feeling of security immensely, ”he explains. Result: a very precise and for the driver predictable driving behavior with a sovereign steering and calm body.

Three ancestors of super sports

The new Chiron Super Sport joins a famous ancestral line of Bugatti. In 1931, Bugatti presented the Type 55 Super Sport for the first time at the Paris Motor Show. The Gran Turismo combines thoroughbred racing car technology with the comfort of a noble two-seater. The 2,3-liter eight-cylinder developed up to 160 hp with the help of a compressor and accelerated the Type 55 Super Sport to over 180 km / h. Some of the bodies were designed by the young and talented Jean Bugatti; only 38 vehicles were built by 1935.

Bugatti did not build the next Super Sport variant until between 1993 and 1995. 110 vehicles of the EB 39 Super Sport were built. The EB 110 relies again on lightweight construction, performance, luxury and exclusivity and becomes the best super sports car of its time. It will be the first super sports car with a carbon fiber body, all-wheel drive and four turbochargers. The V12 turbo develops over 610 hp and sets several records with the EB 110 Super Sport, including the one for a top speed of 351 km / h.

Two decades later, Bugatti is reviving super sport. The 1.200 hp Veyron 16.4. Super Sport broke the speed record in 2010 with 431,2 km / h and thus secured an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for a long time as the fastest street-legal production sports car in the world. It is the only Veyron model that does not have the typical large air intakes, but rather has NACA ducts, and in which the engine is largely covered. Bugatti developed the horizontal color split especially for the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport.

History repeats itself in the summer of 2019. With the Chiron Super Sport 300 + 4, Bugatti breaks the limit of 300 miles per hour: the world record vehicle reaches an incredible speed of 304,773 mph (490,484 km / h). This results in a small series limited to just 30 units in a similar design and color elements. Bugatti will soon start manufacturing the Chiron Super Sport in Molsheim. The delivery of the 3,2 million euros (net) expensive new hyper sports car is planned for the beginning of 2022.
