Chevrolet Onix Hatchback - stylish polo competitor for South America

Chevrolet Onix Hatchback - a stylish polo competitor for South America. It was some time ago that the US brand Chevrolet, under pressure from the GM group, took the step to withdraw from the European market as far as possible. At the moment only remaining stocks of the Camaro, and in the future probably the new mid-engine Corvette called C8 will be offered in Europe. The situation is very different in South America, where the Chevrolet brand enjoys a very high reputation and is the market leader in some markets on the continent. Small, inexpensive Chevy models are also offered there, some of which are based on GM models that are manufactured in China. For example, the new Chevrolet Onix Hatchback is the hatchback brother of the Chevrolet Onix Plus, which rolls off the assembly line in China as the Chevrolet Onix.

Design knows how to convince in part

In terms of design, the 4,16m long, 1,73m wide and 1,47m high Chevrolet plays in a league with competitors such as the VW Polo, the Ford Fiesta or the Renault Clio. The sporty, yet discreet and clear design is immediately convincing, and especially the front, with the large radiator grille, the narrow headlights and the elegant Chevrolet logo, which was traditionally held in gold, looks very high quality and noble. The silhouette also looks very sporty, and thanks to the generous 2,55m wheelbase, the overhangs are kept short and crisp, creating modern, dynamic proportions. At the rear, the designers unfortunately ran out of creativity, because the design of the rear section looks very simple and simple, with rear lights in VW Polo style and a very banal design of the trunk and the rear bumper. Only the always very classy and elegant Bowtie logo from Chevrolet makes the Onix Hatchback stand out.

Technically on the ball.

The new Chevy, which aims fully at the VW Polo, is powered by a 1-liter turbo gasoline engine with three cylinders, which delivers 116 hp and 168 Nm of maximum torque. The featherweight, which only weighs 1075 kg, accelerates from 9,6 to 0 km / h in 100 seconds, and propulsion only ends at 187 km / h. The power transmission takes place either via a manual six-speed gearbox or via an automatic with six speed steps. As already mentioned above, the Chevrolet Onix offers very good performance for a low-budget car, which was mainly developed for emerging countries, but is also a veritable competitor for European small cars.

Equipment is brilliant for this class.

In terms of comfort and safety features, the new Chevy Onix Hatchback can compete with the leaders in its class, as it not only offers comfort features such as automatic climate control as standard, but is also fully networked, which means that the MyChevrolet app always has all telemetry data in view , and can go online in the car with Wi-Fi access. The new Chevrolet also offers a standard navigation system, a parking assistant and a blind spot warning system. Of course there are also 6 airbags, ESP and a tire pressure monitor on board.

And finally ... Too bad that Chevrolet had to pull out of Europe under pressure from the GM group, because the top management thought that one should not compete with Opel. Opel is now at PSA and GM hardly plays a role in Europe. With cars like the Onix Hatchback you could certainly try to get back into Europe and grab a piece of the pie in the small car segment.
