In many markets, more and more people are deciding to buy an electric car. In Germany alone, according to various media reports, purely electric vehicles will overtake diesel drive in new passenger car registrations in 2021. The suspension manufacturer KW automotive, which specializes in the aftermarket, is also benefiting from this ongoing boom in electric cars. More and more drivers of electric cars such as the Tesla Model 3 are enjoying automotive accessories. Therefore, KW automotive is also increasingly developing coilovers for electric vehicles. The manually adjustable KW V3 coilover kit and the adaptive KW DDC plug-and-play coilover kit are now available for the new Cupra Born (K1). As part of the parts certificate, the electric car can be lowered by 20 to 45 millimeters with the height-adjustable coilovers. While the damping of the KW V3 can be adjusted manually, the DDC plug-and-play with its electronic damper control is recommended for all Cupra Born that have the optional DCC series suspension control. The two KW coilovers made of stainless steel in Germany are available from 1.999 euros.

KW automotive has introduced its adaptive KW DDC plug-and-play coilovers for over 150 vehicle models. These suspensions, which are electronically adjustable in terms of damping, are now also available for the new Cupra Born with a part certificate. The coilover kit, which is compatible with the optional DCC damper control, constantly adjusts the damping to the road and driving style. To do this, the signals from the body and wheel travel sensors are read and the control unit of the Cupra Born (K1) regulates the KW DDC plug-and-play coilover suspension per wheel accordingly. Acceleration, braking and steering are also taken into account. "Since our KW DDC suspensions are compatible with the DCC damper control used by the VAG Group, the various driving modes that influence the damping can continue to be used," says KW Brand Manager Florian Johann. Depending on the situation, the electromagnetic damper valves change their identification and switch to firmer damping, for example. "Because the less unrest there is in the body structure, the less the ESP has to regulate," explains Florian Johann.

Manually adjustable: the KW V3 coilover suspension

The best-selling retrofit kit from KW automotive is the KW V3 or KW Variant 3 coilover kit. The dampers differ from conventional chassis dampers in that KW uses what is known as multi-valve technology. This allows the suspension to be individually adjusted manually in terms of damping. “The more harmoniously an electric car is damped, the range can also benefit. With the Tesla Model 3, for example, electromobility specialists achieved an increase in range of seven percent by installing our coilover suspension.” While the KW V3 is available from 1.999 euros, the electronically adjustable KW DDC plug-and-play coilover suspension for the Cupra Born costs 2.594 Euro. In addition to individual damper adjustment, both coilover kits also allow stepless lowering. The parts certificate covers a lowering range of 20 to 45 millimeters on the front axle and the drive axle.
