The new hyper sports car from France is being tested on the high-speed lane at speeds of up to 440 km / h. Experienced development engineers sit in the cockpit to give the Chiron Super Sport the finishing touches. Setting drives to achieve the unique combination of top speed, luxury and comfort even at top speeds beyond 400 km / h.
Bugatti Chiron Super Sport
In the high-speed test over several days, the engineers finalize the coordination of mechanics, damping and aerodynamics before the first models of the new Chiron Super Sport are delivered in Molsheim from the end of August 2021. "After successful road tests up to 380 km / h, we are now refining the driving behavior up to 440 km / h so that the Chiron Super Sport drives very safely even at this unbelievable top speed and gives the pilot a good and above all safe feeling at extremely high speeds" , explains Jachin Schwalbe, Head of Chassis Development at Bugatti.
Many technical changes and optimizations are responsible for this. Various parameters can be varied and compared with one another using variable setting values for the rear wing angle, vehicle height, damping and electrically assisted steering. Round by round. Around 100 additional sensors measure temperature and pressure
Michael Bode from the Bugatti Total Vehicle Testing team takes care of the measurement technology during the test drives so that objective data can also be evaluated in addition to subjective impressions. Around 100 additional sensors record various data such as temperature and pressure while driving. “With the enormous power and the high speeds, not only the lift at different pressures changes, but also the thermals. That is why we check all components at top speed under full load and optimize them if necessary. We owe the great effort to our customers for this extraordinary and exclusive vehicle, ”explains Michael Bode.
Because compared to the Chiron2, the Chiron Super Sport differs, among other things, from an elongated and aerodynamically optimized body, which is designed for extreme high-speed drives above 420 km / h. The extended rear allows the laminar flow to rest against the car longer and offers a significantly reduced demolition area. This reduces air resistance and improves aerodynamics. Difficult work at a top speed of over 400 km / h.
The idea for the longtail came up in the summer of 2019, when the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300 + 3 was the first production car to break the 300 mph limit and has since held the speed record for production vehicles: it is now exactly 304,773 mph (490,484 km / h) the fastest production sports car ever. The 30 units of the production version of the Super Sport 300+ were sold out immediately.
More power and a longer seventh gear
In addition to the newly designed aerodynamics, Bugatti is also changing the drive. Marco Schulte, among others, takes care of the fact that the Chiron Super Sport continues to accelerate strongly even at over 400 km / h. As a motor applicator in the Bugatti development department, it adapts the work of the four turbochargers precisely to the load. In the Chiron Super Sport, the 8,0-liter W16 engine has an output of 1.176 kW / 1.600 hp. That is exactly 100 hp more than in the Chiron. Due to the increased performance, caused among other things by larger turbochargers with more efficient compressor wheels, the seven-speed dual clutch transmission only shifts from sixth to seventh gear under full load and full acceleration at 403 km / h. In addition, the seventh gear was translated 3,6 percent longer.
“It is crucial for the driver that the interruption in tractive power is not noticeable when shifting gear at 7.100 rpm. That's why we fine-tune the boost pressure control in the last three gears, ”explains Marco Schulte. When shifting gears, the boost pressure drops only minimally in order to immediately provide the full boost pressure of 2,8 bar again. The Chiron Super Sport accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2,4 seconds, to 200 km / h in 5,8 seconds - and thus 0,3 seconds faster than a Chiron. The difference from 0 to 300 km / h is even clearer: in 12,1 seconds instead of 13,1 seconds. The Chiron Super Sport accelerates from 0 to 400 km / h in 28,6 seconds - four seconds faster than the Chiron. The Chiron Super Sport drives over 420 km / h in a new league - the Chiron regulates gently at 420 km / h.
